I'd like to say something calm and balanced about the knife crime situation
I'm obviously not going to try and say it on that thread...I nearly did, but not worth it
Something that got discussed a lot in my circle a few years back was the change of area where the stuff was taking place. So previously there were areas that you saw as "no go" areas (unless you lived there).
The really big change was that it spread out - and it is everywhere now. So people who previously didn't "see" the problem now do see it.
I think we are currently seeing chickens come home to roost on a lot of issues.
This is just one of them. Being too soft on crime has been a problem for absolutely ages - 25+ years? Actually, when were we ever taking it seriously?
No effort to control it in the areas where it was taking place (possibly snobbery against the people living there) the obvious result is the one we have - it was not contained, so it became more widespread.
I obviously realise statistics are manipulated, and I'm not going to study them in depth to decide whether certain crimes have gone up.
But we have a historical problem with being far too soft on crime. It probably predates some posters here even being born.
Also, drug use and drug dealing have gone up quite a lot, haven't they? Or is it that more people are open about it now?
editing to add - worked with one guy who grew up in Tottenham, said anything that was reported to the police just got ignored, the MPs didn't care, and everything just felt hopeless. I think he's approaching 60 now. So this is an age problem, but I do feel like all politicians have been snobby and ignored those who were struggling in those situations.
