A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

My house is a 30 year old version of that and a lot less polished. On a large housing estate. But it is band G as will be many of the houses on this estate. The problem is the current banding puts houses worth £500k in the same top bands as houses worth £1M plus in my area.

DH and I are coming up to retirement. Our council tax bill is already nearly £4k a year. If it doubles and then increases from there by the time we receive our state pensions then roughly the entirety of one state pension will be needed to pay the council tax.

it will have a disastrous effect on the housing market.

I hope it is just another idea being floated by a think tank which will not materialise.

This is my sons problem paid 300k for a run down house in Wales. Band G. 7k rates is madness

Presumably that would put the council tax at not far off the rental price of that house, if he was renting?

And let's not forget that council tax is paid out of income that was already taxed.

Madness.

Boohoo76 · 02/11/2025 09:08

I have a band G five bed detached new build. It’s not a mansion, I have no swimming pool or tennis court, no acres of land. Why the fuck should my council tax double?

Because you are a class enemy.

Sorry.

I found this article interesting, about the layer upon layer of redistribution and price distortion in the UK now.

www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/e69f87e448c3e72b

At times, the result resembles a sort of cargo-cult where we act out the ritual of a market without the core organising component and then wonder why we aren’t richer

Ironic that the government have instructed the public ‘not to fuel speculation’, with respect the appalling Huntingdon attacks, when they have been doing just that with all the budget rumour and speculation.

A truly two tier government.

This Government's problem is its rapidly-declining credibility which is directly in step with the public's rapidly-declining standard of living. I doubt anyone is listening to their instructions.

The mood on the street was ugly even before they ruined the run-up to Christmas with the delayed Budget. I worry about revolt.

I know what you mean.

I am ready to become an activist - I no longer care if my identity is shown.

I feel that strongly about what Labour are doing.

I hear you. I don’t know how anyone is defending them still.

I see the hardcore left are out with name changes tying themselves in knots over the tragic news. I see these posters are very much in the minority now. Do they really not see that all the whatabouterry and offensive posts are literally pushing people to the likes of Reform. They are actively recruiting for them.

I am genuinely, genuinely worried. I think society is breaking down far faster than I ever thought it would.

And Labour are fuelling the breakdown with their constant divisive rhetoric around "working people" Vs "privilege" and "broadest shoulders" etc.

They are actively choosing to create division and class warfare over cohesion. Vile group of people.

And all the far right enemies talk. They’re stirring up major division.

💯 Then people will be all shocked when people are angry towards disabled people and benefits claimants. Not saying it’s justified but erm…Labour are the ones whipping it up with their divisive rhetoric. The “haves” are getting sick of being displaced and disproportionately squeezed all the while seeing how they MUST fund exponentially rising benefits.

Labour are causing the divide and “hate” all on their own. Same with gangs and bodged inquiries.

I believe so too.

My concern is that Starmer uses it as an excuse to launch an attack on civil liberties.

I truly believe the man is capable of such a thing.

It certainly chimes with what we've seen of his political instincts to control.

That is very worrying.

Digital ID to keep you safe on the commute. I mean, his core voters don’t work, so will probably get through.

It's their deliberate "divide and rule" actions which make me think they're paid puppets of another power.

Their deliberate actions are ruining the economy and people's lives; real politicians would have been reading the room long before now, but these idealogical zealots are sticking to and pursuing the sinister plan they had all along, that much is clear.

They probably believe that are calling the shots, and making 'difficult choices' that the public wouldn't understand to bring about a utopia.

The worst historic abuses have come about in exactly that way.

Absolutely. Because he’s craven and weak, awful combination.

And would rather control than lead.

Yes it's the sign of a shit manager. PM is just a manager. Starmer is a shit manager, unable to lead, so the only tool he has is control

Nolletimiere · 02/11/2025 10:20

Listen carefully to the wording used by the police in the Huntingdon press conference.

It will probably have Starmers grubby touch on it.

strawberrybubblegum · 02/11/2025 10:20

We are living through times which will be taught about in future classrooms, I believe. Everyone will say 'Never Again'. Again.

Nolletimiere · 02/11/2025 10:24

Meanwhile DH and I are due to have a sit
down later to ‘wargame’ budget counter-measures (read, cut our cloth).

What a fucking mess.
