As a young Gen Xer, excited to see in the coming years babies called Yvonne, Susan, Joan, Ian, Richard and Brian etc.

I assume it's going to happen in the great cycle of names?

OP posts:

My theory is that names come round about every 100 years.

BrieHugger · 19/10/2025 18:35

My parents generation were astounded when their parents names came back in - Elsie, Arthur, Frank, Dorothy etc.

Agree with @CheeseCakeSunflowers on the 100 year thing.

So yes I think we’ll see more of Susan, Alan, Keith & Carol in the next decade or two.

Otterslovecrabs · 19/10/2025 18:41

I am too - some of the names being used now are ridiculous.

I follow a couple on instagram (corysworld) who don’t work - make their complete living by vlogging their life which consists of basically eating themselves to an early grave on every takeaway you can imagine. Multiple a day. It’s disgusting as it’s basically making a living by extreme eating.

Theyve just had a baby and called it ‘Adventure’.

People have commented that the child will be bullied in school and the answer is they’re planning to home school.
probably so they can carry on making money off exposing their and the child’s life to everyone with their extreme ways.

I'm more excited about the potential Tracy Stacey, Claire, Louise, Catherine, Rebecca, Danielle, Kelly, Shelley, Melanie and Vicky babies that must make a comeback one day.

Funnily enough most of the boy names from the same era are still quite popular.

Apart from maybe Wayne, Dean, Simon, Neil, David, Paul... Adam?

Why follow them when you obviously don’t like them?

NormasArse · 19/10/2025 19:33

I’ve just suggested my Grandmother’s name to my son and DIL- they both love it! It probably won’t make the cut, but I love that they didn’t just dismiss it!

SmellsLikeTeenArmpit · 19/10/2025 19:33

I think it's starting already.

I've heard of babies called Sally, Susan, Barbara and Dorothy in the last year.

Not so sure about boys tho, the ones I know have all been the usual Arlo/Milo/Leo type names.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 19/10/2025 19:38

I would love to see names from my parents era back in favour.
Born in the mid sixties and family names were:
Linda
Valerie
Jane
June
Edna
Olive
Wendy

My Gran laughed loudly when I told her Arthur and Ethel had made a comeback

PurBal · 19/10/2025 19:58

I know a baby Ian and a baby Joan.

That’s got nothing to do with what the OP is talking about.

I know a toddler called Wendy! I loved Valerie and Vivian but my DP wouldn’t go for them for either of our girls

Yep I’ve also met a baby Sally and a baby Valerie recently. Both beautiful names to be fair but ones I thought wouldn’t come round for a very long time, if ever.

I wouldn’t put Dorothy in the same camp as Val/Linda/Sue/Pam/Chris/Wendy though. That’s the generation before.

How lovely.
Her parents will be able to read her Peter Pan.

I thought that was just click bait, the baby is called Rory

KimHwn · 19/10/2025 20:07

Victoria Coren and David Mitchell have a Barbara! I always find that a name for a specific generation.

Otterslovecrabs · 19/10/2025 20:08

No, it’s been announced today as “adventure” - I have unfollowed, it’s actually annoyed me - he’s a beautiful baby too. I genuinely hope they don’t bring him up with their ways.

Anyway, back to the thread, my daughter is expecting and if a girl it will be Junie (Juniper) I love it!

MrsBeltane · 19/10/2025 20:08

Waiting for baby Derrick.

Danikm151 · 19/10/2025 20:11

One name that really shouldn’t come back…. Nigel.

When a friend named their child Arthur I joked it’s a little old man name but loads of old time names are coming back in.

I think baby Brian would be strange though.

TheLette · 19/10/2025 20:11

Can't wait for some of the 80s names to come back in; I never met a bad Sarah, for example.

I really dislike the popular names these days - generally meh, or too posh or frilly.

I'm amused that you believe this! They make good money out of people's disgust of them, half of what they post is just for the engagement and is misleading. Adventure isn't the baby's name either, they're not going to tell the world because there are people who will run to mumsnet to slag them off.

Neverbeentothegym · 19/10/2025 20:14

@Danikm151my kid is called Brian!

APatternGrammar · 19/10/2025 20:14

I know small children called Ian and Yvette

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 19/10/2025 20:16

I think our parents names are already back. Will our classmates names ever make it, I wonder?
Brett, Darren, Kevin, Tanya, Michelle and Lisa.

MsJJones · 19/10/2025 20:16

I’ve taught quite a few Brians, Alans and Davids in the past few years - all from E. European backgrounds so they are evidently in a different name cycle to the UK.
