The psychology behind peoples WhatsApp settings

SoI have WhatsApp and you can see my 'last seen' etc
I have a few contacts that have hidden this so when I msg them I cannot see when they were last online nor do the ticks go blue when they have read my message. The only time I see 'online' with these contacts is if they reply to my message and start typing when I am messaging them.

Why do you think ppl have their 'last seen' hidden? I find it suspicious tbh

@lovenotwar149 why do you care so much? What would you do if i explained my reasons?

Mywindow · 09/10/2025 10:00

Got added by a manager, because they had my mobile number, who turned out to be very demanding. WhatsApp became about the 3rd way that they tried to give me instructions (additional to 2 email accounts and a project management tracker, although work instructions were jumbled among all three methods for extra confusion).
They wrote me a very long message on a Sunday morning, also my Mum's birthday, while they were on holiday, to nit pick with a process I had been handling in their absence. Never again. It was then that I decided to be extremely careful with the app and realised what was under the veneer of that person.

You haven’t answered my question.

also. There’s a quote button. It’s helpful if you use it and then people know to whom you are replying.

LoveItaly · 09/10/2025 10:01

It’s not odd at all. It’s so that you can message without other people who are waiting for you to reply to them being able to see you’ve been on. I leave messages unanswered for a while sometimes, if they require a lengthy/more considered response.

Suspicious!!??? What an odd way of looking at it.

I have no last seen (apart from for my children) and no blue ticks (can't differentiate , so this is for everyone)

I have these settings because it provides an element of privacy which i like

This.

How is it a red flag?

I suppose it is if you're extremely nosey, which would seem to describe OP.

Taztoy · 09/10/2025 10:03

@lovenotwar149 have you ever been stalked either online or offline?

Deedeebob · 09/10/2025 10:03

DingDongJingle · 09/10/2025 09:46

Urgh this has been done a million times before on here.
I have ‘last seen’ hidden because 1) Why would I want anyone to know when I was last online? And 2) Why would anyone care when I was last online? I don’t actually know anyone who has it enabled.
What do you think it’s a red flag for? Personally I think someone caring so much about it is a red flag.

This

minipie · 09/10/2025 10:03

DingDongJingle · 09/10/2025 09:50

I didn’t say I don’t care. I actively don’t want people knowing when I was last online, that’s why I switched it off.
I meant that I think people caring that other people have it switched off is a red flag. Why do they so desperately want to know when someone was last online?

Oh ok yes that makes sense.

Thank you for this thread. I’ve never actually looked at my WhatsApp settings, so this piqued my interest. I’ve just been on and switched off my ‘last seen and online’.
