I think quite a few people are tired of the tickbox now though? It's like all the lifestyle shows. You literally can get your bingo card out. Bake Off, Throwdown, Sewing Bee, Strictly. All flavours represented. It's great from a diversity point of view, but it isn't representative of the population as a whole.

It wasn’t so long ago people were proud of diversity and saw globalisation as sophisticated and exciting.

If people get tired, there is a simple solution, don't watch those programs.

Same with adverts, don't watch or don't buy the product if you get tired of diversity.

Same???! If it’s an ad the focus is the product surely and anyone in the ad to me is just a person ! I don’t register skin colour at all in this context ?

I have noticed the change but I welcome it.
I have also noticed that household cleaning products adverts ( flash etc) now seem to feature predominantly male characters and women appear more in car adverts. Its all good. Noticing doesn't make something wrong

It's interesting that you perceive it as "tickbox" - as if these people have nothing to bring to the table other than the colour of their skin. If I stop to think about it for long enough, then I can of course see that the producers have attempted to get a good mix of people on the cast, but I don't fixate on that to the point of becoming "tired" of it. On the contrary, I welcome the diversity. The black and brown people are generally just as interesting to watch as the white people, so I don't really see the issue... they're just people?!

Do people really sit watching these programmes huff puffing about the failure to put more white people on the screen? What miserable little lives those individuals must lead!

The programs mentioned are also very popular, maybe that is what annoys that poster, succesful diversity.

Maybe? I just don't get it tbh. I genuinely can't wrap my head around why this would annoy someone.

GCAcademic · 27/10/2025 09:55

At least we now know why Pochin joined Reform. It must have been genuinely blood-pressure raising for her to be a Conservative party member under a brown leader and with several brown and black Secretaries of State.

Why have you posted this?

What is controversial about posting a MP's comments?

I didn't say it annoys me, I said that it is clear that it annoys some people. I love the shows and have no problem with the diversity.

But.... You cannot be blind to the fact that every panel show, or contest, or lifestyle show, has a drag/ trans, a gay man, a lesbian, a zany older woman, a disabled person, a person of colour etc etc

It's that, that is triggering for those attracted to parties like Reform, who no longer see themselves represented.

The majority of people on those shows are still straight white people,.

Moonmelodies · 27/10/2025 12:51

This Sarah Pochin person must be really looking forward to the Christmas ads.

Maybe for those Reform voters and people who count black and brown faces.

I am not sure what point you are making?

What does that even mean, though? Why do they no longer see themselves represented on TV? There are white British people on virtually every single programme, so how are they not represented, exactly?

You think people are triggered by the sight of black and brown faces alongside the white ones? What possible reason could there be for someone to be triggered by this, apart from straightforward racism?

And yes, we see a more diverse range of people on our screens these days, but it is hardly as if straight, white able-bodied people have been erased from view. Far from it. So what are people so upset about?

I don't think we're supposed to talk about Reform being racist.

I don't think we're supposed to talk about Reform being racist.

According to a YouGov poll, 5% of Reform voters consider themselves racist.

But yeah, we should just shrug at an MP's racist comments.

Well I live in an area of the country with vv few non white people and it annoys me. Now it’s been flagged up I hope things change. Like the British gov I feel no one has interest in anywhere except London and possibly other big cities -the rest can go hang.

It's not like white people have disappeared from the telly, so what is it about seeing non white people on the screen that annoys you?Confused

derxa · 27/10/2025 13:47

I see adverts as entertainment. I couldn’t care less who’s in them. They’re representative of the ad agencies world not the world of ordinary people.

Notonthestairs · 27/10/2025 13:52

Advertisers work for businesses.
Businesses are just interested in your cash.

It’s a free market economy. I thought people liked that.

So representation matters to you.

And you feel representation should be taken more seriously when it comes to you, but not to BME, the disabled, the elderly and the pregnant.

Is that right?
