A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@TheNuthatch sorry I meant Philip Hammond

I've got four people by the name of Chris in my life at the moment and I got overwhelmed 😂

I thought that within the Tories, Philip Grayling got criticised for being too much of an accountant.

I was puzzled at the time, because someone who is detailed in accounting is the person I want in charge of the economy ...seems like a really odd criticism, is it just me?

Do you mean Philip Hammond or Chris Grayling? I think Philip Hammond was known as "Spreadsheet Phil". Kind of wishing we had him back now.

Starmer would do well to stand up to his backbenchers, who do they think they are? Isn’t the idea that as an MP you rally round and support your leader rather than try and cause trouble? Many of them have tiny majorities, think they have ideas above their station.
Yes perhaps they would prefer the IMF. Hope they all get their comeuppance.

I suspect some of those new Labour backbenchers were as hoodwinked as the constituents they mis-sold the Labour party to.

Well said 👏
Lots of the papers have picked the story up now.

I'd love to see somebody sue the BBC re their GI stance. Martine would be ideal for a test case!

Sorry, cross posted with Nuthatch

Yes, that was it!

The whole of government needs a spreadsheet! I'm not even joking.

Full disclosure, I have some chronic health issues and anxiety too, since we're being open about it. A few years ago I was really unwell and not able to work, but DH just supported me. I now work from home and I can't tell you all how much better I've felt psycologically since being able to work again.

I have a very good friend who hasn't worked for years, he gets a variety of benefits (and he does also have health issues, not denying that), and he is utterly bored, miserable and lonely.

Edited to add - I have a horror of being beholden to the state and allowing them to meddle with me. The thought of allowing the state that level of intrusion into my life, medical history and finances horrifies me.
I appreciate that some people don't have a choice of course.

Edited

Also full disclosure. Our Ds1 is now 15. he was diagnosed with autism and global development delay 11 years ago. Since the he has been diagnosed with Tourettes, adhd, sensory processing disorder and low cognitive function.

We never applied for any sort of DLA reasoning that we could (at the time) easily afford to cover all of his needs ourselves and that due to this we did not feel it was fair to burden the state in anyway.

VAT on school fees comes in. The rhetoric from labour about how people like us are pure scum and deserve to bleed. We thought 'fuck it, and fuck them'. Applied for DLA and have received it for him. £412 a month. 10 years after he was eligible. It was 100% a feeling of 'let's get a little back when we are being screwed over so hard'.

I sometimes feel a bit guilty when they talk of the welfare bill. But when I think of how much we are being taxed (ironically, the £412 is roughly the VAT bill for his school fees) I think screw it.

I think Reeves can add up (sort of).
Its the unintended consequences that she and Starmer don't seem to foresee, even though they are obvious to everyone else.

Good on you. Why should you pay and pay and pay some more and then get shafted, and get nothing back?

Yes, this is exactly what I said earlier. It makes you feel that you might as well try and get something back. I haven't yet, but I will it the tax rises are too much to bear. II would imagine this will be replicated across the country, where people who have been advised to apply haven't, as they feel bad and that they can afford to manage. Now they're changing the game and there will be more players.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/11/2025 18:54

I'm thinking of applying for PIP for a condition I have.

MantleStatue · 06/11/2025 18:56

Exactly. When the WFA thing came in, the government said if you got pension credit then you would not have it taken away. AgeUK reported that they could not even answer all the calls from people asking for help to apply for pension credit- people who previously would not have applied because they felt they were doing just fine thanks.

As I keep wanging on- Labour forget that people have agency. They forget that their 'policies' change how people behave. It's so so stupid of them.

I don’t blame you. Labour treat people badly and everyone reacts. I’m doing whatever to repay the lack of respect they use for most of the electorate.

So much this. I think they have an inkling it’s why they vie for control over leading.

This is exactly it. My mantra has always been "don't blame the player, blame the game"

Octoberthewhatnow · 06/11/2025 19:01

20 days to go to the budget and I am so bloody over it already. I can’t plan, I can’t recruit, I’m trying to work out what the hell I’m going to need to do for my staff, who, according to this fucking government aren’t “working people” either and how I’m going to afford it? I cannot let them be shafted, but it’s not a bottomless pit?
This weeks word salad of “it’s everyone else’s fault but your life is about to get WAY more expensive and shit ” hasn’t helped. In any way.
The country is a business. If I ran my business like this we’d have gone bust, many years ago 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

EasternStandard · 06/11/2025 19:02

There’s a graduate jobs thread that is so depressing. Some ik wanted Labour. Idk how they can see the lack of jobs and not join the dots.

It’s actually really depressing and concerning. Jobs are everything especially when you’re young.

I feel your pain, we're in the same boat and I'm numb.
Your description of the word salad from Reeves is spot on. She doesn't give two hoots about us, she just wants the bond markets to be nice to her.

You what now?
They don't see Labour at fault for the lack of graduate jobs? They're the first to go when the govt decide to tax jobs. Its not rocket science.
