As a young Gen Xer, excited to see in the coming years babies called Yvonne, Susan, Joan, Ian, Richard and Brian etc.

I assume it's going to happen in the great cycle of names?

OP posts:
HarlequinHare · 19/10/2025 20:19

I really like Belinda, Pamela, Amanda, Susan, Janet, they could all have a comeback.

Menonut · 19/10/2025 20:22

I have to admit I laughed 20 years ago when my son came home and told me he’d been playing with Stanley, Archie and Henry, sounded like he’d been down the pub with a load of old men. Those names are normal now.
But as others have said, can’t wait for the Kevins, Ian’s, Michael’s and Alan’s to come back round.

Ygfrhj · 19/10/2025 20:34

I know a baby Valerie and where I live there are lots of babies called Paul.

Why follow them when you obviously don’t like them?

I’m glad someone else asked it.

About 20 years ago I was working as a supply teacher in a year 6 class. A girl came up to me and said ‘I’m Pamela and this is Barbara let us know if you need anything’. I thought they were taking the piss but they genuinely were called that!

And I had two variations on Susan in one class a year or so ago.

PhuckTrump · 19/10/2025 20:46

Neil, Keith, Gary, Larry, Steve, Jason, Alan, Linda, Lisa, Karen, Greg, Debbie, Jen, Shawn, Ryan, Tina, Nicola

strangeandfamiliar · 19/10/2025 20:46

Some of the people I know who were born 1940-1960 are called Tony, Andrew, Karen, Maureen, Sandra, Valerie, Keith, Rodney, Jennifer, Elaine, Jill, Kenneth, Alan, Caroline, David, Roger, Philip, Beverley, Janice, Diane and Lorraine....I suppose that does means my grandchildren might be named from that era's list when the time comes!

EveningSpread · 19/10/2025 20:47

I know babies called Dennis, Frank, Bernie, Maggie, and Beatrix.

Can’t wait to see babies called Neil, Alan, Sharon and Linda!

I'm amused that you believe this! They make good money out of people's disgust of them, half of what they post is just for the engagement and is misleading. Adventure isn't the baby's name either, they're not going to tell the world because there are people who will run to mumsnet to slag them off.

I’m gullible then! I did believe they’d called it Adventure, hopefully they haven’t. I’m more concerned that we’ll see that darling baby in a high chair in a years time being fed McDonalds or chippy teas. Pair of them are ridiculous! The amount and type of food they put away in a day. It’ll catch up with them one day.

Otterslovecrabs · 19/10/2025 20:50

Sorry, I’ll get off my high horse and won’t derail the thread. I had just watched a reel of them and my back was right up.

Anyway, we’ve just had a little boy born in the street - Dougie. I quite like it!

VoltaireMittyDream · 19/10/2025 20:52

Names from this era I can’t wait to see again:

Gordon
Colin
Clive
Nigel
Jeremy
Geoffrey
Barry
Bob
Neil
Kenneth
Keith

Gillian
Nina
Carol
Nancy
Linda
Judy
Deborah
Joyce
Moira
Marcia

EverybodyLTB · 19/10/2025 20:53

There’s a small kid near me of about 5/6 yo called Roy. Every time I hear his mum call his name I just can’t believe she’s actually done it and that’s his name. I listen to a podcast where the host’s young son is called Ian, which also always makes me slow blink for a bit.

It's a social media thing for people to film themselves eating shite, then bin the rest, before posting it in order to get horrified comments and engagement. It's very profitable! There's one influencer who is abusing Mounjaro but posts videos of himself stuffing his face with crap- the only thing he doesn't show is that those two mouthfuls are the only things he'll be eating all day.
I wonder if there are any babies called Mounjaro?!

Can't wait for some of the 80s names to come back in; I never met a bad Sarah, for example.

I really dislike the popular names these days - generally meh, or too posh or frilly.

I dunno. I was born in the 80s and I think that all the 80s names are really boring. Every other person was called Katie, Laura, Vicky, Gemma, Becky or Nicola

Maybe everyone thinks this about their own generation as you have so much exposure to the names.

Otterslovecrabs · 19/10/2025 20:56

Thank you for explaining, I just thought that’s how they were. My daughter showed me them - I couldn’t believe what she was telling me so I started following them too. I sometimes wonder what this world is coming to.

SwedishEdith · 19/10/2025 20:58

I met someone recently whose two young children were my parents names. Was quite an odd moment. My mum would never have believed that her name would become popular.

pastabest · 19/10/2025 18:52

I'm more excited about the potential Tracy Stacey, Claire, Louise, Catherine, Rebecca, Danielle, Kelly, Shelley, Melanie and Vicky babies that must make a comeback one day.

Funnily enough most of the boy names from the same era are still quite popular.

Apart from maybe Wayne, Dean, Simon, Neil, David, Paul... Adam?

Funnily enough Paul has been a consistently popular name for the last 20 years in Germany

IsItWickedNotToCare · 19/10/2025 21:11

Darren, Kevin and Gary

BallerinaFall · 19/10/2025 21:15

Geoff, Brian, Linda, Valerie, Paula, Steve, Carol

As a preschool teacher I can see Valerie and Carol

One name that really shouldn’t come back…. Nigel.

When a friend named their child Arthur I joked it’s a little old man name but loads of old time names are coming back in.

I think baby Brian would be strange though.

But to my generation, names like Arthur, Ernest, Ethel and Mabel sound ridiculous.

PhuckTrump · 19/10/2025 20:46

Neil, Keith, Gary, Larry, Steve, Jason, Alan, Linda, Lisa, Karen, Greg, Debbie, Jen, Shawn, Ryan, Tina, Nicola

My 9yr old Grandson is Ryan, that's not a particularly historic name.

FlamingoBiscuits · 19/10/2025 21:54

It's like listing middle managers: Scott, Jason, Darren, Kevin, Matt, Dave, Phil, Martin, Pete, Mike, Jeremy

mindutopia · 19/10/2025 21:55

My kids have a grandparent and great grandparent’s names. They are very classic names though. Nothing weird.

One of my childhood friend’s named her baby (now 6 year old) Bruce though, which always gives me a little giggle.

@EverybodyLTBi know the pod you mean & I think that’s actually a made up name for privacy purposes.

JennyForeigner · 19/10/2025 22:13

This is my husband's running joke. If he reads a bedtime story the dragons are Ian and Darren. Ghosts are called Chris or Martin. Dinosaurs are Stacy or Hayley.
