Where did you get your first bra from?

Just had a conversation with MIL about DD needing her first bra.
MIL said, well that's a trip to M&S for you then, that's where everyone gets their first bra.
I said not necessarily. I got my first bra from BHS.
She was like What?! Why did you not go to M&S?

Her visible shock was quite funny.
Thought she was going to say if she'd known this before I married her son, she would not have approved 🤭😂

So, are you a heathen like me or did you actually get yours from M&S?

BHS, it had a little butterfly inbetween the tiny cups.

CaptainCallisto · 02/11/2025 14:18

It was Contessa for me, I think. I had blue and white gingham to go under my school summer dress in Y6. I was the first in my class to need one and I was mortified! Everyone else was in little crop tops and I had a proper underwired, B cup bra!

YorkieTheRabbit · 02/11/2025 14:19

My stepmum got it from the Grattan catalogue, early 80’s. It was actually a pack of two, one white the other was a strange beige brown colour, sort of American tan Confused.
She didn’t measure me but it seemed ok. I’m 58 and I’ve never had a bra fitting.

My first bra come from a small independent bra shop.

TroysMammy · 02/11/2025 14:21

I think it was from a catalogue sold as a trainer bra. It was little more than a stretchy bandage.

TroysMammy · 02/11/2025 14:23

I was tiny I think it was a 24 or 26AA

LividArse · 02/11/2025 14:24

Tammy Girl.

32AA.

I have no idea. Definitely not M&S as we didn't live near one. Probably Dunnes Stores as is only place in our wee town in the late 80s that would have sold bras. Maybe Wellworths. Or mums 'Club book'. Great Universal or the like. God, she loved that club book.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 02/11/2025 14:27

DD and I have had bra fittings in M&S as adults. Can't say we were ever convinced in their accuracy.

JBJ · 02/11/2025 14:31

BHS for me, late 80’s/early 90’s I think. No measuring took place, just my mum holding them up to me and guessing!

purpleme12 · 02/11/2025 14:33

I can quite honestly say I've got no clue where I got my first bra from! 😆😆

SweetBaklava · 02/11/2025 14:36

Hand-me-downs from my cousin, 28A 😆 Christ is only I was that size now… 34E these days! Took my DD at 13 to John Lewis where we both had terrible fittings, so we went to M&S next where I took charge of both our fittings myself instead!!!

SeaAndStars · 02/11/2025 14:47

My mum bought mine at a Pippa Dee party.

This thread is making me realise how much I miss BHS. I used to get all my towels, lamps, lampshade and a million other things from there. It seemed cheap and basic but I'm sure the quality was much better than most things you can buy now.

Blarghism · 02/11/2025 14:48

M&S, my mum was a bit of an underwear snob and BHS would not have been acceptable. Did they even have a proper fitting service?

sonjadog · 02/11/2025 14:50

It was a very long time ago, but most likely BHS in Belfast. I also got my first toaster from there.

QueenVanSeahorse · 02/11/2025 14:52

Heelas

Minniliscious · 02/11/2025 14:53

I also went to Tammy Girl! 28 AA crop top bra 😂

MorningFresh · 02/11/2025 14:55

Ethel Austin in the precinct. Two pale pink triangles with cream around the edges and straps. Size S. Matching knicks. I was 14, a bit of a late developer.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/11/2025 14:57

I remember it well. DH Evans children's department. Berlei, one with pink flpwers and the other with blue. 28AA and I didn't need it and it was years before I filled it out but when I went to high school lots of the other girls had bras and I didn't want to be babyish in a vest. I was about 11 and a half.

Later I had BHS ones. In those days I don't think M&S did teen bras. 1971.

niclw · 02/11/2025 14:59

Tammy Girl for me too. I don’t recall the size but I remember being very embarrassed as none of my friends had one yet.

Pollqueen · 02/11/2025 15:02

In an open air market in Hong Kong. My mother lifted my top up in full view of the whole street and put the cups against my chest to gauge my size. I was about 13. Mortifying

sausagesandwiches · 02/11/2025 15:03

I got mine from Ethel Austin’s which I believe only existed in the north west

I got my girls theirs from Asda

I didn’t have M&S money for something they would grow out of in a few months

I got the softest jersey bedding in there and got my mum a dressing gown for Christmas.

Used to get off the bus at In Shops and walk up to BHS for a hoagie. Mostly because we were tickled by the word hoagie. Miss BHS.

I think about it every time I walk past where it used to be.

Tammy Girl for me too…all 28AA of it 😁
