@CalmShaker

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/reform-uk-mp-says-seeing-36133010

Responding, the Reform UK MP said: “I think Stuart is absolutely right, it drives me mad when I see adverts full of Black people, full of Asian people, full of people that are basically anything other than white.”

Pushed on this by the host Peter Cardwell, Ms Pochin doubled down, and insisted “woke” had taken over television.

She said: “It doesn’t reflect our society and I feel that your average white person, average white family is not represented anymore in TV advertising.

"We are talking about adverts, and how many times do you look at an advert and think ‘there’s not a single white person on it, and actually it is, it’s something that has happened, I believe because of the woke liberati that goes on inside this sort of arty farty world, and it when it comes to northern towns like Runcorn that I represent, it is just not representative of the rest of the country.

Coarse, exaggeration, words taken out of context 🤔

Reform UK MP says seeing adverts 'full of Black people' drives her 'mad'

Sarah Pochin was responding to a question about whether her party will do anything about the 'representation of demographics in TV adverts', and claimed white people were 'demonised'

I find it jarring because it’s not representative of this country, nothing to do with ‘race’ 🙄
In China, I would have been surprised to see white or black people in tv advertising.
It’s an obvious agenda on the part of tv advertising.
It’s not surprising/jarring to see different ethnicities on London or Birmingham centric tv. A programme about Farming in Devon or Yorkshire farming or fishing with 50% black or Asian representation however…
If TV should be actually colourblind, why is it that there would be absolute hell up if a white actor or actress played a black or Asian historical figure?

The funny thing is, she asks how many times you see an advert and think "there isn't a single white person in it".

Well, zero! I have literally never thought that. I don't sit counting the number of white people who are appearing on my TV screen. And I'm willing to bet that most people don't!

I’m amazed by this. The balkans is known for its massive racism.

or do you mean there are no issues with racism because you don’t have any POC?

Im pretty sure that was a tongue in cheek/joke post

Of course it has to do with race! We're literally talking about the number of black and brown people on TV. How can it not be about race?!

If you find it jarring, I can only assume that you have some sort of visceral reaction when you see someone with black or brown skin on TV. Most people really don't fixate on this stuff.

Where did you learn this childish condescending irrelevance? Have you been studying Candace Owens? Megyn Kelly? Kelly Ann Conway?

it’s not impactful to the conversation, it just makes you appear feeble.

I am Balkan. Goodness, thanks God we don't have issues with racism nor who goes on what advert where I am from. I just read and roll my eyes these days on everything going on in the west

The Balkans don't have issues with racism 😂.Sometimes you read a post on Mumsnet that is so divorced from reality there's no way you can seriously reply.

There is a problem with colourism in advertising in many Asian and african countries, including China. Their girls are brought up to see the pinnacle of beauty as bleaching their faces. Which advertising do you think is more healthy?

@CalmShaker, just for reference, the "support" reaction is not intended to be used in a sarcastic or passive aggressive way. If you have issues with any of my posts, please have the courage to address your concerns on the thread instead of misusing the reactions.

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with those names, presumably they must be important people to you for you to recite them so quickly. Never heard of them myself. I prefer to make my own mind up on such matters.

Funny you assume I’m white.

4% of our population is black, so logically 4 in 100 adverts should contain black people, no?
I’m against the deliberate altering of public perception.
I want reality shown.
I couldn’t care less about fictional tv, a character can be black, white or sky blue pink for all I care.
In stuff like factual history tv, the colour/race of persons playing Real People does matter.

Notonthestairs · 26/10/2025 19:19

Businesses can decide for themselves what their advertising will consist of.

Advertising isn’t about reality. It’s about selling stuff.

take celebrity endorsements- Serena Williams, Simone biles- they’re bringing in the revenue, no company is going to stop when they’ve reached their black quota.

advertisers use POC in adverts to sell to them.

This is why I do agree that mixed race families are lazy in advertising- they’re just saying “let’s give everyone something from this advert” but you can see why it happens.

Although advertising doesnt work like that does it. Because particular demographics will be more likely to consume certain products. I dont know the ethnicity breakdowns of products but there is certainly more likely to be services and products aimed at male or females, young or old, time of day etc etc.

It would be fairly pointless advertising menopause type products during major sporting events that are likely to be a mostly male audience. Ditto advertising those products during childrens TV

Similarly products mostly used or purchased by men wouldnt really have ad slots during Loose Women (if its still going, you get my drift)

So while there is a proportion of this or that demographic in the country advertising wont align with it that tightly because its about who purchases what.

People from every ethnicity use phones, supermarkets, insurance, utilities flights, eat fast food and drink tea.

Companies want as much income as possible and pay advertising agencies to help generate that income. Why shouldn't their ads feature a diverse cast?Confused

But MP Pochin lives in London for most of the working week. She's a Member of Parliament and has duties to perform on behalf of ALL her constituents.

Why don't you set up your own advertisement agency? Nature abhors a vacuum after all and you clearly see a niche in the market. I'm sure you'll make loads of pennies.
