As a young Gen Xer, excited to see in the coming years babies called Yvonne, Susan, Joan, Ian, Richard and Brian etc.

I assume it's going to happen in the great cycle of names?

@EverybodyLTBi know the pod you mean & I think that’s actually a made up name for privacy purposes.

No way 😂 I ever so slightly judged him for that. I thought he was trying too hard to be cool, like David Mitchell calling his kid Barbara!

One name that really shouldn’t come back…. Nigel.

When a friend named their child Arthur I joked it’s a little old man name but loads of old time names are coming back in.

I think baby Brian would be strange though.

I know a lovely 9 year old Brian. Now I'm used to it I can't imagine him being called anything else.

BeanQuisine · 19/10/2025 22:35

Olive, Ivy, Fern, Rose, Violet, Marigold etc. are all cosy names, but they were probably regarded as ridiculous when they first became popular.

I know someone who just had a baby and called her Nancy. Haven't heard that name for decades.

I really like Belinda, Pamela, Amanda, Susan, Janet, they could all have a comeback.

Growing up in the 1980s, my cats were called Pamela and Belinda!
I thought Belinda was the most impossibly glamorous name imaginable.

Nancy has been popular round here for about 10 to 12 years. It is a lovely name.

iamfairlysureiam · 20/10/2025 06:54

I know a few Nancys. I am not a massive fan of it but it’s fairly popular.

I think a lot of it is associations. When I hear Edie, Iris, Dorothy, Winnie and Hazel I don’t picture elderly women any more but sweet little girls so it’s become normalised for me. I guess the same will eventually become true for Shirley and Maureen and Julie.

101SpottyDogs · 20/10/2025 07:04

I think the name Sheila sounds ready for a come back. It’s so pretty, I’m surprised people aren’t using it again already.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 20/10/2025 07:10

Yes they will come back in fashion.
Not so long ago names such as Arthur and Wilfred were deemed truly awful. Not to mention the likes of Olive. No offence to anyone but they are no nicer than Michelle, Susan or Darren.

Sassylovesbooks · 20/10/2025 07:12

My parents are in their 80's now and my grandparents have long passed away but their names are: Valerie, Victor, Brenda, Edward, Henry, Blanche! The only name I like is Edward, which is my Dad's middle name and my grandfather's name. I used it as one of my son's middle names.

GooseberryFoolish · 20/10/2025 07:30

I work in a one form entry school, so I meet a number of small new people each year, but around 25, not millions.

There's been a fair few Brian/Bryan's over the years. Could be cultural though, as it's still more common in some countries than here and it's a diverse area. I quite like it. They've all been absolute sweethearts, so I have good associations with the name!

I would love to see names from my parents era back in favour.
Born in the mid sixties and family names were:
Linda
Valerie
Jane
June
Edna
Olive
Wendy

You've got three generations of names in that list. They're all from the 60s/70s, except Olive, who would have been Jane's mother, and Edna, who would have been her grandmother.

Not in this case.

I know a baby Ian and a baby Joan.

Ian is a fab name.😃

YellowCrayola · 19/10/2025 20:03

Yep I’ve also met a baby Sally and a baby Valerie recently. Both beautiful names to be fair but ones I thought wouldn’t come round for a very long time, if ever.

I wouldn’t put Dorothy in the same camp as Val/Linda/Sue/Pam/Chris/Wendy though. That’s the generation before.

I think those names are older than you think, with Dorothy older but popularised by the Wizard of Oz which was released in 1939.

MasterMind1982 · 20/10/2025 07:50

I have 5 Sarah friends

I met someone recently whose two young children were my parents names. Was quite an odd moment. My mum would never have believed that her name would become popular.

What were your parents' names, otherwise I don't see how we can judge.

DurinsBane · 20/10/2025 07:54

I’m still waiting for Beryl to come back 😁

DelectableMe · 20/10/2025 07:55

I'm glad stronger names are coming back for girls. I teach a lot of teenage girls called Daisy, Maisie, Lottie, Dottie etc.

TheBewleySisters · 20/10/2025 08:08

I know a toddler Jacqueline. I think it’s a lovely name. They don’t shorten it either.

What about Nigel and Jeffrey?!

Katypp · 19/10/2025 21:20

But to my generation, names like Arthur, Ernest, Ethel and Mabel sound ridiculous.

Yes. I couldn't believe it when I started to hear of babies being named Ethel, Arthur etc. My instant reaction was 'why would you do that to a child?'

Anyway, looking forward to all the Micks, Daves, Steves, Lindas and Sharons returning.

DelectableMe · 20/10/2025 09:06

Yes, I know 2 toddlers called Ernie!

Echobelly · 20/10/2025 11:44

Yvonne, Yvette and Veronica are nice names that could do with reviving.

I actually rather like Malcolm. Less sure about Derek and Barry, though.
