Where did you get your first bra from?

Just had a conversation with MIL about DD needing her first bra.
MIL said, well that's a trip to M&S for you then, that's where everyone gets their first bra.
I said not necessarily. I got my first bra from BHS.
She was like What?! Why did you not go to M&S?

Her visible shock was quite funny.
Thought she was going to say if she'd known this before I married her son, she would not have approved 🤭😂

So, are you a heathen like me or did you actually get yours from M&S?

A two-pack of white cotton bras in a box, from the outfitters on the town high street where we also got school PE kit.

Slipped among my Christmas presents one year. Which I found deathly embarrassing and I don’t know what my mother was thinking of; she was so good about all other ‘growing up’ stuff.

Similar, but mine was a birthday present. Thankfully dad had gone to work when I opened my presents, but my younger sister found it amusing. Mum wasn't good with any of the 'growing up' stuff.

probably said this before but bra shop in the midlands where the “lady” was rude and said “hardly anything there” never stopped feeling stupid about my “breasts” since

My Mum took me to Allenton market and guessed my size. She announced, "she needs a bra, you wouldn't think it under that (coat). Charming

BHS it had a butterfly between the cups, 28aa, I loved it

I got mine from Etam (Tammy Girl).
I brought both my DD’s their first bra’s from M&S - great choice, the t shirt bras are exceptionally good and value for money, 2 for £12.

I think DM got me my first bra, I don’t know where from. It was a Berlei, which seemed to be what most girls in the early 70s started with - choice of pink or blue pattern.

Incidentally re the BHS love on this thread - DH has been looking for some new lamps for the bedroom, the physical shops he went to were useless so he looked online and discovered the BHS lighting department still exists there.

M&S in the early 90s. Like your MiL, I don’t think it would have occurred to my mum to go anywhere else!

Adventing · 04/11/2025 17:47

I can't remember for sure but I think it was probably M&S.

Haberdashery in our village. 32b I think.

I don't remember when I got my first bra or where it came from. I think I must have been measured for one at some point, I remember my first size being a 28AA so I must have been about 11/12ish.

My daughter is 14 and is adamant she doesn't want a bra, there is no way in hell she would let me measure her, let alone a stranger! She is happy enough in crop tops for now and they are from M&S!

SliceofTosst · 04/11/2025 18:00

BHS I think. A hefty 28AA. Felt so grown up.

I wish those crop tops had been an option when I was growing up.
Mum guessed my size for my first bras for my 12th birthday.
A couple of years later Mum and Nan insisted I needed to be measured, which I hated. My sister, who's a couple of years younger came to come too, but was disappointed when when the fitter said the 28AA bras passed down from me still fitted ok.
