A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

We really are in a cyber 1984 people’s liking for watching insta clips and TikToks etc is blinding them to the fact that they’re being manipulated.

I was just musing as I listened to a Labour MP struggle on how they’d defend a manifesto break after it happens that MPs need to do media rounds.

I think a main reason Rayner had to go was that Streeting and others couldn’t cover for her after she lied. They couldn’t do the media rounds.

It could get so bad that MPs can’t defend Labour and choose to just go instead. Not yet but with some more rounds of this chaos.

Yes thats true.
Using your Rayner example, they were sent out to defend what turned out later to be lies.
They're being asked to damage their own reputation. There must be a point where they start refusing.
I noticed it was a junior minister sent out on Thursday to defend Lammy, not a cabinet minister.

My 22 year old son banned anyone in the family from using tik tok a couple of years ago. So none of us uploaded the app or we deleted it.

Rivalled · 08/11/2025 10:22

Same here @justasking111 I don’t think people have a good understanding of how much these apps know about you, what they’re doing with that data, or what they’re using their money for.

zuckerberg’s kids live off grid on an organic farm in Hawaii growing their own veg..meanwhile, he would’ve sold human rights compromises to get into china.

I’m not Canute but neither do I think there’s nothing we can do or it’s inevitable to recreate the concentration of power of medieval kings.

justasking111 · 08/11/2025 10:28

DH retired is still a company director nominally, the boys run the business. He has to get photographed etc before 18 November. To prove he's the genuine director of a company he's been a part of for decades. His father and grandfather before him.

If he doesn't it's a 5k fine to start with.

He's not amused.

Yes it’s a Labour’s not working thread anyway.

Quite. A teacher who doesn’t agree with Labour will always attract teacher bashers who think everyone who doesn’t support Labour is far right. Sorry, I thought it would have finally gone away.

I've a couple of teacher friends who joined the profession in middle age. They keep their heads down politically.

Rivalled · 08/11/2025 10:31

Don’t you think Kemi has to come out with a really strong statement of key measures tories would do to counter this and grow the economy? I know we are sadly years away from getting rid of them, but think this is her moment to try and rebuild Tory support.

upseedaisee · 08/11/2025 10:33

Rivalled · 08/11/2025 07:58

Wow - it looks like NI on pension contributions is happening too. How many ways can the govt rob me in the name of fairness?

So, just out of interest, let me ask.... Will this also include the public sector?? No thought not. I simply hate that private sector pensions are going to be done over again by yet another Labour government when the fat pensions of the publec sector are protected. Gits.

EmeraldRoulette · 08/11/2025 10:33

Yes, I blame Tony Blair for so many things

I had a conversation with my mum about the influence of individuals on politics. Again it's an area where people make assumptions and think you are a crazy conspiracy theorist if you mention it. But I would imagine the people we know about are not half as bad as the ones we don't know about!

It is genuinely worrying how an individual can influence things on such a huge scale. It's a bit like in a workplace where one person can poison the well incredibly easily

As an aside, I thought maybe we'd had another sneaky song title but I suspect it's inadvertent 😂

Definitely! Would be missing a trick if she doesn't.

Agree

I think the Tories have a massive opportunity here and I actually can't understand why they're not taking it

It feels like the only person who is really trying to make an effort is Robert Jenrick but they need a proper coordinated PR campaign

There used to be a local Conservatives group here. I looked it up and it no longer exists.

Rivalled · 08/11/2025 10:37

If this hasn’t demonstrated that nobody in politics currently is looking after the private sector or private sector workers I don’t know what will!

Legolava · 08/11/2025 10:39

What sane government, given the cost of the state pension, would want to stop people from saving into pensions as much as possible. What sane government would want business to fail with the added cost. What sane government would not want to encourage people from being state reliant to independent. It’s almost like they want to go for scorched Earth. There will be nothing left. People will just stop working and they will buy extra time off and such like. Why work 50% of the year and more for free to fund everyone else? Just drop days. It’s almost like they don’t need to fund the public sector properly. They are burning everything to the ground.

upseedaisee · 08/11/2025 10:40

@Frankenchino

I really do think you need to go find a reform thread, or start a 'Reform isn't working' thread.
In general, we on this thread have little truck with Reform and not really into giving them line space.
Just a suggestion.

Thank you. That was a good read. He seems convinced that Starmer's days are numbered, which would mean Reeves too. We could be facing a lurch further to the left within months 😬

Sorry, but here I go again

"People" by the 1975 said all of this

"wake up, wake up, wake up, we are appalling
And we need to stop just watching shit in bed"

Same song that describes our era as "I don't like going outside so bring me everything here".

but their song "the man who fell in love with a robot" came out earlier and is also really prescient

I promise that's the end of Emerald's Songs for the day 😂

this isn't stuff any government can do anything about though. I am going to reread Johann Hari's book "Stolen Focus" as it helps me get off-line ironically!

Don't worry about it. There is an assumption that we (this thread) are all Reform supporters. We attract lots of that. Its the only stick they have left to beat us with.
I don't do Reform bashing, not my style.
I wish those who repeat and post everything Reform/Robinson/Musk say and do, would realise that they are advertising for them!

Unless the pension thing is a sneaky way to get people to reduce hours in the public sector

But no, they're not going to try that to reduce the size of the public sector because they are the ultimate gravy train employers.

I kind of do have a theory about why they're burning everything to the ground, but it's such conspiracy territory. I don't think I can say it out loud. I suspect there's a couple of other posters who know what I mean though.

I’m no longer a Director, thank God, but this may be caused by the fact that Companies House has been for years ridiculously lax on ID and other control procedures, meaning huge amounts of various types of fraud. Way, way behind where the banks have been for at least 20 years.

looks like they may at long last be trying to catch up.

upseedaisee · 08/11/2025 10:54

Well, wearing my tinfoil hat this morning; I mentioned several threads ago that Larry Ellison is involved with Leo Blair in a digial business and guess who is the front runner for providing the software for the digial ID programme.

Nope, it won't. The public sector pension is ringfenced and protected from any change in legislation. It will only be the poor saps in the private sector that this will affect. For goodness 'sake the public sector get a 20% match on their salary sacrifice.
