A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Read an article in the Times this morning about bringing pensions into scope for inheritance tax. This only includes DC schemes so basically almost all private sector workers these days. DB schemes, which now only exist in the public sector, will be exempt. Is there any sort of reasonable explanation for this difference does anyone know?

Interesting about bullion.

I cannot recollect ever hearing people talk about buying bullion as part of any discussion. But I was at a lunch this week and one woman said she had just bought £50k worth and had to have a purpose-built safe made in her floor. Others said they were also going for bullion. (3 out of the 9 at the lunch)

These are all retirees from professional jobs aged in their 70s and 80s. It had never crossed my mind before.

What? That’s insane 😂😂

Rivalled · 18/10/2025 10:01

Don’t db scheme benefits usually
die with you and only pass on half to remaining spouse? It’ll vary but in general are they less
likely to be inherited by someone subject to IHT?

And good morning all x

I’m on my second coffee already. As it’s mostly milk my theory is that it’s not so bad for me. 😂

Not quite sure where this mug came from. I probably bought it for a child a few years ago. Last few days, I’ve taken to it 😂🤷‍♀️

Good for them! I love this. That's exactly how I want to be at 80- hoiking gold bars into my underground safe, whilst chunnering "fuck the government". 😁

I've mentioned this before, but I too have noticed how social conversations have changed since Labour took office. How to move assets/money is a regular convo now between my friends and colleagues now. I know more about my friend's finances now than I ever did before.

Edited

Good morning 😁

I love your mug. The right cup makes all the difference. Mine has a Highland cow on it this morning, also on my second coffee. Next one will be decaff.

100% TNh.

It’s incumbent on all of us to do everything we can to keep our money out of Labour’s clutches. I see it as sport. I recently reduced my Jan 26 tax liability
significantly - I wont pay these bastards a penny more than is necessary.

Labour brought this upon themselves.

I just don't think DS will be ready for GCSE's in June 2027/2028. Perhaps I am just trying to protect away from the adult world. I do not think the school would accept him in to year 9. The current school have been very accessible and have been excellent within their remit of provision for the EHCP. I another problem that has recently reared his head is bullying towards DS This is because some 14/15 year old's have suddenly realized that DS comes from the wealthiest family at the school and is not one of them.

Ok maybe that’s part of the reason. I have a friend who is single with no children. She’s leaving everything to nieces and nephews but she’s now a bit concerned she may be leaving them with an inheritance tax problem. She sees her options as finding someone to marry (unlikely!) or spending more than she planned to, whilst trying to keep enough to pay for care if needed.

Good for you. It must be hurting the treasury coffers if everybody is doing the same.

The thought of our January tax bill is making me feel ill tbh. Trying to avoid thinking about it to stay sane rn, but its keeping dh awake at night. We might have to borrow to pay it, in which case the business in done. If Rachel hits us again next month, it's game over anyway.

Yes - people who have a DB pension don’t get an individual pot of money (unless they take a transfer value out) but do get a pension promise from their employer / ex employer.

Sorry I know you said wrong thread but why not get him a tutor to help towards his GCSE’s. Could make all the difference. Are you at a private school?

redange · 18/10/2025 11:37

Potentially moving with EHCP from state to a private school which have suggested DS drops from year 10 to going in to year 8 this January.

Posters on other thread have said two years drop is socially difficult.

Ah ok. Think I understand now. So with DB schemes there is no individualised “pot” as such to tax. Fortuitous outcome for public sector workers.

The conservatives have given one of their reserved seats on the public accounts committee to Rupert Lowe.

I was glad to read that the cons also gave Rosie Duffield one of their seats on the women and equalities committee.

Rupert Lowe stands and speaks in the House of Commons, holding a piece of paper. He wears a suit, tie, and glasses. The chamber is filled with other formally dressed members, with wooden panelling and ornate architectural details visible in the backgro...

Rosie Duffield, the Canterbury MP who quit Labour after clashes over the party's stance women's and transgender rights, now holds a Conservative seat on the Women and Equalities Committee.

Not just over that issue but also over the fact the Labour Party, and especially Keir Starmer, treated her terribly whether she held sex realist views or not. I think at one point he gave her the silent treatment… She said they’re all misogynists, in one way or another.

Fantastic news anyway 👏🏻

Lutonsgirl · 18/10/2025 14:25

Lowe and Duffield are certainly two of the better MPs in my view.

AbsentosaurusRex · 18/10/2025 14:31

I see people jeering about this. So utterly idiotic. This company employs people. The ideology of Labour is so destructive. Imbecilic. Embarrassing for them. The first state schooled gvt isn’t showing off the results of a state school education particularly well, is it.

"We are not talking about [the accused] walking about with a Star of David chain on his neck in an open forum in public generally.
“We are talking about a very niche environment where tensions are high, where two sides are coming together, have adverse opinions, have adverse views."

Can we even imagine a situation where someone wearing a hijab was even mentioned, let alone a police officer saying in a statement that wearing that religious symbol was 'antagonising the situation further.' Can't imagine any comment even about a keffiyeh!

Two tier justice and horrific, institutionalised anti-semitism.
