A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Apparently housebuilders have abandoned 1 in 6 housing construction projects in London, meaning that about 5,400 homes aren't being built that were being built before they were squeezed by a business landscape that is failing.

There's no way that Labour are ever going to hit these housing targets. How much must it cost to have ghost homes just sat in limbo - on land which is paid for - and for it not be financially viable to push on and bring them to market?

Lutonsgirl · 23/10/2025 12:18

I have no idea why Labour promised that many houses..setting themselves up to fail

I think part of it was to fit into this pro-growth narrative about how Labour were going to reinvigorate business and part of it was a counter to reform who were pushing hard on demonstrating the down sides of uncontrolled migration. Safe to say that they have only given themselves another project that they will inevitably be judged poorly against.

The tax system has become so manipulative and decisive. Special rules if you are a doctor, a judge or Kier Starmer…

Its socially corrosive and it distorts the economy putting a drag on growth.

Definitely, and to try to capture the disaffected younger vote, who have been struggling to get on to the property ladder.

The same disaffected who’s job prospects have vanished in a puff of smoke.

Oh, now that's interesting, some daylight between Reform and Plaid Cymru that wasn't there in June.

twistyizzy · 23/10/2025 13:38

Still doesn't mean a Reform win

No, it would need another unlikely push for that, but if there is a bit more then they might find some support with the conservatives to not be rendered entirely impotent by the left leaning parties. Which I believe is the consensus of the likely outcome - despite how anti-democratic that would be if most voters preferred reform.

Upstartled · 23/10/2025 14:42

I know that Labour memberships are down leaving less money to throw at elections but, holy hell.

Looking at the LLP threat from another (possibly extreme) angle: If GPs decide enough is enough and take their skills elsewhere there will be a knock-on effect on NHS waiting lists. GPs are the gatekeepers to NHS services; so fewer GPs = fewer appointments and subsequent referrals = lower NHS waiting lists.

And, totally ignoring the misery such a situation would incur, Streeting would be claiming Labour has reduced NHS waiting lists.

DH said it was announced this morning that NHS waiting lists were growing again in Wales. The reduction was because GPs weren't referring to consultant or if they were patients were being kicked down the road to our absolute shite physio service at the hospital. Which consists of a photocopy sheet, which is ticked do exercises 2, 3, and 6. Don't come back.

The Times is reporting that Reeves is now planning to make GPs exempt. Somebody must have had a word. Idiots.

The three I know will go anyway. Don't trust them.

You can't have different taxes based on how 'worthy' you think the job is.

What is fucking wrong with these people.

Yep, You either do it for all or none. So much for fair taxation.
I don't know much about the LLP system, but I'm sure there's an awful lot of folk looking at how to mitigate this bloody tax and good on 'em I say.

Maybe Ange was just pre-empting taxes not applying to MPs...

Oh you can be your behind none of will apply to them! Just like taxation on pensions doesn't apply to Starmer's whopper he has from CPS.

strawberrybubblegum · 23/10/2025 17:10

Everything Labour do is just wrong-minded and stupid.

Here's hoping that whoever gets in next spends their first year reversing every single policy Labour brought in.

Then once the foundations - which Labour has taken a sledge-hammer to - are back in place, I'm hoping that whoever it is implements the 24/7 growth plan to actually give the UK a future

Thanks Strawbs. That was a good read, I was nodding along.
I will never understand how or why this government thought the last budget was a good idea.

Arthur Laffer is doing the rounds. I just listened to him on the Daily T, and he will be the guest on the next TRIM.

Hearing him is different from reading him. He is 85 years old but sounds like an enthusiastic kid from California. Seems to be a Brito-phile too.

He does sound it in the article linked. I didn’t realise he was still around, I feel like his theory is so well known. There’s a funny episode of Succession where they spot Laffer which must be him.

I am the only person to have a strong dislike of our so called Safeguarding minister. Her debating style is patronising, angry and generally cones across as uneducated.
