A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

So, basically, the moral of the story is, don't work hard as we'll whip your arse and it will hurt like hell. Be a sponger and we'll feather your nest for life. What could possibly go wrong? 😱

Yes, I thought it was great, actually. I hope we get more of this. I'm not sure how you get cut through with all the drama of reform and chaos of Labour mopping up all the column inches, but it was absurdly reassuring to hear someone speaking sense about the importance of work and business for national wellbeing.

Even some of those journalists must be getting the issues. For their dc too.

Even the ones with briefing notes, she was great in that too. Every question.

I can't even listen tbh.

Bingo for the following:
Strong foundations
Broadest shoulders
Fairness
Equality
Tough decisions
Working people

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

I'm watching it on catchup. Bingo! all of them in the first 4 minutes.😂😡

This morning’s address by the chancellor was an “odd speech”, argues economist Paul Johnson, the former head of the Institute for Fiscal Studies thinktank.

Johnson, now Provost of The Queen’s College, Oxford, posted on X:

In one sense fair enough to blame last government for problems. But wrong to pretend all utterly unexpected and couldn’t possibly have been predicted at election or budget last year. We knew the risks when tax promises were made. And so did she.

upseedaisee · 04/11/2025 11:15

I stopped. Couldn't face more of her lies and obfusaction. I really don't know how she can stand there and say it.
Basically, we're fcked. Think I covered it.

I remember listening to Paul Johnson on TRIM before last years election and he was pretty sick with all the parties sticking their heads in the sand about the state of the economy and the need for spending cuts and tax rises. He said that he would be very angry with whoever won if they turned round after the election and claimed they didn’t know things were this bad….

On a lighter topic, someone on an earlier thread posted a link to a female artist/designer who has cute little drawings of animals and country themes. The website sells mugs, cards, stuffed toys etc. If anyone knows the link, please do share again. I need to buy a gift, and she would be perfect.

A snippet from a piece in the Mail.

In a blatant softening up exercise ahead of her announcements on November 26, Ms Reeves said there is a 'clear choice' between 'investment and hope, or cuts and division'. Ominously signposting broad tax assault, she warned that 'we will all have to contribute' to getting the country back on track.
'These are important choices that will shape the future of our country for years to come,' she said.

  1. How about she just cuts spending (what's that got to do with division?)
  2. WTF is there left to invest in?

3)Oh yes, they'll shape the future of this country alright. It's toilet shaped.

I’m glad I didn’t waste my time on any of it.

Kemi has being right on her side so it’s an easier gig.

Starmer and Reeves have given up.

On another lighter note. I went to see my (new to me) flat today. The decorator has finally been able to get in after the debacle that was the bathroom. He should have finished by now. Looking forward to the end of the week when it's finished. Tomorrow carpet hunting!

she said
’we will ALL have to contribute’
All = everyone

So her speech means there will be welfare cuts ?

She mentioned ‘equal’

So everyone will be treated equally
No Higher rate taxes for some, everyone will be affected the same
No wealth taxes or council tax hikes for just some as …everyone will be equal

That would be a first for Labour
Or are we again listening to a bunch of lies
I think we all know on this thread

All except welfare recipients I suspect.

Thats exciting!!! Whst colour are you going with?

Rivalled · 04/11/2025 11:45

Mentioning equal surely means all of the tax changes aimed at making CGT ‘equal’ income tax, partnerships etc are likely coming in. I’m sure people already paying tonnes of tax are about to be told that they’re still not paying their fair share!

EasternStandard · 04/11/2025 11:51

It’s interesting some of the solid Starmerites would be happy to throw Reeves under the bus to save his skin. If they could that is.

I actually appreciate the markets for tying those two together like sinking stones. If only we didn’t get taken along for the same ride.

Boohoo76 · 04/11/2025 11:58

Some of the other threads are wild out there…apparently I should sell my band G mansion that’s not actually a mansion - who the fuck is going to buy it? My job is no more stressful that someone who is working as a barista. And I should have a comfortable life living on £50k even though my mortgage is £3k per month…

I went with colours fom the Crown range. Linen Blend (soft brown) for the lounge, Powder blue for the bedroom, Always Orchid (mauve) for the bathroom and Salt Spray (grey) for the hall. The kitchen needs work so I'll do it at a later date.
If all goes according to plan I'll be in around the 21st.

Yet another Labour stuff-up. Good on him.

She'll have to do something as Labour bottled out of cutting the benefits expenditure. So it will be taxpayers to fill the gap. I don't think any government will resolve the benefit culture in the UK. The work ethic has been lost.

Just checking two kids homes omg both band G.

First one eight years ago was a doer upper been on the market for a couple of years. They've saved up and done most of the work themselves.

Second house been on the market since 2021. They've just bought it. Been reduced over the years by over 30%. Kitchen from the 70s. Ditto pink bathroom. They've years of work ahead of them just insulating, new floors to cure rising damp. Central heating, etc.

To arbitrarily double their rates is just madness. They're not mansions, they're not valued at a high price. 15.2k council tax between them.

What's the point of trying anymore.

Painful and so unfair.

There really will be profound consequences from what Reeves is planning to do.

If she doesn't do anything to reel in the benefits culture, Powell's "rivers of blood" could become a metaphorical reality. The public mood is ugly enough already; I dread to think what'll be like after the upcoming Budget.
