Where did you get your first bra from?

Just had a conversation with MIL about DD needing her first bra.
MIL said, well that's a trip to M&S for you then, that's where everyone gets their first bra.
I said not necessarily. I got my first bra from BHS.
She was like What?! Why did you not go to M&S?

Her visible shock was quite funny.
Thought she was going to say if she'd known this before I married her son, she would not have approved 🤭😂

So, are you a heathen like me or did you actually get yours from M&S?

Whatever catalogue my Mother had in 1990's and she guessed the size 🙄.

Didn't get my size properly measured until I was earning my own money at 16 and able to travel to the nearest city on the bus and get measured in M&S.

My mother had been buying me 36B and I measured in at 32DD 🙈.

A department store in the early 1980s, I can’t recall which. My mum took me and I was so excited at the time.

SushiSheep · 02/11/2025 18:53

The Double A cuppers, did you ever do the breast increasing exercise as outlined in Judy Blume's 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret'
"I must, I must, I must increase my bust " 😂

@Pollqueen Bloody hell, talk about brutal! 😳

Mine was from Debenhams

JellyBabiesmunch · 02/11/2025 19:09

My mother took me to get mine. It was unwearable as very scratchy and uncomfortable. I only had one for years. What did I do when it was in the wash?

BlueScrunchies · 02/11/2025 19:38

Index Catalogue! DM paid in instalments for my wonderbra.

TragicMuse · 02/11/2025 19:44

I found one in the airing cupboard! It was brown. And a halter neck.

All told, not a great first bra experience. I don’t remember what came next but it was probably from the local haberdashery/undies shop.

This was late 70s, before M&S became the knicker-purveyor to all.

M&S don’t know how to measure though!! They’re sizing is atrocious and are the main cause of most women wearing the wrong size bras!

Absolutely agree! They have no idea how to fit!

Contessa

Hand me down from my sisters friend - AA cup, with a little padding, front fastening, from Ladybird. 1973 or 1974 I think.

Bpught one from Liitlewoods, couldn’t fill it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Different times now 😂

Ethel Austin in the precinct. Two pale pink triangles with cream around the edges and straps. Size S. Matching knicks. I was 14, a bit of a late developer.

Omg I swear this is my exact same experience! Same bra from an Ethel Austin store in the precinct. I was 11 at the time!

scaredfriend · 02/11/2025 20:00

Tammy Girl c. 1992 for me!

Jamandtoastfortea · 02/11/2025 20:00

Fancy department store, with an “efficient” lady doing the fitting!. It was triumph in brand. Shop doesn’t exist anymore, so my eldest daughter got hers from M&S!

Also Ethel Austin! It was a white slighty padded 28AA

BHS, it had a little butterfly inbetween the tiny cups.

I had the same, as did most of the girls in my school year.

I miss BHS.
It had the best lighting department.

I've never heard of Ethel Austin, I wonder if it was regional.

Ethel Austin, it was white broderie Anglais is with a rosebud in the middle, size 30AA. I bought my first underwired bra myself from BHS, it was also slightly padded. I loved that bra

Lougle · 02/11/2025 20:34

I was a tall but very skinny teenager. So skinny that my mother could never get me school skirts that fitted because the rules prohibited long a-line skirts and the knee length skirts were up by my thighs if they were slim enough. There was just one style of skirt that had elasticated adjustment and that was a-line.

I went to M&S for my first bra. It was excruciatingly embarrassing. The lady measured me, yelled across to her colleague and said 'I don't think we've got anything that small have we Gladys?' 'Oooh no, we don't go that small at all....'

I think I walked out with a 32A bra when I was actually something like a 24 underbust. I had a 23.5" waist when I got married!

BoarBrush · 02/11/2025 20:43

I bought my first proper bra from m&co from my paper round money, my mum had bought me bralettes but never bras. I never understood it until my 2nd dd, I had to corner her a few months ago armed with the tape measure to measure her as she was not interested beforehand.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/11/2025 20:56

M&S - it had little lilac flowers embroidered on it. Paid for it myself - my DM never bought me anything. 🙁

In an open air market in Hong Kong. My mother lifted my top up in full view of the whole street and put the cups against my chest to gauge my size. I was about 13. Mortifying

It sound it!

There used to be an Ethel Austin in our town in northern England, but it closed about 20 years ago.

DiscoBob · 02/11/2025 22:16

I think it must have been m&s. Thirty two double a. Pretty pointless but I was chuffed! Other early bras were from c&a, knickerbox and BHS.
