@Blossomtoes I wish you were nearer, you would be very welcome. I often think a big meet up of all our regulars on here would be lovely, we would never run out of interesting things to chat about.

Another who would love this.
some fabulous cooking going on today, I’m staring at the fridge & freezer hoping for some inspiration I’m in a can’t be arsed mood it’s grey & feels quite chilly I’ve put the heating back on.

placemats · 16/11/2025 12:47

I'm going to be in my new shed after a lunch doing a bit of diy, measure twice cut once, and having battered haddock with homemade chips, peas and a parsley sauce.

The sun is finally shining 🌟. A meetup sounds good but where is the big question.

placemats · 16/11/2025 12:49

I agree with you @bombastix

Well I am the outlier here in as much as I don’t think Mahmoud’s proposals are particularly outrageous if you compare them to elsewhere in Europe. There looks to have been some serious political tinkering to make them look tough. 20 years absurd. The possible idea of return seems uncertain.

And some of the more strident ideas from Denmark have not been imported ie “ghetto management”.

Mahmoud is one to watch imo. She is tough and effective. I can see her as PM.

@Evenstar your cooking sounds delicious.

The proposals aren’t fleshed out enough as yet. I have questions - what does safe mean in the context of returns and who is going to define it, why 20 years, etc. But I’m not going to immediately argue against them.

Dont like the suggestion from Yaxley Lennon and friends that this is a pathway to mass deportations however.

Notonthestairs · 16/11/2025 12:57

I have earache in one ear (burst the ear drum earlier this year) so I’m feeling sorry for myself.
I’d like to go to Evenstar’s for dinner please.

dontcallmelen · 16/11/2025 12:58

Littledrummer sounds a lot of hard work it will be worth it once it’s sorted hope Ds will be very happy in lovely new clean home.

dontcallmelen · 16/11/2025 12:59

Thank you for confirming that the BBC is funded by the licence fee payers- aka the British people.

How was i wrong? What money will this publicly funded organisation be handing over to Trump if not public funds?

For the tories to be cheering it on is disgusting and shows contempt for the British people (again).

The BBC is funded via licence payers (approximately 2/3rds) with the remainder from commercial activities (selling SCD globally etc)., and holds approx GBP 500 million in cash.

Were Trump to succeed in a claim for damages of, say, USD 5 bn (GBP 3.8 bn), then any settlement would naturally come from the BBC (and presumably the Government, ultimately) - licence payers would not be liable i.e. you as the licence holder would not be sued.

Edit: I suppose one could argue that ultimately the tax payer would meet any damages claim, given they stand behind the government.

Agree. And the creeping “deport them” attitudes from various parties including the Conservatives is vile.

This move on the right has taken less than 18 months. All it needed was a Labour government elected and then suddenly social media started to be flooded with this poison. I think it’s coordinated and Labour have just not been able to handle it. And it’s like quicksand; online then it’s like the five minute hate except all the time, you can get sucked in,

There is some hope. Across the world people are using social media less. The engagement is lessening. The only place in the world where it is going up in the US.

I do like being able to connect online, but isn’t it interesting that on this thread, we’d like to actually meet and have a proper connection? And we can discuss things alongside politics, food, snapshots of life… still human and pottering on

Yes and if they buckle they won't get a shot at running the country again for decades.

Hope you feel better soon @notonthestairs

Very good @MaybeNotBob

It would be amusing in theory if the BBC did give Trump a bloody nose on the legalities of reputational damage.

placemats · 16/11/2025 15:44

Earache reminds me of my first born baby daughter who suffered from it terribly - she had her airways cleared out because of meconium in broken waters and I'm sure that contributed. Much sympathy for you @Notonthestairs 💐. Get better soon x

cardibach · 16/11/2025 16:08

Get well soon @Notonthestairs
Weather here a bit dreary but dry earlier but sunny later this afternoon. I went to see The Choral. Completely recommend. Gently funny until it’s suddenly not.
Then I went for a cinnamon bun from a new little cafe owned and run by a Ukrainian refugee..
Christmas has arrived in Cardiff Bay and I’m not ready for it.

We saw The Choral on Thursday @cardibach it was brilliant and poignant and thought provoking.

DH and I have had several conversations about it, the latest this morning about how people in ordinary working class communities took part in choral singing, brass bands and had access to reading rooms and had access to educational opportunities at Working Men’s Institutes etc. There is a poverty of ambition in what is offered to children now and although the mill owner in the film wasn’t entirely altruistic he did fund the Choral Society in a gesture of philanthropy that many wealthy people don’t consider nowadays.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/11/2025 16:40

Busman's holiday for me today. Selling our wares (my sideline business) in West Sussex. Dry weather for both unloading and loading - always a positive.
Pity that Brexit and then the US tariffs have completely stuffed up my online international sales though...

Hope you are feeling better soon @Notonthestairs
