A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@EmeraldRoulette just got this today - Brave is a good one for blocking ads etc too. MN the worst culprit!

I think the pp may have left us if you read her last paragraph on the original post.

As are the other children in the class, as a result of the teachers having to deal with the kids with greater needs.

As are the teachers themselves, who are now seemingly expected to be all things to all people. All the time.

It’s a horrendous situation and all Labour could do is say vat on education. They make me sick.

Edited

A friend of mine moved her DC to a private school for this very reason. Her quiet, well behaved August born child was struggling, largely due to his age but there were so many SEN children in his class including those with serious physical and mental disabilities that her child didn’t get a look in.

I don't think everyone here blames one party for everything that's gone wrong.

The Conservatives certainly made mistakes as well.

At the risk of putting an uneducated dog into this fight...
I really like phonics. My ds1 who is only turned an adult arrived at school just as Gove was educational minister and mandated phonics as the priority method for literacy learning. So if poor reading skills are to be laid at the feet of producing hardened criminals, I don't expect that can be blamed on phonetics yet, can it?

I was taught by educational hippies in the 80s who thought we would simply imbibe the skill of reading, spelling and grammar through osmosis and whole word flashcards if they were feeling ambitious. The poor secondary school teachers were aghast with the starting point they were left with. Only those with motivated parents had a leg to stand on.

Edited

Phonics is good. I don’t think it’s right for every child which is where the system falls down. Schools are tied to doing it and making every child sit the phonics test. I do wish schools were allowed to drop it where it just does not work.

Agreed. I'm not sure what that comment was about tbh. I have plenty to say about tory failings too, but that's not what this thread is for. We are holding the current government to account. Plenty of us have also voted Labour in the past, me included.

Morning all.
Just stepping in with a gentle reminder that we try to keep this thread free from bun fights. It ruins threads.

As I have said many times, I don't agree with everything I read on here either. I disagree politely, or I keep scrolling. 💙

Fwiw, I agree with both points of view.

Peace to all 💙

I'm not sure how this would look on an MRP poll. I'm not sure Reform wouldn't get an overall majority with those stats.

Upstartled · 29/10/2025 11:06

But if you mean a coalition merged prior to the election, I suppose you could get a formidable coalition from Labour and LibDems if they could work together and the affiliation wouldn't leave voters completely apathetic and unwilling to vote at all.

Yes, agreed. I suppose it depends on distribution which is difficult to assess.

Am I right in thinking that more in common polls are usually much kinder to Labour?
They have higher numbers than some other polls for Reform recently. Although Labour's score is higher too.

Yes sorry I wasn't clear. I wasn't just adding up Reform + Cons. There is also the prospect of a left version.

Upstartled · 29/10/2025 11:11

It did use to be like that but I'm not sure that would be true to say that now. Their MRP poll in September for labour was the most brutal of all the pollsters, suggesting they'd only get 90 seats.

Rivalled · 29/10/2025 11:12

On education SEN we desperately need all of these things on the table, some kids can do best in mainstream with minor adjustments, some kids will never cope in large classes due to sensory needs.

I’m dubious that we’re adequately separating out cost savings from improving outcomes for all children.

Blair wasn’t necessarily wrong to make mainstream an easier choice to make, if it was right for particular children, but it’s become a cost saving push where kids need to fail out of provision a ‘prove you can’t cope’ and that isn’t the right implementation.

A little something to put a smile on everyone's face. There was a knock on my door. I opened it and there stood my mate (6 going on 30) from nextdoor, still in his pj's and slippers holding out a present and card and singing 'Happy Birthday' with gusto. I then handed him a present and card and sang Happy Birthday' back. We share the same birthday, but I have 60 years on him. I tell him he was my 60th bithday present. Oh and apparently, birthdays are pj days!

Aaah I love that. Your previous post about your mate gave me a much-needed smile on a very bad day. My insides feel all squidgy. ❤

I think Reform and conservatives would leave everyone else scrambling - unless you could get Labour, LibDems and Greens to work in cahoots but I don't think any of those coalitions could stomach each other.

Yes I think so too.
Just thinking aloud here, but I'm curious as to what the one-natiion type tories would do if the cons linked up with Reform. Many won't like that, but their natural leap would be towards the Lib Dems. However, if the Lib Dems had got into bed with Labour which seems to be the direction of travel, that would also be a no-no. Anyway, I'm rambling.
