A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes or course Starmer lied. That's what he does. She must be fuming at how she was treated compared to others, rightly so.
I will politely disagree with you though on LH's suitability for office. Smile

Oh, I’m not arguing Haigh’s suitability for office. Starmer should have blocked her, since he knew about the conviction. He didn’t though. And he wouldn’t stand behind his decision.

It’s Starmer’s cowardice and the bad blood it’s created that’s the story here. I would guess that Haigh’s got lots of supporters on the Labour backbenches. This will erupt in time.

I’m in London, it’s mostly red. It feels like the last area standing. Although maybe it will change a bit next GE.

I agree with you all re Kemi. I might hand over some dosh too.

You might be in the last remaining Labour stronghold after the next GE, if the MRP is accurate.
Lucky you 😂

Yes I think you're right. She doesn't shy away from interviews, and she speaks like a woman scorned.
The knives will come out for Starmer in time I think. See also Lucy Powell.

Same here. This ward went blue for the first time in years in 2017. Unfortunately it went red again last year. I think it could have been a very close run thing if Reform had not had a candidate here. Unless something spectacular happens, I'll have to vote Reform next time to keep Labour out. Thems the breaks.

‘But she wanted to take off the 15 years worth of rent she had paid from the market price. Not really how it works but she was furious when we said no to that.’

Fcking hell. This says it all about some people. Perhaps she was just trying it on. Like the people who offered £100,000 less than the asking price of our old house, which we’d fairly priced according to market value. Yeah ok. Jog on and buy a house you can afford.

Indeed. Powell is gunning for Starmer. Ange too, I’d imagine. And Mandelson. Possibly also Lammy. Starmer’s leaving behind quite a trail of embittered former and demoted ministers and others who’ve been sacked. And all because his judgement is so terrible.

I’ll get it in early: so long Sir Keir, it really wasn’t nice knowing you.

We are going to sell as well. We want to move countries within the next 3 years anyway. So another house off the rental market.

Funnily enough the tenant wanted to buy it. But she wanted to take off the 15 years worth of rent she had paid from the market price. Not really how it works but she was furious when we said no to that.

In the light of your refusal to consider her genius plan do you think she'll go quietly?

That’s quite some list. And you can add the general public 😬

Not quite all members of the general public, judging by the number of apologists for Labour on the "45k+" plus thread. 🙄

No. But the deeply personal and abusive attack she sent us by text wasn't going to make us sell it to her either. Grin

True but it’s becoming a bit weak from the Labour crowd.

Definitely the weaker side on there.

@justasking111 Sorry to hear about the sciatica. Did you have it before or is it maybe your body is readjusting? And also from being restricted in movement after the surgery?

@MantleStatue That's bonkers. I'm sorry for you. I don't understand when the hate for landlords started. Or why. Though this sounds like it's mixed up with a bunch of entitlement as well.

@Parsley4321 I think you might be talking about Hogarth's Gin Alley painting?

EmeraldRoulette · 03/11/2025 10:55

@NoWordForFluffy that's a good point about courts - I hadn't thought of that, I feel stupid now. I suppose my feeling is you should be able to get a bailiff at the end of the two months. Having to go to court for your own property just seemed awful and I thought the waiting lists were really long to get your case heard. Also, that must be incredibly expensive.

It was discussed on an other thread and someone said there is some precedent in the court because somebody sued the local authority for not helping until the tenant was actually. Must be incredibly stressful for the tenant as well. I just feel like it makes no sense and there has to be a better way?

Parsley4321 · 03/11/2025 11:04

@EmeraldRoulette yes !

EmpressoftheMundane · 03/11/2025 11:15

I joined the Conservative party a month ago. I wanted to show support after their conference. I seem to get an email from them now and then. And they sent me a little plastic card with my name on it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can’t help much. I just wanted to be counted in the numbers.

Nolletimiere · 03/11/2025 11:56

NoWordForFluffy · 02/11/2025 19:50

I missed that one. I decided it wasn't worth carrying on once the bot-callers came along!

Public sector productivity fell at its steepest rate in nearly three years as NHS waiting lists dragged on the economy.

Total public service productivity fell by 0.7pc in the three months to June, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It marks the sharpest decline since the final three months of 2022 when the NHS was hit by strikes and lengthy waiting lists in the wake of the pandemic.

The fall in productivity levels comes as the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is expected to downgrade UK productivity, adding to the black hole in public finances.

Edit: Sorry didn’t mean to reply to your old post.

Nolletimiere · 03/11/2025 11:59

The UK economy is “doomed” under the Labour government, the boss of Ryanair has said before this month’s budget, as the airline revealed a jump in first half profits.

Michael O’Leary, the chief executive of the budget airline, hit out at Rachel Reeves, accusing the chancellor of failing to deliver on her programme of economic growth.

“The UK economy under the current leadership is doomed,” he said. “The UK badly needs growth, but the way to deliver growth is through selective tax cuts … you are not going to grow the UK economy by taxing wealth or by taxing air travel.”

I've just listened to Farage giving a speech in the City; were we coming up to a GE, Reform would romp home.

Edited for typo.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/11/2025 12:09

There must be very, very few business leaders prepared to back Labour now. I suppose those in the ‘green’ sector might, but the great majority must be cursing these fools who think that business just magics up money for ever higher tax.

I expect businesses, large and small, will increasingly be sending money and support to the Tories. Reform aren’t going to address the problems of the private business sector.

Farage in his speech did address the issues facing small businesses. What won't win him any votes is his promise to address the ease with which benefits can be claimed atm.

We had 6 BTL always been a good landlord
one tenant after 8 years left £70k of damage re a water leak
one I paid £5k to as going to court would cost £10k no guarantee
one reported me to environmental health for a tile missing in bathroom if she had told me I would of fixed it
one left 59 bags of rubbish despite living 1 min from bin store
we are selling turned all into air babd b and are on the market.
i feel a failure i bought them to provide for my security as I got older however you just can’t do it anymore the laws are ridiculous.
A friend is 82 been landlord forever he has a tenant not paid for 2 years got an eviction after 2 court dates high court baliffs turned up as well as woman from council turned up said tenant has applied for breathing space government initiated and you landlord can do nothing except wait.

Once a date for the bailiffs has been set the courts have already factored in whether a tenant has a right to an extension
Only usually for people with special circumstances. Like disabilities when it’s hard to find alternative accomodation
This is the situation in Herts and this year
Perhaps different areas have different rules but I’m amazed they were given extra time
and once again it takes away more landlord rights

What would have happened had she found another tenant to move in ?

Fair enough. But I’m far from convinced that Reform will hold its nerve to cut back welfare when it comes to it. A party that thrives on disaffection among the white working class ‘left behinds’ is not well placed to put downward pressure on payments for the unemployed or for PIP.

And, TBH, I think the state pension will need to be re-examined.

Think cutting stamp duty on shares is a great idea that urgently needs picking up…

What, the same tenant who tried to claim you needed a licence? Also, where's the 😱 reaction? I suppose it would be used too often.
