She's got everything i want .. botox & lips (very subtle, looks great), nails always professionally done, posh designer gym wear, very regular trips to hair/beauty/spa salons.l, designer brands for other things she mentioned. I feel like a total sack of shit next to her.

She is also very lovely in general.

I bet she has some insecurities that are masked by all of those things.

Personally I take great care in making sure I do not pass on the message that your outward appearance matters. I am clean, healthy, wear appropriate clothes for the situation. I therefore have a LOT more time and disposable income for other things that bring me far more joy and add a lot more to
my family.

I feel sorry for women who feel that they need all that just to live in this world.

I was hoping you were going to give me some inspiring anecdote about how strong she was or how committed or how much she helps other people or some adversity she has overcome.

Far far more impressive than the fact she spends considerable time and money making her face look different.

Out of interest how do you know that the lady at the gym is not the kindest, warmest person ever? Maybe she just loves beautiful things and can afford them?

Sounds like someone who takes herself far too seriously. I can afford to do all the treatment but I am just not that into myself. Would rather spend grooming time having fun with people I love. Each one to their own though and if that’s what you aspire too then no reason why you can’t aim for that.

I’m in awe of the two men in their eighties who go to my gym. As far as I know, they haven’t had any work done.

I couldn't bring myself to aspire to any of those things.

I clicked on this as I thought it might be an aspirational post about someone’s fitness. But c’mon-assuming someone who likes to take care of their appearance doesn’t also read? Really? I care about my appearance: the last book I read was The Haunting of Hill House, Frankenstein before that. Currently reading The Origins of the Family. AND I wear lipstick and nice clothes! I think we’re better than this aren’t we?

This. Having botox and fake nails is fine if that's what you want, but it's hardly an achievement to be 'in awe' of.

Botox fair enough its obvious most of the time.. but lips???? Nahhhh If you can even tell its been done it de facto looks shit IMO.

Some people have charmed easy lives, others look like they have a "nice life" but are not happy.

The people i envy in this life arent the ones wearing matching alo gym sets...

She might well be in awe of you. I look like a sack of shit when I'm working out too and couldn't care less as it's a gym not a catwalk. And that's the kinda self-esteem one can't try to buy in a salon. Own the red-faced sweaty sack of shit look. It's about health not injections and perfection. We all go to shit in the end and someone's still gotta love us, including ourselves.

I’m in awe of my friend who is 60, works full time in a physical job and cycles thousands of miles a year. Women with Botox make me a little sad.

What’s that got to do with anything? You can take pride in your appearance and be an avid reader, not mutually exclusive traits.

Well this is a race to the bottom isn’t it! Woman looks after herself, is therefore shallow, takes herself too seriously, couldn’t possibly read books because they’re obviously for bare faced academic types. Have you all heard yourselves?

It doesn’t sound like the gym woman has low self esteem, I’m not sure how would deduce that? I wear make up, get my hair cut and coloured, sometimes paint my nails - my self esteem is pretty good I think as I love being me and my life. I can’t be arsed to go to the gym though, and I do have envy of people that go as I’m lazy and I think it’s good to have exercise (just don’t do it).

Just because people have interests in things you don’t like doesn’t mean they don’t like themselves.

Not everyone likes that look. I much prefer a natural beauty. Can’t stand the polished fake look.
