As a young Gen Xer, excited to see in the coming years babies called Yvonne, Susan, Joan, Ian, Richard and Brian etc.

I assume it's going to happen in the great cycle of names?

OP posts:
DelectableMe · 20/10/2025 11:51

Malcolm is a classic Scottish name. Veronica is very elegant I think.

Firebird83 · 20/10/2025 12:16

I know a toddler Carol

Names roughly have a 100 year cycle so we’re still in the 20s names at the moment. Next will be names like Freda, Hilda, Gloria, Joan, Peggy, Edwin, Walter, Raymond etc. It will probably be a while until the mid-century names come back in.

Yes, but she is late 50s! I think it's a lovely name.
I also like Shona and Moira.

HairyToity · 20/10/2025 13:04

I know young children with following names that have been mentioned:

Olive
Jane
June
Rebecca
Nancy
Judy
Sally

Paul (named after his grandfather, who'd died when his dad was a teenager)
Robert (shortened to Robbie)
Greg

I secretly love the name Pamela, I'd have shortened it to Pammie, but wasn't brave enough.

Shame, that's a great name! I really like Paul and Robbie, good classic names without being too posh.
They'll stand out among the Teddies, Alfies and Albies!

That's such a shame, it's such a nice name. I have 2 lovely friends called Karen.

HairyToity · 20/10/2025 13:10

I just noticed Larry has had been mentioned. My teenage DD has a Laurence in her class, that is shortened to Larry. It suits him, and the name has grown on me.

Wonderknicks · 20/10/2025 13:13

My DD works with small children. She says Hazel (lovely name) & Penelope are definitely on asking a comeback.

How lovely.
Her parents will be able to read her Peter Pan.

Love the origin of the name Wendy. https://interestingliterature.com/2020/12/wendy-girls-name-origin-meaning/

And she will definitely have a wendyhouse to play in.

I was born in 1967 and my year was full of girls called Julie, Gillian, Heather, Alison and Tracey. There were two or three of each in every class. The boys were John, Michael, Paul, Stephen and David. My parents gave us names that were incredibly old fashioned - popular about 20 or 30 years before. I absolutely hate my name. It will probably never be back🤣 Everyone had an auntie or a granny with my name. There were two sisters who lived near us called Charmaine and April and I remember my dad commenting on their ridiculous names. I thought they were lovely. It’s strange though, how the names can suddenly shift. My brother is 4 years younger than me and the popular names in his year were very different.

JadziaD · 20/10/2025 13:39

I was born in the 70s. Catherine (in about 50 different spellings) and Nicola (also with different spellings) were basically the most common girls' names. I don't think I know any children called either of these names.

And boys were almost all called John/Jonathan or Thomas/Tom. And quite a few david's now I think about it. I think my class had 4 John/Jonathans and at least two Toms! Grin

My dad's name is John as well though and quite a few of my friends' Dads were John too. So that one was clearly around for a while. Can't remember the last time I met anyone called John under the age of 50. I used to know LOADS when I worked in the City - but they were all my age or older!

Perfectlypea · 20/10/2025 13:39

The boys, late 70s in my class were:

Gregory
Jake
Jerome
Darren
Simon
Lee
Stephen
Matthew
Julian
Nigel

jokkkshfjjf · 20/10/2025 13:46

We are in an area of high Eastern European immigration and with that there’s lots of names I’d consider my parents age! Kevin, Alan, Adrian to name a few. Doesn’t seem to be the same with girls names though.

soyourtimehascome · 20/10/2025 14:01

Born In the late 70s - most of my school friends were Emma, Rachel, Claire, Helen, Sarah. Boys were John, Phil, Scott, Daniel, Neil, Chris, James, Matthew. Hardly hear any of those now - Emma and James still classics which could be from any era but the others are very 1970s.
I love the evolution of names and how you can (usually) tell someone’s age by their name. I love it when I’m wrong though and meet a 20 year old Phil!

There’s a small kid near me of about 5/6 yo called Roy. Every time I hear his mum call his name I just can’t believe she’s actually done it and that’s his name. I listen to a podcast where the host’s young son is called Ian, which also always makes me slow blink for a bit.

There's a similarly aged Roger near me.

JeansJeanies · 20/10/2025 16:00

My DH is a Geoffrey, b 1970's, I doubt it will ever make a comeback :-)

Everlore · 20/10/2025 16:19

We have a nine month old with a lovely name that we picked because it is quite timeless and because we thought it wouldn't be too common. Turns out we were quite wrong, have met quite a few other baby girls with the same name at groups and elsewhere, still love it though and don't regret choosing it, it's not as common as Olivia for example, which surely has to peak soon since it seems to be the name of every other girl under twenty-five I meet! Still a good name but quite over-used at the moment.
I think it is probably just the area we live in and the kind of people who attend the groups we frequent, but most babies in our daughter's cohort, especially the girls, have beautiful but what I would consider old-fashioned names like Mabel, Elsie, Phoebe, Edith, Lily, Grace, etc, all names that belonged to very elderly family members of mine. I have also recently met more than one Nola, Hazel and Ivy, all of which I like too. I think these type of names are very in vogue right now, in certain circles. I rarely come across a baby with a name I don't think is lovely. Again, it may just be the people I encounter but I am not sure where all these terrible modern names people keep banging on about are as I never hear them! Boys names are a bit more mixed, lots of classic names like James, Patrick and Theo/Teddy, but also some more unusual ones than you tend to hear for the girls we know. Maybe that is because there seems to be less choice for boys names than for girls so people sometimes need to get a bit creative. However, none of the more unusual boys' names we've come across have been bad either, most of them sound great and have clearly been chosen with care and consideration.

You never know. We used to mock a boy who lived in our road for being called Henry as it seemed so posh. Now it's very common. I remember meeting a baby Stanley about 15 years ago and being almost shocked, but have met several since. I'm hoping for Doris to make a comeback, great name.

InTheNotswolds · 20/10/2025 17:56

My DD has a class mate called Nigel

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/10/2025 18:00

I really like Karen and Elaine, but I can't see Karen coming back any time soon.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 20/10/2025 18:51

Sat in the gp waiting room today and a doctor came out to call the next patient.
As she shouted for Angel I rolled my eyes and humphed inwardly.
At least our older names are actual names.

I am too - some of the names being used now are ridiculous.

I follow a couple on instagram (corysworld) who don’t work - make their complete living by vlogging their life which consists of basically eating themselves to an early grave on every takeaway you can imagine. Multiple a day. It’s disgusting as it’s basically making a living by extreme eating.

Theyve just had a baby and called it ‘Adventure’.

People have commented that the child will be bullied in school and the answer is they’re planning to home school.
probably so they can carry on making money off exposing their and the child’s life to everyone with their extreme ways.

I follow this couple too on Insta. It’s basically morbid curiosity at this point
