A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Fair enough. But I’m far from convinced that Reform will hold its nerve to cut back welfare when it comes to it. A party that thrives on disaffection among the white working class ‘left behinds’ is not well placed to put downward pressure on payments for the unemployed or for PIP.

And, TBH, I think the state pension will need to be re-examined.

Yes, the state pension is a political hot potato and Farage steered clear of addressing it. From an uninformed perspective, if there's any downward tinkering with private pensions by Labour in the upcoming Budget I think it'll be hard for them to put the case for the abolition of the triple lock.

Labour Wales has suddenly shunted eye ops over to England. in the last month two friends have had appointments for surgery across the border.

CruCru · 03/11/2025 14:10

There’s a thing in the Times: “Rachel Reeves is considering more than 100 separate tax and spending measures in the upcoming budget”. This is terrifying - the budget is in three weeks. By now she should broadly know what she wants to do and this stage is for polishing it up.

There’s also some stuff from Heidi Alexander on what a “working person” is.

I know this is a very American saying, but A rising tide lifts all the ships.

Labour just can't see that.

In other news, I am not a Trump fan, but I try to be fair minded. What the BBC news did is terrible.

100%

They really only have themselves to blame - the knives have been out for the BBC for a while.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/11/2025 17:03

@EmpressoftheMundane I don't trust any news outlets, but even I'm shocked by that!

EasternStandard · 03/11/2025 17:09

That is really bad.

DancingFerret · 03/11/2025 17:20

I'd like to say I'm shocked at the BBC, but I'm not. Its programmes are so obviously biased I rarely listen to (or watch) it these days.

upseedaisee · 03/11/2025 17:21

Oh god, what is this country coming to. How many times do we have to mention poor old George Orwell? What an oracle he's turned out to be.

Do these groups vote Reform or are they typically Labour?

BBC Question Time was in our town recently I recorded it to watch. Well the panel were augmented with cranks. The audience left of Putin. This in a conservative stronghold where a donkey wearing a blue rosette would get voted in. It was a shambles and irrelevant to the issues in the area.
Unwatchable.

I stopped watching QT years ago. The audiences are always packed with swivel-eyed left-wing political obsessives.

And I never got over my anger at the audience treatment of the US Ambassador the day after - maybe the night of - 9/11. The BBC did apologise for that but it was an absolute disgrace.

A depressing, but not improbable, essay by Richard Littlejohn in the DM about what happens after KS and RR are removed by their own party (something which appears increasingly likely).

Evening 😁
God what a day that was. I'm frazzled 🥴. Strange considering I'm not a 'working person'. I am enjoying telling everyone I know about the new definition of 'working people'. It is usually met with lots of expletives.

@DancingFerret I missed Farage's speech, but I'm impressed with the read out. Its good to hear emphasis on SMEs. Its shameful what Labour have done, particularly to smaller businesses. I'm also pleased that he mentioned IR35s. I hope robbing Rachel was taking notes.
According to Sam Coates, there were some impressive business leaders in audience.

I'm disgusted, but not surprised by the latest BBC story. They have no credibility left at this point.

Evening!

Another day at the grindstone done (not working, obvs, but deffo charging my time out in 6 minute chunks, as per my target...kinda like working but not! 🤷‍♀️🙄).

I'm actually looking for a new role right now, to try to get a decent rise to mitigate mooted taxation.

I've not seen any Farage stuff today as I haven't had a break (my break was spent chatting with a potential employer). I'll look now.

Rivalled · 03/11/2025 19:10

Is it only Monday? I’ve been at the gym sipping cappuccinos in my daydreams clearly!

Thanks, I read the article, and if it turns out to be accurate, the UK will quickly be heading for civil unrest.

That’s my conclusion, anyway.

Its tiring this not 'working' business isn't it? It takes all day too. It took me 11 hours to not work today. 😂
Good luck job hunting for another not 'working' position.

Civil service bosses have told MPs that Lord Mandelson, who was sacked as UK ambassador to the US due to close links with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, was never formally interviewed for the job.

The head of the civil service, Sir Chris Wormald, said there was no interview because Lord Mandelson was directly appointed to the role.

MPs heard that process meant Lord Mandelson was not directly asked about any conflict of interest with interviewers in person, but instead needed to fill in a form aimed more at potential financial conflicts.

Sir Chris said this process has been changed since Lord Mandelson's exit, to ensure a formal, minuted interview happens.

Exhausting. It's a bit wank really, as I always envisioned not working as being slightly more fun than it's turned out to be. #sadtimes

I spent all day doing something that can't have been working because I'm not a working person.

Was it also rather shit, considering that not working should be fun?
