A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

We rented put our house a few years ago as we moved for work. It culminated in having to get a court order for eviction and major damage because of course it did.
I can't think of anything more stressful than being a landlord.

Parsley4321 · 03/11/2025 07:39

I have been a landlord for 30 years it’s a total joke now. People used to be decent honourable now the tide has turned we are vilified hence the housing shortage as more landlords leave. 3 years ago Hamptons said 28000 landlords were leaving every month and here we are now rents going up less property available and stress all round

Enforcement of a contract is always through the court system; that's what enforcement is.

In an ideal world, nobody would have to go to court to enforce contracts. But that relies on people acting honourably. It also doesn't help landlords that councils tell tenants not to leave until they're evicted, else they won't help them. It's that aspect of housing law which should be addressed, IMO.

Agreed. That's an easy way thay the state could take some of the risk and uncertainty out of being a landlord, which would increase supply, reduce the need for rents to be higher to cover the risk, and generally make things work better for both landlords and tenants.

But no. Instead they decide to cream extra money off landlords - by forcing them to house tenants for free when it's actually the council's responsibility.

Our welfare state is structurally rotten to the core.

DS was looking at renting his house out when he moves abroad as it's rental value is almost double the monthly morgage. He changed his mind when he read the new draft RRB. Again, the government have come up with this great idea that will kill the private rental market and leave thousands struggling to find a home. So the very people it's supposed to protect will be snookered and of course, the middle section of society is being demonised again, but will in no way affect the companies that have property portfolios the size of Perterborough
If he was going to rent it out now, it would be an airbnb. But he's decided on selling, I think!

Looks good. I might re-join if they keep this up Smile

Funny you say that. On the strength of this letter, and Kemi's last couple of PMQ's I've handed over monies and I'm a fully paid up member again. Now they have to convince me they can win in this ward and they'll have my vote as well as my support. They cam a close third last time, Reform really did split the right vote here.
ETA I might even join the focus group now I'm a laydee of leisure😁

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/11/2025 09:02

On a different matter, I read - likely on this thread - that Louise Haigh claimed on TV to have told Starmer about her fraud conviction before she was made a minister. The only possible outcome of that is that Haigh feels she was thrown under the bus, that Starmer is a spineless unprincipled wanker, and that she’s deeply, deeply resentful.

Haigh won’t be looking for revenge. Oh no.

The understanding at the time was that Starmer’s allies wanted Haigh out, had leaked the information and dropped her in it. Glad the chaos and in-fighting has stopped with this government. 🙄

strawberrybubblegum · 03/11/2025 09:03

The natural economic consequence is that rents go up to cover the risk of damage and non-payment.

That can probably be self-insured by compmies with big rental portfolios, but not smaller landlords.

Does insurance exist which fully covers those costs? It seems that would be a gap for insurance companies to fill... or perhaps a management company could include that insurance inbm their management fee - since active management of non-payment will be important and they may also be managing a big enough portfolio to self-insure that risk.

Obviously, the cost of that insurance has to be added to the rental fee - so good tenants pay for dishonest ones.

SamHain25 · 03/11/2025 09:03

I was talking to a friend yesterday, who is a head teacher of a school in a very deprived area. She told me that one mum takes home more a month than she does. This is not unusual...they claim for everything and anything, and they are proud and open about it. She's fed up and will leave the profession as soon as she can. You can't blame her.

The sleaze and scandal that has emerged since her little faux pas has been unbelievable, yet, apparently they are the party that will clean up politics🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Good for you upsee. Being honest, I quit with a flounce when Kemi was elected. I am really liking her now though, so I may join you.

Being a ladee of leisure sounds bloody lovely this morning. Monday is not being kind! I am questioning my life choices rn. 😂

I've been thinking of joining too. I've never been a member of a political party, and although my values chime most closely to (socially liberal) Conservative I wasn't previously a die-hard: I even voted for Labour and Lib Dems in my distant, innocent past.

But I think Conservatives are the only hope for the UK currently. It feels important, and also that it needs us all to step up and help.

Maybe we can all play our part in a Conservative rebirth after all Smile

I read that too about LH. I think she was on HIGNFY? Although I don't watch it.
There is a clear difference between how she was treated, compared to Tulip Siddiq, Rayner and Mandy. Not that I want a convicted fraudster working with billions of taxpayer cash, but you know what I mean.

Farage is giving a speech later on Reform's economic policies. That may scare us all into joining the tories, even if we can't vote for them.

There’s no consistency whatsoever. Well apart from consistent incompetence, bitterness and misogyny.

To add to your list - Rayner treated differently to Reeves, Rosie Duffield treated terribly by Kier and all of Keir’s loony left buddies. RD’s parting words to Keir Starmer - I’m “ ..so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party".

We have it direct from Kemi plus Laura Trott + Neil O Brien verbally and in writing that Tories will reverse VAT so I'm happy to vote for them but unfortunately I don't think there will be any option other than Reform around here.

I agree generally. But Haigh was given a conditional discharge (I think that’s right), it’s a spent conviction, and no doubt she would express remorse.

It’s a very low level crime well in her past. It was an offence of dishonesty, sure, and I’m certainly not minimising it. But Starmer ok’d the appointment knowing about it, she says, and I believe her.

So the issue is Starmer’s craven self-interest and two-faced conduct. He really is a shit.

Where I live, Labour will always win. It’s pathetic really. Or selfish. Or deluded. I’m not sure. They’re all so painfully be kind it’s idiotic.

Yes or course Starmer lied. That's what he does. She must be fuming at how she was treated compared to others, rightly so.
I will politely disagree with you though on LH's suitability for office. Smile

Same here, it's very sad. Its a wasted vote where I live. Although the recent MRP shows a Reform win here, which would be seismic if they unseat Labour.

I quit when they fiddled the vote to get Rishi in. Not that I had anything against him, he was actually a decent PM. It was the way it was done that did it for me. However, Now the Machiavellian Bradey's gone, we might have a more steady ship.

We are going to sell as well. We want to move countries within the next 3 years anyway. So another house off the rental market.

Funnily enough the tenant wanted to buy it. But she wanted to take off the 15 years worth of rent she had paid from the market price. Not really how it works but she was furious when we said no to that.
