The Victoria Beckham documentary - is this a weird perspective of mine?

Just reading about tonight's premiere of VB's documentary and seeing the Beckhams lined up ready to watch it, and all I can think of is how awful it is for the kids (and particularly Harper) having to watch all this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't ever be vulnerable in front of our kids and I know they have to understand the real world etc etc, but it just seems like such a lot for a 14 year old to have to absorb about a parent. So much vulnerability, all the stuff about eating (or lack of), VB being bullied as a child, her low self esteem. I look at my DD and DS (13 and 17) and think how worried they would be to hear all that about me and how anxious and protective it would make them feel, and in turn, how guilty I would feel. I don't think it's something that any amount of material wealth could compensate for. It would have such an impact on them, and not in a good way, I think.

I applaud VB for being so open, but part of me thinks it might have been a documentary to have done when all her kids were older...at least well out of their teens.

I also remember watching the David documentary and they were talking about how footie fans used to shout 'Posh spice takes it up the a*e' and again, all I could think of was....your kids are going to watch this. I was cringing on my sofa!!

I'm late 40s so maybe a bit old fashioned, but to me a lot about parenting is about having very filtered conversations in front of kids, even (or maybe especially) teenagers.

I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, although I probably do, lol! Just interested to hear other viewpoints, as everyone is going on about how amazing the documentary will be, but it can't be an easy watch for everyone in that family.

It just sounds like attention-seeking to me. Or perhaps desperation for news/TV coverage - or both.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 09/10/2025 09:25

Yet again the Beckhams are asking the world to gaze at their family and that simply makes me feel uncomfortable. We all know the dangers of social media and how it can invoke strong feelings in people and how it can set people up for ridicule and harsh comments. The parents have chosen that world and embrace it but the children didn’t. This is all for money and that’s just grubby. They certainly don’t need their profile raising. It’s all tawdry. I hope the coin is worth it.

PinkPanther57 · 09/10/2025 09:27

I like Victoria , she’s savvy- how much will she have been paid?

From what we can see of her, Harper seems a happy, well adjusted, child.

She isn't going to miss an opportunity to get some TV time is she? Can't believe she is still of interest but the recent Beckham thread showed she is. The football crowds still sing of her sexual appetites and fantasies after all this time

Nasty

Tontostitis · 09/10/2025 09:33

I really like her. The last Beckham documentary was amazing and I'm really looking forward to this one

I think this admission of an eating disorder is a bit ridiculous. The world has known that for years.

The daughter is dressed like a mini me. There's been a serious acceleration of her into the public eye as a young woman lately, as opposed to the child she is. The brand must need a boost.

There isn't one parent on here can deny that D&V have used those kids from day one for the brand. I find it very sad for those kids.

I am surprised V hasn’t seemingly valued the academics more. My hope would be Harper would have the university experience & go on to a regular job or career.

Lobelia123 · 09/10/2025 09:44

Wow. Im always amazed at how much vitriol and hostility these two people bring out online. Maybe they HAVE waited till they were ready to share the story. After all the kids are not primary school age - the daughter is 14 and the boys are all well on their way late teens/early 20s. Victoria beckham has always been criticised and sneered at for being stoic, not smiling enough and trying to hold up a perfect / private image of her life. Now here she is sharing some not very flattering things and she still gets it in the neck. she just cant win.

Yes because rival football fans are always factual and reliable in their statements. I’ve been a season ticket holder at Spurs and everything I’ve heard about Arsenal is sincere and trustworthy from reliable sources. 🙄🥴

She did all those things Man City away faithfuls said she did? Ok.

I would hope not and the Man City faithful aren't a trusted source. Bonnie Blue would be in awe of VB if the songs were factual

OverlyFragrant · 09/10/2025 09:58

In this day and age, her kids would have been made aware of the contents anyway, via social media, friends and external influences.
This way, she gets to shape how her daughter sees and digests the documents and will help her understanding.
I think that is preferable to hearing it all 2nd hand.

Codyrhodesisaheel · 09/10/2025 09:59

I bloody love Victoria, she's always been my favourite Spice Girl ever since I was 10.

I think she's always been given an unfair whack by the press and the public, the way she was blamed for Beckham's affair is a prime example of that. I remember when the nanny sold her story, and the Beckhams sued her for breaching the NDA and it came out in court, the nanny saying under oath that Beckham always spoke down to Victoria and made her feel useless and stupid all the time.

Is she a talented singer? No. But you know what? I've heard much worse from other professional singers. Collectively with the Spice Girls they created absolute magic, lightening in a bottle.

I really like her style and I think her clothes always look very well tailored and drape nicely on women. I always thought though that she should have perhaps been less luxury and more middle class (e.g. a Jaeger/Hobbs style brand) - I think she would have then been able to make a profit much quicker rather than high end fashion. But its rare I've seen some of her clothes and thought 'nah, thats ugly'

In the last year, I've been buying her make up and OH MY GOD it is amazing. Absolutely the best eyeliners I've ever tried. They are high end (about £35) but worth every bloody penny. I also tried some samples of her perfumes and they are the only ones I've ever tried where I put them on in the morning after a shower, and I can still smell them the next morning. They are absolutely stunning.

Mymanyellow · 09/10/2025 10:04

All of that may well be true @Codyrhodesisaheel but those children have been monetised since before they were born. Not a good look in my eyes.

HRchatter · 09/10/2025 10:04

It’s not so much Harper. She can be shielded into a degree but Harper’s friends will probably be watching it

Tbf I’m not sure the boys are all that, err, academic. Harper might be - she’s attends a private school here doesn’t she?

I can’t help myself, I know I probably shouldn’t but I really liked the last Beckham documentary even though it was obviously curated to put them in a certain light. I guess it’s a marriage of convenience at this stage, I wonder if they’ll stay together once Harper is grown up.

Strangely enough, a lot of people DO like the Beckhams.

FabulousPharmacyst · 09/10/2025 10:10

I’m finding David’s gnashers quite distracting.

Bruisername · 09/10/2025 10:14

It’s interesting because I do feel public opinion has changed and people have more sympathy for posh and less respect for becks

i do think the estrangement from Brooklyn is being stage managed to try and make it look like it isn’t their fault but I do think those kids have been subjected to life in the public eye in an unhealthy way

Yes, that’s true but it would be a hope & value of mine. NB: Gordon Ramsay children.

This is why I miss the laugh emoji!

On the subject of VB my sympathy is scant to be honest. If you play the press for column inches (which she has done for many years) then you have to expect to get burnt. Live by the sword, die by the sword and all that.

I still remember the staged photos of her & David's skiing trip right after the RL story blew up. Loads of horseplay in the snow and piggy backs whilst grinning manically and staring right at the press cameras. Considering she built an initial career on "girl power" and being strong, independent women she was happy to burn it all up in order to cling onto Brand Beckham and the revenue it generated.

I don't dispute that.

I so have a problem with celebrities who make their kids their whole image, but let's be honest, the Beckhams aren't the only ones here. In fact, it's why I had to unfollow The Rock, clearly he's incapable of spending time playing with his girls without posting it online.

But for the most part, It seems as if the Beckham kids are relatively well adjusted in that its commonly been said that they are polite, well mannered, there's never been any scandal about them (until this feud). I do think they've indulged them though in that none of the kids seem to have any career ambitions, which is very strange when you think how career driven both Posh and Becks have been.

Good grief, I’m going to guess you’re not British if you didn’t get that sarcasm.
