How to put weight on as quick as possible?

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I didn't think the weight loss board was right really. And please don't accuse me of stealth bragging because I'm really not. So I'm 5'7 and weigh 8st10lb. BMI of 19. I wear a size 6 clothing and honestly I hate the way I look. I feel like I look too skinny and I don't think it's a good look at all. When I was younger I was a very healthy size 10 and when I see pics from back then I can see that I just looked so much better overall. Since having my lovely DS 3 years ago I ended up with an overactive thyroid which causes unintentional weight loss and that's when I went from an 8 to a 6. But my thyroid is fine now and though I do eat, and not even eat healthy, I can't seem to put weight on. My appetite since having my son has took a major nosedive and I have to basically force myself to eat because I know if I don't I'll just get even thinner😬 can anyone who's been in a similar situation or knows about this kind of thing please recommend some things I should eat to help with putting on the weight. So as not to drip feed, I'm a very heavy smoker and drink a shed load of tea/coffee a day and definitely do not exercise 😅 TIA for any help at all😊

On paper you’re a perfectly healthy weight. Maybe it’s a bit low for your frame, I don’t know. How is posture?
Just bunging a load of calories you may not need isn’t going to benefit you.
Decrease smoking, drink less caffeine, do some exercise.
Your weight really isn’t the problem here.

It makes me sad to think of missing out on a cuppa or a coffee😅 @Hollyjollynights I've had insomnia since I was a child which was obviously before I was mainlining so much caffeine 😂

Fair enough. Could you try milk alternatives though like oat or coconut. Just try pick the highest calorie ones where you can. 30 teas and coffees is still really a lot though if basically just water, if you’re trying to gain weight.
could you swap a few out for hot chocolate even? That might help if it’s partly the ritual of a hot drink you like? Hot chocolate can be high cal and you can add marshmallows and whipped cream too

Baileys in ice cream…. You’re welcome!

Try to eat something every two hours, you'll find your appetite naturally increases. This works for my autistic son, who often forgets to eat. It's not instant,it's surprisingly difficult to gain weight, but it helps increase appetite. I know it's easy to say 'just eat cake', but it's far better to aim for high nutritive value

My 3 year old is on the pathway for autism assessment and he has major food issues but he also eats every two hours. Maybe it's worth a shot because maybe it could also help with getting my son to eat more. Thank you for this😊

My sister has always been very slim but she was very underweight once due to IBS and depression. She put weight back on with hummus and crisps!

To be honest though, being a heavy smoker and drinking far too much coffee and tea is very likely to be the cause of your lack of appetite. Our bodies change as they get older, they're less forgiving. I hope you can make healthy changes for the sake of your son. Good luck with it all.

Milkshakes with full fat milk and cheese and mayo on everything. Or you could be like me get hypothyroidism go on antipsychotics then you just have to eat a lettuce leaf and you gain half a stone.

Sorry for your troubles. I know people who take anti psychotic medication and it really does make them gain weight. Can't do the full fat milk because of dairy sensitivity but cheese and mayo I can definitely do 😁

I do have soya milk which I've had for the past 20 years. Hot chocolate would be ok but couldn't add cream because of the dairy☹️

Heavenly whipped is dairy free squirty cream and excellent. Morrisons sell it and so do quite a few supermarkets now.

I was thinking that this was probably going to be the best way to go tbh. Does a non dairy protein shake exist I wonder 🤔

Oooh looks like a trip to Morrisons is in store then. Is it nice in coffee?

You realise I drink 25-30 a day. Is that too many snacks I wonder 🤔 😂

That's why you have insomnia, unless you are drinking decaffeinated tea and coffee.

I can't see myself quitting smoking, I love it too much

Do you not see the irony in wanting to improve your health yet not wanting to address the main reasons why you are underweight and sleeping badly?

You have a three year old. Do you not love him enough to feel a moral obligation to look after your health?

FurForksSake · 02/11/2025 22:39

Yes, huel is the first that comes to mind.

PermanentTemporary · 02/11/2025 22:42

I only have to breathe in to gain a kilo so I’ll play.

Have you had a medical review? Losing weight unintentionally with no exercise in a heavy smoker sounds like something that should be checked out soon. Like, this week.

Other than that; dried fruit, nuts, bread and butter, avocado, cheese.

FurForksSake · 02/11/2025 22:42

oatly cream, oatly barista or alpro barista are best for in coffee. Heavily whipped is for on the top of your hot chocolate. Make hot chocolate with almond or coconut milk I think is nicest.

fancytoes · 02/11/2025 22:43

If you’re having trouble with dairy, go 70s: meat and carbs. Fish pie, shepherd’s pie, any pies with pastry, pasta. All with lots of veg.

That way, you’re not loading loads of sugar and junk into your diet, you’re just eating hearty meals.

I've had insomnia since I was a child so that isn't the cause of it obviously. And it's not improving my health I was asking for, it was a way to gain weight because though I'm not technically underweight, I'd feel better being slightly bigger. And please don't insinuate that I don't love my son enough, you've got no idea how my life has got me to this point and that my son is my absolute world. I'm hoping you just said that to try and shock me into making a change because it felt really nasty otherwise. Thanks for replying anyway

I did have an overactive thyroid which caused the weight loss but that's been sorted now. I'm just stuck at 8st10lb and can't seem to gain. Thanks for the tips😊

This actually sounds like food id enjoy eating. Perfect for this time of year too. 70's diet sounds good 😁

The smoking and lack of exercise are your problems here. You probably don't have any muscle and your skin tone won't be great. Crack them and you'll look and feel a million times better. Don't just gain weight ffs.
Having a low BMI isn't a bad thing in itself if you are fit.

yeesh · 02/11/2025 22:17

Can you cut down on the tea/coffee? It will be
filling you up with little calories

And huge quantities of caffeine. That much of it is seriously bad for you.

Back21970 · 02/11/2025 23:01

How about some double cream in your coffees.

I find ice cream so easy to eat that I can put away a carton of Hagen Daz or Ben & Jerrys over an evening - this could get expensive right enough.

Nuts, cheese, mayo and clotted cream are all very calorie dense.

These are all the things, along with the already mentioned Baileys, that I eat in abundance over the festive period and I always put on loads of weight that I spend January & February trying to get off.

NancyBellaDonna · 02/11/2025 23:02

You need to address your addictions.
Wean yourself off caffeine and then you will be able to sleep. Smoking is well known for causing sinus congestion. It might not be dairy foods causing your snots, especially if you can tolerate cheese. Assuming you live in UK the NHS runs a service for Smoking Cessation. You might be a good candidate for Zyban, or nicotine replacement therapy to help you through the nicotine withdrawal. It's also well known that people who give up smoking put on weight. The dairy has always caused snottiness, way before I started smoking. It's just milk and cream that do it. My little boy has CMPA which I'm assuming came from me. He can now eat dairy if it's cooked in things but can't drink milk. Thank you for the link though 😊
