A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

Bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

See also the late Frank Field.

And in fact the woman herself, Kemi Badenoch:

have a serious plan to do this."

Yeah I missed that bit too.

Apologies only just picked this up re Reform on lifting 2 child benefit cap

This from Farage speech 27th May

In a speech earlier today Mr Farage said:
... we believe lifting the two child cap is the right thing to do. Not because we support a benefits culture, but because we believe, for lower paid workers, this actually makes having children just a little bit easier for them. It's not a silver bullet. It doesn't solve all of those problems, but it helps them.
And some will tell you, well, Nigel this is not actually a popular policy in the country, but then I've never ever spent my time being a populist politician. I've nearly always spent my career pushing arguments that were minority opinions and trying to make them into majority opinions.

I think we've lost our sense of focus of just how important family is, and I want to emphasise: This is aimed at British families. It's not aimed at those that come into the country and suddenly decide to have a lot of children here….

Rexinasaurus · 11/11/2025 13:55

‘And some will tell you, well, Nigel this is not actually a popular policy in the country, but then I've never ever spent my time being a populist politician.’

😂😂🙈 Well, Nigel… he’s a caricature of himself.

Thank you.

This illustrates one of the big problems that I have with Reform. It is a populist party, in its true sense of saying loudly and brashly what its voters want to hear and keeping tight-lipped about the qualifications and trade-offs those things bring. And Farage is the embodiment of that brand of populism.

Reform wants to lift the cap because so many of its supporters claim welfare. They’d be doubly pleased to get the extra and think it was denied to others.

Family matters to Farage? My fat arse it does.

The YouGov below showed Reform are most against lifting the two cap out of all parties.

Their voters don’t actually want that.

EasternStandard · 11/11/2025 14:09

Labour want it abolished

Reform want it kept.

And it is unpopular across the board to get rid of it.

justasking111 · 11/11/2025 14:15

I never considered family allowance when having a baby. They'd have to add a zero to this payment before I considered it a worthwhile amount.

MyNeedyLilacBird · 11/11/2025 14:31

I've been lurking for a while on the thread. I've honestly have never felt so bad and genuinely feel/worry there's no way back for the uk. The issues are so deeply rooted that I don't think anyone can fix them at this point. I don't see how we can survive another 3 and a half years of this labour government. It all just feels so pessimistic at the moment that my husband and I think the only option is to leave the country. We're 'non working people' so clearly despised by this government.

Oh dear that came out a lot more negative than I expected

RelativePitch · 11/11/2025 14:40

@justasking111 the child benefit cap they're talking about lifting isn't the old style family allowance. It's the amount of children you can claim for tax credits/ universal credit which can bring in £1000s more in support for a family.

Damnthetorpedoes · 11/11/2025 14:52

The Tories returning to government now would be like a breath of fresh air versus this fetid, rotten Labour abomination.

Fair enough. But it would take a lot to persuade me that Farage is bucking the trend and going against his support because he genuinely and compassionately thinks the two-child cap should go.

This is aimed squarely at the pockets of Reform voters, whatever a minority or a majority of them think. If it is a minority who approve, I’d think he’s calculating that those who benefit will clap him and the others will forget about it, and aren’t interested in the detail of our colossal and crippling public spending anyway.

Idk why he did that announcement but I looked at DM comments under it and they were hugely against, it’s also 80% Reform against, Labour much more for it.

It’s also the only time that Reform lost a few points in polling. It really isn’t popular with their voters.

The only thing that might happen is Labour steal
the thunder anyway and annoy more people to go to Reform.

Although Conservatives a better bet for reduced spending, whether the electorate will forgive and swing enough not sure.

TheNuthatch · 11/11/2025 15:38

@HopeMumsnet Thank you. Hopefully that's the end of it now and we can stick to the thread topic.

@MyNeedyLilacBird Welcome. I think many of us feel that same pessimism, hence this thread. Labour have really made a mess of things. I think I'm going mad sometimes, but this thread helps.

@RelativePitch Thank you. Its easy to mix this up with child benefit.

I’m really really shocked.

Green deputy leader Rachel Millward is leading opposition to the housing of 600 asylum seekers in her local area - despite her party's vow to 'welcome' migrants.

In a recent letter to the home office Ms Millward complained about Government plans to temporarily use a military site in East Sussex as asylum accommodation.

Yeh I think that was a mistake from Reform, but it doesn't really matter if Labour are going to abolish it anyway. Reform can then campaign to tighten the criteria, so its a win win for them.
Perhaps they were trying to borrow from the family values thing that worked so well for Trump? I think Farage recognises that it didn't land well as he mentioned it again at his latest speech, reiterating that Reform's policy was only for working parents.

I think that most of what Labour does now, is purely numerical, predicated on attempting to secure a 2029 GE victory.

They know that they are hugely unpopular at the moment, so they may as well shoot the lights out, as others have said.

What is ultimately for the good of the UK, be damned.

This is what 14 years in opposition does to people - makes them terribly bitter and bent out of shape.

🙄🙄🙄

ALL politicians are two-faced chancers to some degree. But the left (most definitely including the Greens) are easily the worst: they spend their time parading their ‘virtuous’ views and criticising and denigrating people who don’t agree. And then they do the opposite when their policies and promises affect them in ways that don’t suit them. Absolute stinking hypocrites.

She said her 'strong objection' to the use of Crowborough training camp for housing migrants was based on 'safety' fears for both locals and asylum seekers themselves.

The number of people receiving jobless benefits without having to look for work has climbed above four million for the first time.

Figures published by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show the number of Universal Credit (UC) claimants with no requirement to look for a job rose to 4.03 million in October.

Funnily enough, the "Refugees Welcome" SNP have reacted in the same manner about the upcoming use of the Inverness barracks to house asylum seekers; SNP councillor Raymond Bremner is not happy, and neither is Lib Dem MP Angus MacDonald:

Angus MacDonald says he's concerned those asylum seekers housed at the army installation may congregate in Inverness.
