How to put weight on as quick as possible?

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I didn't think the weight loss board was right really. And please don't accuse me of stealth bragging because I'm really not. So I'm 5'7 and weigh 8st10lb. BMI of 19. I wear a size 6 clothing and honestly I hate the way I look. I feel like I look too skinny and I don't think it's a good look at all. When I was younger I was a very healthy size 10 and when I see pics from back then I can see that I just looked so much better overall. Since having my lovely DS 3 years ago I ended up with an overactive thyroid which causes unintentional weight loss and that's when I went from an 8 to a 6. But my thyroid is fine now and though I do eat, and not even eat healthy, I can't seem to put weight on. My appetite since having my son has took a major nosedive and I have to basically force myself to eat because I know if I don't I'll just get even thinner😬 can anyone who's been in a similar situation or knows about this kind of thing please recommend some things I should eat to help with putting on the weight. So as not to drip feed, I'm a very heavy smoker and drink a shed load of tea/coffee a day and definitely do not exercise 😅 TIA for any help at all😊

Smoking supresses appetite. Quit and you will be able to eat. Exercise and you'll be hungry. Do both or either and you will improve your health and body massively! As an underweight heavy smoking non exerciser you are really heading for disaster.
(I say that as a vaping ex smoker who hated exercise til I randomly found a sport I liked in my 50s and now am HELL of a lot fitter and healthier)

Roseshoe · 02/11/2025 22:00

Stop smoking - or at least cut down. Do some exercise. Then you’ll get an appetite. Eat peanut butter and chocolate spread.

IstillloveKingThistle · 02/11/2025 22:02

Baileys is your friend.
Drink a fuck ton - it’s in abundance at this time of year.
I’ve put on 7lb in a matter of weeks 🙄🙄🙄

Bread.

I've been there. After months of ill health and then surgery I was under 5 stone and needed to gain weight fast. You can buy high calorie drinks called fortisip if you're finding it very difficult to eat. But the most healthy way to gain weight would be to eat proper food though. Try to increase your portions gradually. Your appitite does adjust to eating less, and now needs to adjust to eating more. Eat healthy fats like nuts, avacado, Greek yoghurt. Full fat diary - milk, cheese, butter, cream. Make meals that have cream based sauces. Eat lots of meat

But yes, I agree with previous posters about the smoking, and excersise - try starting with a 20 min walk a day, or lift a few weights a couple of times a week

I know smoking suppresses appetite but before I had my son I'd been smoking for 24 years and absolutely loved my food so it's never really been a suppressant for me before. I'm blaming hormones 🤨 I'm going to be honest, I can't see myself quitting smoking, I love it too much and it really is my only vice. The only exercise I like is swimming so maybe if I try carve out time to go then maybe that could make me hungry. Worth a shot. Thank you😊

Everytime you drink tea or coffee have a snack, it can be anything, nuts, cheese, biscuits, chocolate.

I have recently got back into eating peanut butter sandwiches in the middle of the night when my insomnia is in full swing. Really don't like chocolate spread though🤢 God I hate exercise 😂

Smoking is horrendous for you. Swap at least some of those cigarettes for small snacks. Look for high calorie content. Nuts? Coconut?

Hope you're better after your surgery now💐 I have tried the fortisip drinks but they leave me really bloated and snotty. I've got a sensitivity to dairy. Though I do like to eat cheese and could definitely eat lots of meat😁 thanks for your tips😊

youre smoking which surprises your appetite and and drinking tea and coffee which is probably filling your stomach.
so quitting or cutting down seems the most obvious solution

failing that, have full fat milk lattes instead of black coffee. Have some mochas either whipped cream. Try add in some protein shakes or make your own smoothies with added nuts and Greek yog etc. eat calorie dense food as much as possible, eg handful of nuts. Add butter oil or dairy like cream and cheese to anything you’re eating.
try to eat little and often. Have snacks out nearby that you can grab and eat easily

failing that. I heard Ryan gosling recently gained a load of weight by melting tubs of ice cream and drinking them,

You realise I drink 25-30 a day. Is that too many snacks I wonder 🤔 😂

WonderingWanda · 02/11/2025 22:13

You need to load calorie dense foods into your diet, things that won't fill your stomach with bulk and make you feel too full.

Peanut butter. Add butter to sauces or on vegetables. Olive oil onto salad. Full fat milks and yogurts. Start with adding 200 calories extra a day then build from that.

Breakfast. Toast with butter and peanut butter on it and if you can stand it sliced banana.

Porridge but with cream, berries and flaked almonds.
Eggs but add hollandaise sauce

Was in a very similar position for years, overactive thyroid too. Meal replacement shakes (on top of having your usual meals), drink full fat milk, loads of butter on everything. I found if I ate first thing in the morning (usually a breakfast dodger) it increased my appetite for the rest of the day too.
But yeah, go heavy on the shakes and full fat milk. Took me a while but I eventually started looking a bit healthier after a few months.

Hollyjollynights · 02/11/2025 22:17

30 cups of tea a day is quite excessive, and can lead to insomnia which you said you have but also that’s soooo much liquid to be drinking and filling your stomach with. No wonder you’re not hungry.
could you swap one out a day for a biscuit, then two out a day and so on.

yeesh · 02/11/2025 22:17

Can you cut down on the tea/coffee? It will be
filling you up with little calories

I'm a breakfast dodger too🤭 I just feel sick at the thought of eating in the morning, always have. Yourself and @WonderingWanda and @Hollyjollynights all saying drink full fat milk. As I said upthread, I've got a sensitivity to raw dairy that's why I have drank soya milk for the past 20 years. I realise it makes it bloody awkward because most weight gain things use full fat milk😭

Are you sure it's not just because your diet is unhealthy? I am exactly the same size as you and currently feel a bit too big. If you're smoking a lot and eating rubbish, you're going to look a bit gaunt?

It makes me sad to think of missing out on a cuppa or a coffee😅 @Hollyjollynights I've had insomnia since I was a child which was obviously before I was mainlining so much caffeine 😂

How tall are you and how much do you weigh if you don't mind me asking? 😊

IMTHECRAZYOLDLADY · 02/11/2025 22:24

Try to eat something every two hours, you'll find your appetite naturally increases. This works for my autistic son, who often forgets to eat. It's not instant,it's surprisingly difficult to gain weight, but it helps increase appetite. I know it's easy to say 'just eat cake', but it's far better to aim for high nutritive value

youalright · 02/11/2025 22:24

Milkshakes with full fat milk and cheese and mayo on everything. Or you could be like me get hypothyroidism go on antipsychotics then you just have to eat a lettuce leaf and you gain half a stone.

TheChosenTwo · 02/11/2025 22:25

Cheese and nuts, I’ll have a bit of both if I’m low on calories for the day. Just a couple of slices of cheese and a small handful of nuts.
jeepers you’re drinking a lot of liquid 😂
