Where did you get your first bra from?

Just had a conversation with MIL about DD needing her first bra.
MIL said, well that's a trip to M&S for you then, that's where everyone gets their first bra.
I said not necessarily. I got my first bra from BHS.
She was like What?! Why did you not go to M&S?

Her visible shock was quite funny.
Thought she was going to say if she'd known this before I married her son, she would not have approved 🤭😂

So, are you a heathen like me or did you actually get yours from M&S?

Tammy Girl for me too…all 28AA of it 😁

Same as me- egg cup!

taxguru · 02/11/2025 15:28

M&S - a "light control" front fastener. I carried on wearing the same style for years until they stopped selling them around 1990 - just got slightly bigger sizes as I grew. Never found a bra equally comfortable in all the years since.

A two-pack of white cotton bras in a box, from the outfitters on the town high street where we also got school PE kit.

Slipped among my Christmas presents one year. Which I found deathly embarrassing and I don’t know what my mother was thinking of; she was so good about all other ‘growing up’ stuff.

HungreeHipp0 · 02/11/2025 15:30

My first bra was a hand me down from our neighbour's daughter who was a few years older than me. It was a once-white very overstretched 36A. That thing would still be too big for me now. I think it was another year before mum took me to be fitted and it was M&S.

TomatoSandwiches · 02/11/2025 15:32

Tammy girl, it was a set of 3, pearlised white, baby pink and baby blue with stiched hearts on the top rim of the cups.

Olderbutt · 02/11/2025 15:33

Dorothy Perkins.....it was the only place to get one in our town before it was redeveloped in the late 1960's!

HoobleDooble · 02/11/2025 15:35

Littlewoods on a Saturday morning with most of the family in tow, didn’t get fitted as I’d been made to try one of my mum’s on at home and she guessed my size from how hers fitted on me.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/11/2025 15:37

BHS - but my mum just bought them for me. She must have guessed my size unless she bought a couple for me to try. I was about 12 and probably didn’t need it but the other girls had started wearing them so asked mum if I could have one.

BertieBotts · 02/11/2025 15:42

I think I did go to M&S but they said I was too small and didn't need one Grin

Under the +4 inches measurement system I came out as a minus cup size for years and years, it was most disappointing.

I think I ended up getting something ridiculous like a 28AA from George at Asda.

sheistheslayer · 02/11/2025 15:46

Tammy girl I think then bravissimo

Changename12 · 02/11/2025 15:50

Woolworths

sanityisamyth · 02/11/2025 16:43

I’d avoid going to M&S at all costs for a bra. Especially a first one!!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 02/11/2025 16:44

BHS. It had a little polka dot trim.

MugofteaandWordle · 02/11/2025 16:48

Jarrolds (Norwich store) I was in my last year of middle school and a 32C - I've been blessed in the boobage department ever since.

I took my daughter to M&S for her first bras purely because I knew they carried smaller sizes.

Blingismything · 02/11/2025 16:52

From a small family owned department store. A Berlei first bra, it came in a white box.

DramaAlpaca · 02/11/2025 16:53

My DM took me to the lingerie section of our local department store when I was about 13, in 1977. It felt very grown up, but I remember being a bit embarrassed about getting measured by a middle aged lady.

BexThree · 02/11/2025 17:03

I can't remember whether it was BHS or Littlewoods, but it wasn't really a 'rite of passage' thing.
Mum had taken me shopping for my new school uniform just before I started at High School. After we had bought everything on the list, mum asked me whether I would like to try on some bras, rather than buy some more of the little cropped vests I'd been wearing up until then. After trying a few on mum bought me a few of the ones that seemed to fit best.

My DD's first ones were from Matalan the summer before last. When I first asked whether she wanted some she said her crop-top bralettes were still OK, but changed her mind when she found out that a couple of her friends had switched to bras.
The M&S in our town closed several years ago.

bugalugs45 · 02/11/2025 17:08

John Lewis in Oxford street London ( we don’t live in London ) , but my mum took me there , circa 1990 .
I was terrified being pulled about by a very large intimidating lady 🤣

TheCurious0range · 02/11/2025 17:09

M&s because my uncle's then girlfriend worked there and got a staff discount

FullOfMomsense · 02/11/2025 17:11

M&S is just the place to go, i didn't get my first bra from there but it's a rite of passage if you need to be measured and helped.

RedRiverShore5 · 02/11/2025 17:13

A shop in the local high street in about 1970

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/11/2025 17:13

Local independent bra shop for my first actual bra.

Prior to that I'd worn bralet type things.

I remember them vividly, a couple of boring plain white jersey bras, but on the sale rail was a blue one printed to look like denim, I loved it, and wore it until it fell to pieces!

Tillow4ever · 02/11/2025 17:18

Mine was from a little shop in Mablethorpe - definitely not a chain store or somewhere posh either!

M&S don’t know how to measure though!! They’re sizing is atrocious and are the main cause of most women wearing the wrong size bras!
