Where did you get your first bra from?

Just had a conversation with MIL about DD needing her first bra.
MIL said, well that's a trip to M&S for you then, that's where everyone gets their first bra.
I said not necessarily. I got my first bra from BHS.
She was like What?! Why did you not go to M&S?

Her visible shock was quite funny.
Thought she was going to say if she'd known this before I married her son, she would not have approved 🤭😂

So, are you a heathen like me or did you actually get yours from M&S?

BHS same as you. It had a little bluebird on one cup i remember it well

SushiSheep · 02/11/2025 11:23

I used to wear slips or underskirts from there too.
This was in the 80s.
I don't think they're very commonly worn anymore!

Mine came from Tesco and was popped in the trolley by my dad when he was doing the weekly shop.

It always makes me laugh a bit when I see Mumsnetters talking about going out and getting a fitting with their mum as a rites of passage. Not my experience at all!

BHS for me as well.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 02/11/2025 12:21

BHS I think, it was a very long time ago. It definitely wasn’t M&S.

exhaustedbeinghappy · 02/11/2025 12:28

Me, in the 80s was hand me down from my DSIS (with no consideration as to whether it was the right size!) my DD about 10 years ago was a crop/sports bra bought online after we measured at home. After I showed her how to measure she picked out what she wanted and I ordered for her online - the thought of a proper ‘fitting’ was not appealing to her at all!

SushiSheep · 02/11/2025 12:49

@BauhausOfEliott I went with my older sister!
Glad to see quite a few of us went to BHS.

It was a secondhand one but good condition and fitted well. Berlie I think it was used to do bras for teenagers would have been early 70,s

EleanorReally · 02/11/2025 12:55

a local shop in the high street, i think, hard to know, since i was only about 12 or 13

blackwhitepink · 02/11/2025 12:56

Littlewoods. I don’t think I was measured. I never took my girls to M&S to get fitted either, we did home measurements and tried a few options

Coconutter24 · 02/11/2025 12:57

I think my mum got me one from BHS. However my DDs now wear M&S ones.

DickDewey · 02/11/2025 12:58

My mum bought me 4 identical ‘teen bras’ from M&S. I remember them vividly.

thecatfromneptune · 02/11/2025 12:59

John Lewis (mum liked to go posh!) Before then I had cotton camisoles from M&S; but I vividly remember going to a fitting room in John Lewis aged about 14 and having a middle aged lady measure me for my first proper underwired bra.

I loved that bra, it was a really soft cream modal-style fabric; but in later years I found out that she had measured me entirely wrong, and far from being a 34B, I was actually a 32D.

No wonder none of my bras fit properly until I was nearly 30!

CoffeeAndCakeBringMeJoy · 02/11/2025 13:02

Tammy Girl - it was absolutely tiny, and a glorified crop top, but I felt so very proud to wear it. Looking back I don’t think I really needed it, a crop top would have been fine at that stage, but it meant so much to have it. From there, ended up at M&S, but my DM measured me at home as I didn’t fancy being measured at the shop.

hexsnidgett · 02/11/2025 13:02

Mine was from Marks, it had a little heart on one cup. I was about fourteen and measured myself. Probably badly.

Glad you said that - mine was hand-me-down from my cousin! She was cool though and I really looked up to her. My mum left two in a bag in my bedroom, kept trying them on - it was a case of, when it fits it fits 😂

Onefortheroad25 · 02/11/2025 13:05

Mine were from Penneys. I’d say I was 11 or 12. I remember being really embarrassed asking my mother could I get some. I don’t know why because she was pretty good with stuff like that. I don’t think I even needed a bra but my friends had them so I wanted to keep up!
I brought my own 2 dd’s to M&S initially but then they just started picking up their own in Penneys themselves.

Tralalalama · 02/11/2025 13:06

Tammy girl. It was tiny and lacy! 28AA!!!!
but I loved it and everything it signified to me. Definitely didn’t actually need a bra until 15

SushiSheep · 02/11/2025 13:10

Haha @Tralalalama 28AA here too, very much doubt I actually needed one but as you say it meant everything!
Felt so grown up.

i remember i had two, a pink and a blue gingham one
first year of senior school, very embarrassed.

Shinyandnew1 · 02/11/2025 13:53

Tammy Girl for me! It was beautiful-pink and lacy!

Ilovepastafortea · 02/11/2025 14:02

1973 I was 12, maybe closer to 13. Hand-me-downs were common and, along with some other clothes, I had been given a cheesecloth top that tied under the boobs that my older cousin had grown out of. This was the height of fashion in 1973! I pointed out to my mum that I couldn't wear it without anything underneath, neither could I wear it with a vest. So she went shopping & came back with a size 29AA bra from M&S. I hardly filled it, but felt so grown up wearing a bra under my trendy top with my flared high waisted jeans.....let's forget that I had to wear the outfit with my sensible Clarks school shoes or 'daps' (black plimsoles with a bit of elastic on the top from Woolworths) because mum absolutely refused to buy me a pair of platformed shoes. 😉

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/11/2025 14:07

John Lewis. I needed a bra but at 12 or 13 had to be told I needed one, my flat chested mother wore Wonderbras and didn't like spending money but had to with this bra.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 02/11/2025 14:08

From a proper corsetry shop. I had two ‘starter’ bras from Berlei. Lilac and white check and very soft in a size 30AA.

Blanketfull · 02/11/2025 14:10

I did get my first (2) from M&S, then Mum decided to get me a third from BHS, one on, one in the wash, one clean...

The BHS one was horrible and scratchy!
