How to put weight on as quick as possible?

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I didn't think the weight loss board was right really. And please don't accuse me of stealth bragging because I'm really not. So I'm 5'7 and weigh 8st10lb. BMI of 19. I wear a size 6 clothing and honestly I hate the way I look. I feel like I look too skinny and I don't think it's a good look at all. When I was younger I was a very healthy size 10 and when I see pics from back then I can see that I just looked so much better overall. Since having my lovely DS 3 years ago I ended up with an overactive thyroid which causes unintentional weight loss and that's when I went from an 8 to a 6. But my thyroid is fine now and though I do eat, and not even eat healthy, I can't seem to put weight on. My appetite since having my son has took a major nosedive and I have to basically force myself to eat because I know if I don't I'll just get even thinner😬 can anyone who's been in a similar situation or knows about this kind of thing please recommend some things I should eat to help with putting on the weight. So as not to drip feed, I'm a very heavy smoker and drink a shed load of tea/coffee a day and definitely do not exercise 😅 TIA for any help at all😊

How about some double cream in your coffees.

I find ice cream so easy to eat that I can put away a carton of Hagen Daz or Ben & Jerrys over an evening - this could get expensive right enough.

Nuts, cheese, mayo and clotted cream are all very calorie dense.

These are all the things, along with the already mentioned Baileys, that I eat in abundance over the festive period and I always put on loads of weight that I spend January & February trying to get off.

Can't have double cream because of the dairy but if the dairy free one mentioned upthread is just as fattening then I'll definitely do that😁 I can definitely eatany many mince pies over the festive period 😂

Smoking isn’t your only vice if you drink 25/30 cups of tea / coffee a day. Both are horrendous for you. I’m a tea addict but nowhere near that scale.

It’s the smoking keeping you thin. As well as being absolutely dreadful in every other aspect for you. But you know this.

Devilsmommy · 02/11/2025 23:08

@Back21970 forgot to say unfortunately I really don't like Bailey's unfortunately 😂

I have found the ‘pies, chips, beer & Haagen Dazs’ diet to be a highly effective method of rapid weight gain over the years. It’s very simple ; just consume copious quantities of all four items.

Devilsmommy · 02/11/2025 23:13

@SpottyAardvark pies, chips and Hagen dazs I can do but I really don't like beer. I'm sure I could give the other 3 a bash though 😂

I can’t believe you avoid dairy as it makes you snotty but confess to being a heavy smoker. Snotty is the last of your problems, it’ll be the cancer that will be the real kick in the bollocks.

Back21970 · 02/11/2025 23:15

Sorry, didn’t read all your posts so missed the dairy intolerance, that makes it a bit more difficult.

Definitely check out all the dairy free options but unfortunately these tend to be more expensive too.

Weight train to bulk up, whilst eating ice cream, peanut butter, egg & butter omelets on toasts, bacon & eggs, nuts, seeds, chocolate, every couple of hours, no matter what. Rice, pasta, bread, milky drinks with honey. Honestly, i would (and have) gained a stone in a month doing this in the past.

StarDolphins · 02/11/2025 23:17

When I went far too thin, I ate lots of peanuts & chocolate!

We have a Stop Smoking forum right here one Mumsnet!

It's not just snottiness. It's the bloating and stomach pains

I'd have to leave out the dairy but there's alot there that I could easily do. Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for 😊

What are you like with butter and cheese? Are they as bad as other dairy?

Mash can be very calorie dense if you add lots of butter and cheese. As pp said if you can tolerate cooked dairy then make porridge with double cream.

Cut down on veggies temporarily so you are eating a higher proportion of protein and carbs with every meal. Cake after tea.

Lack of appetite in a morning can mean not enough calories the previous day and resulting low blood sugar. Try a lite meal with protein before bed and see if that helps or even a sugary drink 30 mins before you get up.

Good luck!

Butter and cheese are absolutely fine. It's mainly milk and cream that cause an upset so could definitely try your options. Thank you so much😊

There are alternatives to fortisips and its worth trying those. Eg complan & ensure. Boots stock both. You might find you tolerate a different brand better.

Also worth pointing out that like when you try to lose weight, you don't have to go all in if it's unsustainable - eg maybe you can't have the above several times a day, but maybe 2 or 3 week is manageable for you - or even 1 a week. It's still extra calories you don't usually get.

Noting that you don't tolerate dairy well, potatoes, pasta and bread are your friends. Enjoy :)

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 02/11/2025 23:29

You need to cut back on the fluid and caffeine intake… try to reduce the smoking too if you can’t give up.

Adding Peanut butter to smoothies using barista style oat milk and huel protein powder.
Peanuts in curries, extra spoon of oil when cooking, tahini paste, vegan lurpack etc all good for adding calories with very little extra volume.

Bread

I do try and eat bread but when I lost my appetite I started using tortilla wraps instead. Maybe I should go back to my extra thick white bread🤤

I get you, and it isn't stealth boasting. I lost a lot of weight after an illness and looked awful. I don't smoke but definitely agree with PP - quit now.
Follow a balanced diet with all your main food groups. Do weight training to build muscle.

MatchaMatchaMatcha · 02/11/2025 23:31

Do your research before adding protein powder to your diet, a recent study found many of the mainstream brands contain high levels of toxic stuff - there was an article in the news a few weeks ago, will see if I can find it.

Pasta and bread are definitely doable. I gained weight years ago from constantly eating pasta and eggs

How about milkshakes/ ice cream/ Hot chocolate? I don’t even know if that would help as I was going to say fortisip!

Or breakfast drinks/ bars for snacks?

Make sure you are taking vitamins too.

If you keep struggling I wonder if you could see a dietitian through a GP referral?
