Daughter in hospital - full thickness burns

Nightmarehairinjury · 22/10/2025 23:00

Title says it all really. I took dd to have her hair coloured today - and she's ended up in burns ward, with full thickness chemical burn on her forehead and a 50/50 chance of needing a skin graft. WTF??? Can't believe it.

Am in bits.

What a strange thread this has been??

Speedy recovery to your daughter OP Flowers

BruisedNeckMeat · 23/10/2025 15:16

To be fair, if the OP had just said she was with her Dad it would have saved a lot of vitriol on both sides.

Hope her recovery is speedy and successful.

JohnofWessex · 23/10/2025 15:23

Report it to The Local Authority and The Health & Safety Executive

I would also suggest if you have insurance that covers legal expenses get on to them.

As she's under 18 you NEED to look at making a claim on her behalf

Bollocks, if people had read OPs second post, and exercised a modicum of critical thinking, they would have recognised there was no need for any vitriol.

domlolreu · 23/10/2025 15:25

Ignore all the vipers OP. I hope your daughter gets the skin graft as planned.
My son had appendix out aged 16 and it never occurred to me to stay overnight!

She's not alone?????

But she doesn’t have her mum there with her does she? ????????????

So what? Does the father sitting by the bed not count? Even though the 16yo is likely asleep and up to the eyeballs on painkillers in the middle of the night? So the mum can have some rest before coming back?

Ketzele · 23/10/2025 15:34

Thinking of you, OP. Ignore the fools on this thread, take care of yourself so you can support your dd.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 23/10/2025 15:38

I sent DH in with child to A&E all three times it's been needed - why he gets lost less and flustered with directions less and someone needed to stay with our other kids - also found with some medical people they still tend towards disimissing Mums but Dad less so which is odd in this day and age but base sadly on experience.

I remember sorting childcare - baby and other toddler heading in and having an A&E nurse demand to know where I'd been Hmm - the reponse on MW was it wouldn't have been meant accusationary/critism way. Looks like now MN would side with that nurse.

I hope OP you DD is having a good a day as she can get. Also hope when things clam down for you you make a formal complaint about the hairdresser as somthing clearly went very wrong.

triballeader · 23/10/2025 15:39

Your Dd really is in the best place to both care for and help her. Burns are often horrific and unexpected injuries that can have life changing consequences. Be kind to yourself as you will be shocked at what has happened so quickly for your loved daughter. It really is okay to take some downtime away so you can rest and compose yourself so you are able to give your daughter the support she needs at this time. ( Written as a mum whose 14 year old daughter who had life changing injuries from a RTA at 12 who used to tell me to go home and get some rest as she would really need me most when she had recovered enough from extra planned surgery to go home)

I truly hope she has some of best burn care nurses and compassionate kind plastics et al consultants able to help her recover and heal.

Wishing her all the best and hoping that her age will give her the resilience to surprise everyone by healing both quickly and well.

You need to report to health and safety executive and tell the hairdresser they need to under RIDDOR. I would also check my household insurance for legal cover.

No need for the vitriol at all. It's none of their fucking business who her daughter is with.

She does actually. Mum has been there since 5am. Of course of you had bothered to read the thread, or even just OPs posts you would have known that.

Vitriolinsanity · 23/10/2025 14:51

I know right now it’s the least of your worries OP, but at some point very soon you’re going to need to speak to the salon manager to get their Insurance details. If they’re aware of the accident they should have already completed an accident report and reported to RIDDOR and their insurer. Very likely the insurer will tell them to not discuss with you beyond giving you the claims adjusters contact details, but you or dad need to make that call as soon as possible.

Be kind to yourself, and wishes for DD’s recovery.

This is very good advice.

Yousay55 · 23/10/2025 16:35

Go back to her, however hard it is. Your dd needs you there.
I’m sorry for your loss of your dm. It sounds like you need counselling for the trauma of losing her.

She's been back with her daughter since 5 am.

All the best for your daughter or tomorrow, Op.

Nightmarehairinjury · 22/10/2025 23:05

It's not an allergic reaction - it's a burn. I should have stayed in hospital with her - I just couldn't deal with it.

Are you joking???

timetochangethering · 23/10/2025 17:00

@Nightmarehairinjury Can you write a letter to the hairdresser stressing the seriousness of the injury and asking for their insurance details.

State she has been hospitalised and will need skin grafts.

State it is a very serious injury and will result in lifelong visible scars.

You need to work out PDQ if they are insured or not as they will just go bust if no insurance so you need to be quick to get from them what you can.

I am hoping for you and her that it is a reputable hairdresser with insurance.

Hobbithermit · 23/10/2025 17:31

The salon should have made self report to the Health and Safety Executive. This is a serious injury to a minor. I hope the salon is prosecuted for negligence. If they haven't accepted responsibility then you need to wonder how safe they are as a company. This sort of thing should not happen.
