Labour isn't working - Thread 15

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Well, I knew it would happen but not this quickly. My first day as a newly minted pensioner, I haven't even had my breakfast and apparently on another thread in MN world I and my cohort are to blame for Labour's poor fiscal showing. Because my generation has worked hard, saved into a pension pot it's now considered obscene that we also get the state pension. I was half tempted to explain to them how paying for the pension works, but I don't think they'd get it. I really don't understand how people can be so venomous. Hey ho.

I think that’s the same one I’ve been on. The black hole in the budget has gone from a supposed £22bn to over £50bn since this Labour government has been in power. How they can blame pensioners for that is beyond me. And when a few of us disagreed one of them accused us of being Reform bots just because we didn’t share the same opinion.

Thanks @upseedaisee .

@Legolava more teacher understanding and training on Sen would help a huge amount, the lack of training was never really realised before people assumed teachers would recognise if a DC had dyslexia .
That's not for teachers to diagnose or do anything special with just to undertsnd the DC in their class more.

And often small adjustments can really help but not many DC with dyslexia would benefit until they bring in different ways to learn to read

There isn’t enough training but equally there aren’t enough funds or teachers.

The behaviour and need in classrooms now is often way, way beyond a few minor adjustments. I’m talking evacuating classrooms to keep children and adults safe.

I think the rot set in when Tony Blair insisted children with special educational needs were absorbed into mainstream school under his inclusivity banner. What he didn't do was include extra funding and specialist support for these children to receive a proper eductation relevent to their needs. Niether did the system realise each child has different requirements and it soon became clear these children were and are still are getting a very raw deal at the hands of the state education system and it benefits no-one

As are the other children in the class, as a result of the teachers having to deal with the kids with greater needs.

As are the teachers themselves, who are now seemingly expected to be all things to all people. All the time.

It’s a horrendous situation and all Labour could do is say vat on education. They make me sick.

Itcantbetrue · 29/10/2025 09:39

@Legolava I'm also in education and I've seen first hand the small adjustments that could make a huge difference but the education isn't there to do it or back it up.
Not all of it needs huge funding just some back ground context and understanding.
Also those falling behind with literacy are forced to do more phonics it's finally becoming wildly known that actually phonics is a barrier to many DC learning not a help.
Unfortunately schools are tied into the phonics test but simply blending or using different ways with DC who need it would improve literacy rates.

100%. Unfortunately all children are now being failed. Children are in a system which isn’t right for them. It doesn’t have the funding, expertise and ratio needed. The minority don’t have adequate placement because inclusion. The majority are losing their right to an education because inclusion.

Children are faced with losing learning daily. Either through disruption or extreme violence. As I say, children and adults being hurt daily.

Yet schools are powerless to deal with it. Children and adults are expected to tolerate this behaviour because inclusion. Teachers get blamed. Schools aren’t funded and on it goes. Ofsted judge schools harshly on exclusion. I’m talking criminal behaviour here; just excused. I have no idea how these children and parents will cope when they turn 18. The prison service will be overwhelmed. Education needs sorting now.

Exactly this! I was trying to be diplomatic as I know some on this thread have children with special needs and wouldn't want to upset anyone, but you're right it's all the children that suffer in the end. Everyone loses.

And the mods, bless 'em were straight on it.

I agree. I think the focus on phonics is short sighted. However you are talking from a place of extreme privilege and you certainly are not teaching in a typical state. What is your role (are you actually a teacher) and what are your PP/SEND stats? You say you work in education but focus solely on phonics. Odd with the issues addressing us now. Much bigger problems out there.

I do too. Two of my children have EHCPs…the poster is absolutely right.

Itcantbetrue · 29/10/2025 09:52

Unfortunskty the unions are very anti educating teachers on send with the line like ..we are purely teachers and shouldn't be expected to diagnose etc.

The poster of the animal family who is often on MN has said she and others don't even read ehcps !
Teachers should not have to go beyond their role but as they have eyes on the child in primary all the time they are the best placed professionals to note behaviours and feed back to the necessary people and parents .

It would benefit everyone to have just a little more education for teachers on send in the pgce and understanding .

The list of CPD in the union I'm with is more around LGBT inclusive training I'm not sure I've seen anything on send

Itcantbetrue · 29/10/2025 09:54

@Legolava

Yes im in education and I'm not going to be explicit as to where I work and what I do, suffice to say lots of hands on ehcp experience.

A little something to put a smile on everyone's face. There was a knock on my door. I opened it and there stood my mate (6 going on 30) from nextdoor, still in his pj's and slippers holding out a present and card and singing 'Happy Birthday' with gusto. I then handed him a present and card and sang Happy Birthday' back. We share the same birthday, but I have 60 years on him. I tell him he was my 60th bithday present. Oh and apparently, birthdays are pj days!

AbsentosaurusRex · 29/10/2025 08:44

Yes. Scotland were happy to call the English ‘racist’ when they complained. And now it’s in their back yard. Deal with it Hamish.

Labour have certainly managed to turn an ‘everyone welcome’ to discontent in a blink of an eye. So there’s that. The upside will be more people against Labour.

I think Wales offered to be welcoming, perhaps some barracks in PC locations.

  • I have no idea how the prison services will cope ,they will be over whelmed.

  • Focus on phonics //odd / there are much bigger issues.

Really ? What are the literacy rates of prisoners ?

Id say learning to read and being able to access the curriculum from an early age is vital to society.

Children need to be in a place ready to learn before they can even learn to read. I knew the minute I read your posts you’re out to blame teachers. There is no way from your posts you are teaching on the front line. Working in education is like the work in IT version of being on the help desk.

You have NO idea. Your posts are coming across as very uninformed. Signed a current teacher and a mum with two EHCPs in the household,

There are many fixes that must come before children can even begin to learn. Such is the need nowadays.

Have a good day. I can’t engage with anyone who thinks this is an easy fix at teacher level. Beyond clueless.

Upstartled · 29/10/2025 10:22

At the risk of putting an uneducated dog into this fight...
I really like phonics. My ds1 who is only turned an adult arrived at school just as Gove was educational minister and mandated phonics as the priority method for literacy learning. So if poor reading skills are to be laid at the feet of producing hardened criminals, I don't expect that can be blamed on phonetics yet, can it?

I was taught by educational hippies in the 80s who thought we would simply imbibe the skill of reading, spelling and grammar through osmosis and whole word flashcards if they were feeling ambitious. The poor secondary school teachers were aghast with the starting point they were left with. Only those with motivated parents had a leg to stand on.

Morning all.
Just stepping in with a gentle reminder that we try to keep this thread free from bun fights. It ruins threads.

As I have said many times, I don't agree with everything I read on here either. I disagree politely, or I keep scrolling. 💙

Fwiw, I agree with both points of view.
