A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Should wealthy individuals have to give away everything except, say £40k a year to live on? Or maybe they need to give away even more? Where would you draw the line?
And should that apply to everyone, or only to people with more money than you

Come on, that's just silly isn't it? But, yes, I obviously think people with more money than me should pay more, just as I should pay more than those with less than me. That's just basic.

You are in the camp of “it’s not fair that someone has more money than me, so they should be forced to give it all away”. It must be difficult to go through life being that bitter.

Rubbish, I'm not bitter. No one is asking them to give it all away, but obviously they have to pay more. All this angst about us 'relying' on them is just illogical. Who else would we be relying - the poor?! Of course the wealthy have to pay more.

I'm not stupid enough to think people have plenty of money would never struggle about other things, and I am very sorry to hear about your son, but of course all children with health conditions should be supported, regardless of the parents' income or wealth, and much of the cost of that will have to be borne by the state, which is why we need those who can to pay more.

So quite frankly you can fuck right off with your sanctimonious “the rich must be bled dry” attitude. It’s not welcome here.

It's not me who sounds bitter, to be honest.

There we go again. “People with more money than me should pay more than me”. “Of course the wealthy should pay more”.

No one is arguing that they shouldn’t! Show me where I, or anyone on this thread, has said that wealthy people should pay more than poorer people?

But do you really not understand that they already do pay more? Both in absolute terms, and as a percentage of their income.

And yes, of course no one is saying that “the poor” should be paying for everything. But if you drive “the rich” away, then who is there left to pay for everything?!

I’m not bitter about anything, except for maybe my son, through a quirk of genetics, being like he is. And not even really then - he’s a fantastic little boy. Just doesn’t deserve to have all the crap to put up with that he does.

But I’m not bitter. I’m just cross about the constant pitting one group against another that our current govt goes in for. Such negative politics, it’s never good.

Yes, sorry, I should. It’s absolutely pointless. And bad for my blood pressure!

Apologies if already discussed…

I see that strike action is planned by Border Force staff.

It’s pretty obvious that this is exploiting a government weak point.

You just know that this will be decried by MN’s Labour supporters. Yet when train drivers, doctors etc came out under the Tories it was all “they have to inconvenience people and pressure the government to be effective”. Not when the inconvenience and embarrassment is to a Labour government though, apparently.

I actually worked for a while with someone who opined loudly and often that no-one needed more than 30k a year as a salary before tax to live on and anyone who earned more than that should have it taken from them.

She regarded any questions about why people would spend years of their time and expense gaining such qualifications as being a doctor or surgeon; an engineer; start their way at the bottom of the heap in the military; become a teacher with all the stresses that brings ' a vet etc as a nonsense. These were all vocations and anyone stupid enough to do it should still have their recompense taken from them. People who started up businesses and employed others- well, they were clearly private sector arseholes who should also have everything they invested and earned taken from them.

I worked with her in a role I left in 2013. She's a senior person in the public sector now and I do wonder how she feels- if she still feels that other people ought to be taxed until they bleed white. I suspect she does. I also wonder how much of her salary she gives away. I also happen to know that she lives in Fulham.

I'm sure she's still spouting the same rubbish, but instead of her original £30k threshold, it will be a figure just above what she now earns 😂.

Sooner or later you run out of other peoples money, as you say.

Ed Davies 'wealth tax' in the election was clearly set at above what he personally had. So is the currently mooted wealth tax that has been chucked around as a possible figure before the next budget.

People always think a fair tax is something someone else has to pay.

Yep, it's always the same predictable nonsense. Most of them seem to find their way into public sector roles too.

You're absolutely right about the current batch of snouts, but I don't think the illusion is shattered at all. All over MN, just as superior as ever despite everything we've experienced since their heros finally took power.
They seem to be pretending that Starmer no longer exists so they can keep the fantasy alive. Look at the polling for hypno-tits. I mean, come on.
