A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Civil service bosses have told MPs that Lord Mandelson, who was sacked as UK ambassador to the US due to close links with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, was never formally interviewed for the job.

The head of the civil service, Sir Chris Wormald, said there was no interview because Lord Mandelson was directly appointed to the role.

MPs heard that process meant Lord Mandelson was not directly asked about any conflict of interest with interviewers in person, but instead needed to fill in a form aimed more at potential financial conflicts.

Sir Chris said this process has been changed since Lord Mandelson's exit, to ensure a formal, minuted interview happens.

Thanks, I was just searching for something about today's committee grilling.
So he filled in a form and that was it? Fucking joke.
I hope the committee asked why they were seemingly unaware about the identity of Mandy's best pal. His well known chequered past was laid out in detail by David Davies in the house. Epstein, Russia links, it was all there before he was appointed. Lying tw@ts.

It is a fucking joke - this entire government is.

I hope the whole rotten edifice falls in on them in the coming weeks.

I stopped watching QT years ago. The audiences are always packed with swivel-eyed left-wing political obsessives.

And I never got over my anger at the audience treatment of the US Ambassador the day after - maybe the night of - 9/11. The BBC did apologise for that but it was an absolute disgrace.

Yes, I remember that. I'd been pretty (hard) left in my teens/early twenties and then a massive Tony Blair fan. That QT audience gave me my first "are we the baddies" feeling. Unfortunately the first of many, but the lack of empathy and casual cruelty as the man was in tears in front of a mob of baying, self righteous lefty cunts was a real shock to me. Couldn't believe my lovely left wing would behave like that. I was very naive!

Could someone kindly share an overview of what happened please?

Do these groups vote Reform or are they typically Labour?

The people who feel the poorest in the country are most likely to vote Reform and those who feel the wealthiest are the most likely to vote Labour - but those who are in-between are still more likely to vote Reform, iirc. So basically, Reform - probably off the back of being the default protest party - covers a lot of ground.

I found this today from more in common that kind of highlights the spread of opinions based on the lens through people arrived at the party. It's kind of obvious really but you can see that those who were voting reform in '24 were more conservative in their economic outlook than you might think.

Look at the breadth of opinion on the question of redistribution between the newly arrived Conservative voters and Labour supporters. I'm not sure there is any rhetoric that could marry those two outlooks under one party.

I spent all day doing something that can't have been working because I'm not a working person.

I don't know.

I'm confused. My little non working brain still can't make any sense of this.

Who am I? What was I doing that was the same as in the last few years when I was working, but now is not?

Julen7 · 03/11/2025 19:51

What is happening over on the Labour thread? One of the more bonkers posters there is saying they keep off this thread and we should do the same - in fact we get frequent visitors here don’t we?

All a bit childish I know but I had to post here or I would have posted on there.

God yes they see no problem with lurking and commenting on here frequently. They need to practice what they preach.

Do they think everyone on here supports reform? They seem slightly unhinged if so.

Okay, so you've got the link now, but I remember it well

that lovely US ambassador Philip, and I believe another American journalist called James - not sure if I'd remember that correctly - were basically attacked to the point where I wondered if it was a set up. Like the BBC had Actually looked for people who would simply criticise America. And under those circumstances too.

I didn't watch all of it because I just couldn't. It got discussed a lot in the years afterwards, every workplace I went to remembered how dreadful it was and how shocking it was.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the US Embassy a few times before they moved to that other building. They used to share an interesting selection of films for staff and somebody kept inviting me to them, which was really kind. I did a lot of work in the US at the time. I wonder what it's like now. Looking at the New York mayor elections it feels as if there are now a lot of people living there who hate America. Although. In the US I did get told a lot that people see New York as being very separate.

I haven't been for a few years now, but previously I found they are always really welcoming. Funnily enough, the only place I wasn't keen on was Miami. It didn't feel like America. I can't really explain why.

I was also in California during the first inauguration of Obama as president. I've been to California a few times and I absolutely loved it. I have a feeling it would be very different now.

I don't know if this is just a product of age, but it feels like there was a lot of optimism out there in the world everywhere - and now there isn't.

Also possible that I just feel that way because the world isn't going in the direction I like. Obviously, for a lot of people, it is going in the direction they like!

They mentioned a thread where everyone supports reform. Naturally I was interested, so asked where it was.. no luck so far .. you’d think they be interested in helping wider knowledge of political commentary and debate 🤷‍♀️….

I can’t stomach that tonight (from what you’ve said). I’ll watch it tomorrow morning 🥺

EmeraldRoulette · 03/11/2025 20:07

Okay, I've just looked up the panel and James wasn't there. I must've just met him at the embassy and talked about it. He's very good looking. If anyone could remember his surname, he was on TV a lot. I'm sure he's been on question time.

I swear one of the strangest things about getting older is the sheer amount of life there is behind you. And then you find yourself unable to remember it. I was talking about this to my best friend who is older, and she was saying "it's great that we've done so much stuff". We had this conversation around my birthday when we were in London for a show, and we've been to so many places and done so many things. It is great. We have been very lucky. It just seems really overwhelming sometimes.

Especially as I ultimately turned into a nobody! Sorry that's a whole other thread! 😂 I just don't think I know how to be somebody in the style of world we're in.

Well naturally because if you dont support Labour then you are quite obviously a Reform supporter 🤣🤣
They have lost the plot at this stage.
Just let then live out their deranged little fantasies, they are clearly in the tiny minority at this stage so are basically irrelevant.

They and their opinions are irreverent. Look at any current thread, the majority do not support Labour.

Love that. You have some interesting tales to tell Emerald, and I'm sure you're not a nobody.
I don't know who the good looking American is that you speak of, but after you said that you fancied Matt Goodwin, I have no faith that he'll actually be good looking 🤣🤣.
