A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just seen on Sky that channel crossings have now reached the same figure as the whole of last year. I'm not sure if that includes the guy from Iran who arrived twice 😂

The Labour loyalists are all receiving the Starmer shilling - hence the unwavering loyalty.

I wonder how many times one person can be recycled, as it were, before he’s given access for sheer determination.

Omg these threads move fast. Thanks for new one. Will have to start another soon. Let's hope this whole pile of shite comes tumbling down. Can't wait.

Catatemyhomework · 22/10/2025 22:43

I just want a government that rewards people who actually work. I mean is that too much to ask. Hell, don't reward us even, but stop taking our hard earned to pay for the feckless, useless, thick and illiterate and any other government initiative that no one wants.

EmeraldRoulette · 22/10/2025 22:49

I haven't had a chance to catch up with this thread so I may be repeating something that's already been said

What really concerned me about the guy who returned to Britain from France - his reason for returning sounds like the authorities laying the groundwork for saying that France isn't safe. The Guardian article said that he was falling victim to trafficking gangs and mentioned that they're working a lot in the forest and forcing people to work for them.

I've heard it said that traffickers are a major problem in themselves in this way. So that's not new. But I think it's going to be an excellent excuse for the government to say they can seek asylum from France.

Of course it wouldn't cover off why they tried to get to France. But that's the first thing I thought when I saw this article.

Also, I don't know if anyone's mentioned what happened in Dublin last night but one thing that struck me about that is that for the Irish government to have spent so much money buying that facility, they obviously see it as a long-term thing.

It's not particularly a surprise to me as I have long thought that there is more to this. I also thought - and have said privately, which effectively means to my mum, because I don't really discuss this stuff - that we (and I suspect other European countries) will eventually just do a blanket amnesty allowing everyone to stay.

I did wonder if this was the reason why the Tories weren't processing applications.

SpaceRaccoon · 22/10/2025 22:54

It seems like madness though, the tide of public opinion is so firmly in the other direction now.

I also think that the UK and Europe have effectively lost control of law and order. You and I of course would still be arrested, as thst would be easy enough, but thru clearly have no ability whatever to deal with the people trafficking gangs.

It's effectively modern slavery, it's not just the people smugglers making a profit. It's a very easy way to turn taxpayer money into profit for the service providers - the more "units", the more profit. What's a few rapes when there's money to be made.

Parsley4321 · 22/10/2025 23:07

Sorry I missed what happened in Dublin last night

@twistyizzy , enjoy your holiday. Take time out and try and forget about the shit show that is the UK ❤️

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 22/10/2025 23:12

I very much doubt there’s any secret, grand plan. Governments just can’t control things like population movements. The best they can do is to introduce disincentives to cross a border. Like off-shore processing and swift repatriation. That’s expensive - like Rwanda - but it’s the only humanitarian solution.

This government is finding out that the electoral, social and financial costs of fiddling around the edges is greater than having a proper scheme of distant processing and return, albeit limited.

”Smash the gangs” will turn out to be Labour’s most costly albatross. So soundbite, so shit.

Yes that’s all that can be done within the convention and law. Cancelling Rwanda on day one will bite Starmer and Labour, even cost them the next GE. There’s a reason Labor in Aus would never drop the closest equivalent.

ETA it might take even more to match Aus but that’s all that works.

Doesn't it? I think we've ploughed through half a thread in two days. Lots of people contributing and a lot of reasons to think Labour isn't working.

Sorry I missed what happened in Dublin last night

There was a demonstration, leading to some hairy situations, police using pepper spray, etc in Citywest. The reason for the demo, as I understand it, was that an asylum seeker has been charged with the rape of a 10-year-old girl. The asylum seeker was apparently meant to be deported in March and I don't yet know why he's still there.

The facility where they were demonstrating was bought by the government for approximately €150 million.

‘Smash the gangs’?

France is backing away from a recent commitment to intervene more forcefully at sea to stop small boats from crossing the English Channel, according to multiple sources contacted by the BBC.

There is evidence that France's current political turmoil is partly to blame, but it will come as a blow to the UK government's attempts to tackle the issue.
In the meantime, dangerously overcrowded inflatable boats continue to leave the coast on an almost daily basis, from a shallow tidal canal near the port of Dunkirk.

While the man in charge of border security in the UK, Martin Hewitt, has already expressed "frustration" at French delays, the BBC has now heard from a number of sources in France that promises of a new "maritime doctrine" - which would see patrol boats attempt to intercept inflatable boats and pull them back to shore – are hollow.

"It's just a political stunt. It's much blah-blah," said one figure closely linked to French maritime security.

Nolletimiere · 23/10/2025 07:14

The government is under increasing pressure to gain control of the grooming gangs inquiry after abuse survivors who quit their roles in the process listed conditions for their return.

Top of the demands - published in a joint letter to the home secretary - was the resignation of Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips, who the four women accuse of "betrayal", citing her response to their concerns about the inquiry's scope.
They said Phillips had lost survivors' trust, and that she and candidates to chair the inquiry were unfit for their roles. Her exit would mean the government was "serious about accountability", they added.

Home Office sources insist Phillips has the home secretary's full support.

The only way to stop the boats is to stop the incentives. Everything else is a sticking plaster.

Even Macron told us that.

StarieNight · 23/10/2025 07:25

But aren't we giving lots of money to France to stop these boats ?
Why can't we do it then on their shore with our own people working in conjunction

the returned migrant must have been in their risk planning ,what happens if they simply return .

Has starmer answered questions on that yet ?

I agree with the poster who said labour can't solve anything because they are looking through six form politics lenses. .
They are fucking up everything they are touching including education.
In all sorts of ways ,they never tackled the story behind the headlines and they are not addressing the issues
They are now ditching b tech which was an assignment based exam light qualification at a level level which was a way through for students who struggle with exams.

That’s right.

I rather suspect Starmer does not want to curb immigration, deep down.

There were some wins for the UK at the Western Balkans Summit at Lancaster House in central London today.
The UK unveiled a fresh list of sanctions - and believes it has made some headway convincing the EU to follow suit by placing restrictions on the likes of Kosovo passport forgers.

British participants also claimed to be pleased that Serbia and Montenegro were added to a joint migration taskforce and said UK and EU law enforcement would work even more closely.

But was it a moment where Sir Keir Starmer could convincingly claim to have taken a decisive step towards smashing the gangs, which was one of the goals he claimed he had for the summit this afternoon? Absolutely not.

While presented domestically as a means to tackle illegal immigration, in fact, the Western Balkans Summit was not primarily about migration, and I understood the talks focused on many other areas, including growth opportunities and EU enlargement.

Indeed, I was told that return hubs were not even on the prime minister's agenda.
