A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

Bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

There's some stuff tonight here (not on this thread) that reminded me of a comment I made in David Cameron's day

I feel like every politician needs to do a stint in a physical and/or retail/customer service etc job, with a real commute, and have experience of night time public transport going home.

Or maybe we should make that part of national service plan or something! It shouldn't take direct experience to be aware that workers - or indeed non-workers - are working hard in so many ways, but there's definitely a type of person who just doesn't see it. And they don't think about how food arrives on the table or all the other basic things that are required to keep society functioning.

Hopefully this place isn't reflective, but there's just so little respect for that kind of thing. I also heard that Tesco delivery drivers are going to be wearing body cams in future. The list of workers who are being exposed to unpleasantness while they simply do their jobs - it's getting longer and longer.

And that's before they run the risk of seeing a JRM calendar on a customer's wall! 🫣

Frankenchino · 13/11/2025 05:34

I see the Mail are leading with the headline ‘Oust Keir - Early General Election’ this morning.

But apparently I’m stupid to be extremely concerned about this and to dare mention the alternative looming on our horizon…

I agree with you. I think every politician should have lived in the real world with a real job. To hold an office of state you must have experience in that field. Proper experience. Not a customer service person at a bank, for example.

A Cabinet needs someone who has built a business too. Preferably someone at the top, although the electorate went a bit doolally over toolmaker v Rishi last time.

Starmer is seriously weakened by his own briefing out. He might cling on or go I’m not sure.

He’s just a like a dodgy ex at this point. If you dump me, no-one else will have you, your life is ruined, it will be a disaster, insert equivalent toxic and abusive gaslighting here.

Just 0.1% growth in Q3.

Oh dear, Rachel.

Delaying the budget for as long as possible looks like turning out to be another major blunder from Reeves and Starmer. The UK economy just looks worse and worse, and all because of Reeves’s terrible decisions and manifest incompetence.

upseedaisee · 13/11/2025 07:49

@EmeraldRoulette There were quite a few local buses driving to the House. The bus stops pretty much outside. I saw several numbers, but can't remember which ones. 218 rings bells. Google maps it, I'm sure it will give you some options. 👍

Rivalled · 13/11/2025 07:50

they dint seem to listen to expert advise ever - economists of all kinds saying for two months at least that uncertainty is damaging…it’s like a masterclass in what not to do when your economy is poised on the knife edge of slow growth-recession.

why do we let politicians govern these economics decisions at all…

Yep, they did it to gamble on some better macro data and more benign bond markets.

And yet everything they have done to date has been anti-growth. I hope that the outcry from the 26th proves to be the nail in the coffin for the ‘dynamic’ duo.

Perhaps the little nugget, Streeting, will make his move then.

Damnthetorpedoes · 13/11/2025 08:02

More bitterness from the exchequer.

Buyers of expensive manual and electric bicycles through salary sacrifice schemes will have their tax benefits sharply reduced under plans being drawn up by Rachel Reeves ahead of the Budget this month.

The chancellor is expected to introduce a new cap on how much people can spend on a bicycle through the Cycle to Work scheme, according to people familiar with Budget preparations. The original upper threshold of £1,000 was scrapped in 2019, allowing the purchase of even the most expensive bikes. But now ministers do not believe subsidies of several thousand pounds are the best use of taxpayer money. “

Cycle to Work should be about helping ordinary commuters switch to greener travel, not giving tax breaks to high earners buying £4,000 e-bikes for weekend rides in the Surrey Hills,” said one government figure. “Taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for luxury leisure.”

EasternStandard · 13/11/2025 08:05

R4 headlines just said Starmer has apologised to Streeting for briefing against him.

He may as well just go. Plus I thought he denied briefing in PMQs?

He should be asked directly in HoC were you aware of the briefings

I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop on this. The cynic in me says she's been waiting for something.

Rivalled · 13/11/2025 08:16

It was a gamble on the situation improving…hasn’t exactly worked out…she’s choked retail in peak season as everyone expecting a clobbering.

Oh yes, let’s cut the subsidy on MAMILs - and they say they’re not populist…that’s bound to raise a tonne of money…

Oh FFS 🙈
It really is a masterclass.

Have no fear, Reeves has cracked it💡🙄

Sky reporting this too.
So Starmer is admitting that the briefings came from No.10 and has been forced to apologise. What a shambles they are.

Am I the only reading the DM headline that they are now threatening the backbenchers with the nuclear option of a new GE?

No I’ve just been reading that.

the80sweregreat · 13/11/2025 08:28

I feel that a lot of people wouldn’t mind another general election tbh. It probably won’t happen , but after the budget there will be such a back lash , especially if it’s as bad as I keep on reading it may well be and nobody can seem to get the country moving.

First the markets will crash, now there will be an election if you kick us out.

@Legolava Nailed it, like a dodgy gaslighting ex partner.

It would be comical if they weren’t actually in power. What clowns they are. Damaging ones though unfortunately for us.
