How to put weight on as quick as possible?

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I didn't think the weight loss board was right really. And please don't accuse me of stealth bragging because I'm really not. So I'm 5'7 and weigh 8st10lb. BMI of 19. I wear a size 6 clothing and honestly I hate the way I look. I feel like I look too skinny and I don't think it's a good look at all. When I was younger I was a very healthy size 10 and when I see pics from back then I can see that I just looked so much better overall. Since having my lovely DS 3 years ago I ended up with an overactive thyroid which causes unintentional weight loss and that's when I went from an 8 to a 6. But my thyroid is fine now and though I do eat, and not even eat healthy, I can't seem to put weight on. My appetite since having my son has took a major nosedive and I have to basically force myself to eat because I know if I don't I'll just get even thinner😬 can anyone who's been in a similar situation or knows about this kind of thing please recommend some things I should eat to help with putting on the weight. So as not to drip feed, I'm a very heavy smoker and drink a shed load of tea/coffee a day and definitely do not exercise 😅 TIA for any help at all😊

Your lifestyle is incredibly unhealthy, you have a young DC, and the worry you post about is how you look?!

Heavy smoker, poor nutrition, no exercise, high caffeine, all serious risk factors now you are older.
Sorry but you sound in complete denial about how the tobacco and caffeinated drinks will be affecting you. Just because you had low appetite or poor sleep before, doesnt mean they're not contributing now FFS!
You're at much higher risk of stroke, heart disease, complications of infections like pneumonia,.... does your DS have another adult in his life to take care of him in the event you're hospitalised or worse? And he will getting all those toxins from your breath and clothes from the smoking :-(

But yes, cutting down the coffee and cigarettes will improve your sleep and appetite, so you can gain weight, and look better.

Edited

I'm not bothered about looking good, that shit doesn't bother me. Most would say I look good now but I just hate how I look and feel about it. Wanting to go up a couple of dress sizes is hardly the height of vanity🙄

Weirdly when I had a full blood workup everything was rock bottom except for the b12 and calcium which was apparently too high. GP didn't seem concerned about it

If you have had a thyroid issue you should be getting bloods quite frequently - when was your last one? Everything being rock bottom doesn't sound good at all and if your GP isn't concerned I would move. Ask your friends which local practices are doing well for them. Female GP's tend to understand the thyroid and B12 issues better than males as it is a predominantly female issue and sadly men don't pay much attention to it - I'll guess they've put you on antidepressants rather than looking into any issues in depth.

No, it isn't. Nothing wrong at all with wanting to look a certain way. But you won't listen to all the pps telling you that heavy smoking and caffeine will be reducing your appetite and affecting your sleep, and it's just baffling to me that someone with such an unhealthy lifestyle would focus on dress size rather than the glaringly obvious priority issues

Taking the caffeine element away as that’s already been well covered, if you’re drinking as much teams coffee as you say, you’re filling yourself with liquid so will be killing off your feelings of hunger. A big drink of water before eating is the oldest dieter’s trick in the book, but it’s working against you as you don’t want or need to lose weight

Haven't had bloods for about 6 months now. And Dr just told me to buy vitamins. So I take vitamin c, d, e, cod liver oil, iron, folic, calcium, magnesium and zinc avoided the b12 because of them being too high. Maybe seeing a female doctor would make the difference because I actually went to them in the first place because of periods being all over the place. Being 39 I wondered if peri was a possibility

You need to go back to your GP and get bloods done again. Be honest about your smoking/ caffeine intake and the OTC supplements. High calcium and high B12 need looking at urgently.

Why are you taking OTC calcium? You say your blood test showed it was too high!

Out of interest, what did you want from this thread Devilsmommy? Because I am beginning to think you are not going to listen to any of the advice you have asked for.

Full fat dairy is your friend. Buy double cream and add it to mash, sauces, omelettes, quiches, custard, anything you can think of. Use plenty of butter in everything, and spread it thickly on toast, crumpets etc. Have full fat milk in everything.

Stop smoking - or at least cut down. Do some exercise. Then you’ll get an appetite. Eat peanut butter and chocolate spread.

I know a couple of heavy smokers, both have tiny appetites so I agree with this.

