A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Right, I'm off to a bonfire with the family. I can't wait for all the bonfire night food! Potato pie and black peas round these parts, Followed by treacle toffee and parkin. Nom nom 😋

Have a lovely Saturday evening all. 💙

Enjoy! I love the cinder toffee :)

I think you’ve missed the point. This thread isn’t really about Reform. You’re completely off topic which is why people don’t necessarily think you are posting in good faith. This isn’t a Reform thread. There are many other threads where you’ll find like minded people who want to engage with what you have to say. Disagreeing with the government does not make one far right or necessarily a Reform supporter. It all sounds Labour supporter nonsense. The only one interested in discussing Reform in any depth appears to be you.

If you want a thread about Reform there’s always the Starmer thread 😊

NoWordForFluffy · 08/11/2025 18:32

I'd never heard of black peas until this week, and now I've heard of them twice!

If IT goes up and they put NI in salary sacrifice pensions, I can't imagine they'll keep many private sector voters. But they already know they're out next time, so it doesn't matter who they alienate. That's a dangerous government to have.

Interested in this thread?

i have no truck or loyalty to any party and generally believe that all MPs have their nose in the trough. But i hate this government so much and their complete disregard for the electorate, we’re ruined

Polaris81 · 08/11/2025 18:36

For anyone interested, there is an exceptional article in the FT -
‘The Politics of breaking manifesto promises’.

Probably the best piece I have read in weeks.

I highly recommend it.

Reform really are living rent free in people’s heads. They only have themselves to blame. If you constantly close down people’s valid experience and thoughts with abuse, then people will turn to those who appear to listen. It is like no one ever studied history.

I would say ex public sector jobs. As in retired or very close to retirement with cushy pensions and an early finish to your work life. What’s not to like about the party who fund that? People currently in the public sector, I’d say the tide is turning and it isn’t as taboo as it once was to not think of Labour as the saviour. Especially people who still have a way to go.

Yes I can understand that

Rexinasaurus · 08/11/2025 18:43

TheNuthatch · 08/11/2025 18:17

Yes totally agree.
But this current version of Labour have highlighted for me the huge difference in northern Labour voters, and those in Starmer's fan club. They have totally different views.

Oh that’s interesting. Explains why Reform won in Lancashire. My family there are still very much anti reform, more like the Starmer thread. Except they don’t spend their lives talking about reform, thankfully. They mention how disappointed they are with Starmer. But think they’ll always vote Labour.

Here's the FT article: https://www.ft.com/content/9e5655f7-85fe-4157-8ef4-709c238efa77

Wasn't behind a pay wall for me.

Behind a paywall for me I'm afraid.

My mum used to make the most amazing bonfire toffee. I've never been able to replicate it.

Octoberthewhatnow · 08/11/2025 19:27

Ooh cinder toffee! One of my faves, haven’t had it for years, enjoy 😍
Just coming back here for some normality, some of the replies on other threads at the minute are grinding my gears!
I am paraphrasing but it is apparently now totally unreasonable to ask an employee to do something within their working hours. And all benefits in this country go to the wealthy and the elderly.
I read a pps post and I’ve opened a chocolate orange, so I shan’t engage with any of that other nonsense. Less than 4 years to go…….

redange · 08/11/2025 20:03

The big difference in 1997 ( i was 22 and just finished University) being the country was economically advantage. This despite Majors disaster with the ERM in 1992 the country had really bounced back. The Labour Party under Blair was elected because after 19 years the constant 'narrative' about the evil Tories finally stuck. The electorate was taken in by a smart talkative man who promised to be a 'Tory' economically but spend on public services like a true Keynesian . Blair was able to do this because the debt was marginal and for the previous 4 years I believe the country actually ran a ' Surplus'. Clarke and Lamont were actually Economists who ran the country within its means.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/11/2025 20:03

I've just hidden a thread on the potential salary sacrifice NI. All the Labour fans acting like Labour doesn't float all their ideas in the media, including for the forthcoming budget.

Can you hide people too? Genuine question, there's a few I'd rather not see

I saw the salary sacrifice one, was about to post and thought, nah. Why give the self righteous the chance to tell you how ‘fair’ they think it is and how we’ve been tax avoiding through salary sacrifice til now 😂

At some point you just see the same stuff and think yeh no

I’m guessing Labour will see the impact of the last few weeks on their polling whatever pro Labour do

That working class chip you describe runs deep! I have a northern wc background so I know what you mean. My extended family would never ever vote tory. I'm not sure they even know why, its just DNA. I'm the black sheep obviously 🤪
Most of them will vote Reform though.

Tory black sheep here to ( from a strong Labour upbringing )
Again I think my hard Labour cousins will vote Reform …Theyve said so
My dh will vote Labour whatever they do.