Kuretake · 03/11/2025 10:07

I am not sure if you're genuine but assuming you are, my husband struggles to remain in the healthy BMI range and he's managed to get his weight to a reasonable place now. He does a bulk protein shake mid morning, oatcakes or toast with peanut or cashew butter mid afternoon and usually a bowl of branflakes with full cream milk in the evening. On top of three normal meals a day obviously! He treats the snacks like an obligation and eats them regardless of whether he's particularly hungry.

Sorry the calcium levels were rock bottom, the b12 was through the roof. I wanted ideas of foods that were good for packing on the weight. I know smoking is bad and I drink too much caffeine but that's my lifestyle choice. Just wanted food ideas. And I was completely honest with the doctor about how much I smoke and how much caffeine I drink. Obviously he told me to cut down/quit and drink decaff

Go to the weight loss threads and see what they need to avoid.

Then do the opposite. You're welcome.

I mean well and it was slightly flippant, but it's somewhere to start. Carbs and lots of them seem to be one thing that's verboten so start there! Other high calorie stuff (already mentioned), next, then full fat dairy. I think you have to be consistent and maybe every hour have something carby/high calorie.

I had an illness where I lost a few stone very quickly. I had zero appetite in recovery, had to take fortisip, which I mixed with full fat Greek yogurt, double cream, protein powder, blitzed bananas, berries and avocado, together with milled chia and flaxseed and drank it down a few times a day. It was easier than trying to eat a meal, since the smell of cooking made me nauseous. I made the above mixture in bulk and it did me two full days at a time. It got me through and I slowly regained the weight. Get a blender!

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 03/11/2025 10:29

Almonds, eat as many as you can, your skin will glow from the oil too. Quit smoking.

The problem with the fortisip type drinks is that I'm intolerant to dairy so though I can have cheese and butter I just cc ant have milk and all of those drinks are full fat milk based😅 I have had some recommendations for dairy free ones so hopefully they'll be just as good. I hate cooking and I think having a toddler to cook for who is majorly fussy, possibly has arfid, has just put me off food prep😂

I sometimes need to put weight back on and I buy Complan in the chocolate flavour for extra calories.

PermanentTemporary · 03/11/2025 12:43

I’m just hoping you do something about calcium, as a non exercising dairy intolerant smoker. Sardines on toast?

I do take a high dose calcium supplement since I found out it was so low. Couldn't eat sardines for all the money in the world 🤢 mackerel I could, would that be a good substitute for sardines?

Mate. You’ve been smoking for 24 years and you drink 25-30 cups of tea or coffee a day. And you have a young DC? Putting on weight is the least of your worries. Bluntly, you are heading for an early grave if you don’t quit the fags and caffeine. Your heart must be under intense pressure. Fix those things first and your weight will stabilise in time.

DietQueen2023 · 03/11/2025 12:51

Add Olive oil, Dairy free butter, Dairy free cream to your meals.

2GreatFatSquirrels · 03/11/2025 12:57

My husband is a very slim man. 6ft tall and just 62kg (9st 7lbs). I did manage to get him up to 10.5st last year using the following:

  1. Smoothie with breakfast that includes several tablespoons of almond butter, a banana, whole milk and chia seeds. Plus breakfast of oatmeal made with half oats half quinoa and whole milk.

  2. Snack time - I made oatmeal and raisin cookies with plenty of brown sugar and chopped nuts inside. Also apples and peanut butter.

  3. In the afternoon an Ensure drink packs on another 220cals.

Then normal meals for lunch and dinner and a dessert every day of whole fat yoghurt.

If you want to absolutely pack in the calories? POWDERED MILK! Add it to smoothies, coffees and milkshakes. It’s 40+ cals per tablespoon.

I have actually massively cut down on my smoking and I could easily drop how many drinks I have, I just can't drink decaff though because it leaves a horrible metallic taste in my mouth. I'm already on beta blockers for my heart so am not worried about that as it's being monitored so to speak. I just feel like I'd feel better in myself if I was a bit heavier because being skinny makes me feel uncomfortable. Like feeling the cold so easily and being uncomfortable when sitting/lying down because of the bonyness. I know everyone thinks that I'm being stupid for thinking about these things but if you felt that kind of constant discomfort would you not want to change it too?

Thank you for this. I'd have to switch out the milk for dairy free alternatives but sounds good 😊
