The Victoria Beckham documentary - is this a weird perspective of mine?

Just reading about tonight's premiere of VB's documentary and seeing the Beckhams lined up ready to watch it, and all I can think of is how awful it is for the kids (and particularly Harper) having to watch all this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't ever be vulnerable in front of our kids and I know they have to understand the real world etc etc, but it just seems like such a lot for a 14 year old to have to absorb about a parent. So much vulnerability, all the stuff about eating (or lack of), VB being bullied as a child, her low self esteem. I look at my DD and DS (13 and 17) and think how worried they would be to hear all that about me and how anxious and protective it would make them feel, and in turn, how guilty I would feel. I don't think it's something that any amount of material wealth could compensate for. It would have such an impact on them, and not in a good way, I think.

I applaud VB for being so open, but part of me thinks it might have been a documentary to have done when all her kids were older...at least well out of their teens.

I also remember watching the David documentary and they were talking about how footie fans used to shout 'Posh spice takes it up the a*e' and again, all I could think of was....your kids are going to watch this. I was cringing on my sofa!!

I'm late 40s so maybe a bit old fashioned, but to me a lot about parenting is about having very filtered conversations in front of kids, even (or maybe especially) teenagers.

I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, although I probably do, lol! Just interested to hear other viewpoints, as everyone is going on about how amazing the documentary will be, but it can't be an easy watch for everyone in that family.

Agreed. I hadn’t thought of it quite like that but you are right - generally you talk to your kids about your own experiences only when you think it is right for them/gives them some reassurance in the context of things they themselves are going through. 14 is very young.
on the other hand I guess they are not a normal family and their kids have probably had to deal with all the consequences of that anyway.

She isn't going to miss an opportunity to get some TV time is she? Can't believe she is still of interest but the recent Beckham thread showed she is. The football crowds still sing of her sexual appetites and fantasies after all this time

Handeyethingyowl · 08/10/2025 23:48

I agree. I couldn’t subject my kids to me talking about myself in such raw detail. I cringed for the kids during the last one when Beckham did not deny that he had the affair.

Football crowds still do that? How disgustingly repulsive.

I think if you know your kids are going to encounter stuff about you online or via school mates or see you on TV, then you have to find an appropriate way of talking to them about it and allowing them to ask questions.

Of course.

I wouldn’t think many would see a publicly aired documentary as falling into that category, surely? I think it would be very disingenuous to pretend a documentary was contributing to the healthy but private discussion around these issues that goes on in a family.

This isn’t unique to VB though. Lots of celebrities do the same.

peanutbuttertoasty · 09/10/2025 01:25

Why are you surprised? They are absolutely dreadful parents and have offered up their offspring as tabloid fodder since birth.

I’m not sure they still do. DB hasn’t player English football for 17 years.

I agree, I’m not fans of theirs but I have respect for VB and if she’s showing her honesty I think it might be refreshingly novel for them compared with DB.

Me and my son are season ticket holders at Old Trafford, where Beckham started his career, and it’s not something we hear from the away support so not sure where this poster is hearing this.
We don’t even sing about Beckham!

DreamTheMoors · 09/10/2025 01:48

So Victoria was bullied as a child?
How old was she?
Harper is 14.
I was bullied for a year at 14 by a group of older girls and I didn’t tell anyone.
It was torture.
I hope this helps Victoria to help Harper if she ever needs help if somebody is bullying her.
Bullies are no fun. No fun at all.

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 09/10/2025 04:32

Anyone clocked on why she may be trying to raise her profile? Perhaps coincidental it's roll on Fashion Week; London Mew York etc and she's trying to flog off her over priced knock off Couture (!), Handbags and Pret a Porter and free advertisement for make-up brand?! Plus, in-house production company i.e Becks. As for person claiming as a United Season Ticket holder she never heard that phrase - oh yes, they did - when he was still a United Player; it would hardly make sense now! Probably last time she actually sang was at a United Game - from the safety of the WAG enclosed area with hot and cold Soap Operas - programmes and actors to order, calorie free nibbles, frozen grapes, copious amounts of Vodka and Soda plus good lighting (for personal stylist deliveries-these ladies multitask) to ensure they didn't have to sully their eyes by watching the Live Game. It was "Who let the Dogs Out!" aimed at Katie Price - who was desperately trying to be a fellow WAG by any means possible. Unfortunately, the baby trap did not work with the very un-gentlemanly behaviour of Dwight Yorke.

Its a regular song on away trips. A colleague who follows Man city had a video on his phone of a recent away trip. fans sang mightily and added new verses. i never knew she did all that they were singing about.

EverybodyLTB · 09/10/2025 09:03

As if she gives a shit about those kids. She sells them to the tabloids and puts them under the exact same spotlight she says ruined her mental health and gave her an eating disorder. Puts their school uniform and route walking to school online despite having kidnap threats against them. Her and David are self serving narcissists, she’s not ‘being vulnerable’ she’s offering something exclusive to the doc so people watch it. It’ll then make her a fortune. None of this has been forced upon her!

defrazzled · 09/10/2025 09:05

Her kids are teenagers, they will have googled their parents and and seen moch worse. Growing up a celebrity child is not a normal childhood. I am sure the kids all sat and watched the doc at home with their parents before and discussed it, it was not sprung on them at the premier. I think the Rebecca Loos and other affairs DB had are far worse for the kids self esteem and mental health than mum admitting she overcame bullying and an eating disorder.

OlympicWomen · 09/10/2025 09:08

The daughter looks as if she's in her 30s, I think it's problematic that she's grown up too quickly. She's a 14 year old girl.
Beckham is a brand, they thrive in the public eye. It's certainly given them the headlines. I hope VB has had good psychiatric treatment to support her very serious problems, though.

Sagaciously · 09/10/2025 09:10

I think Victoria will do anything to stay relevant. Hence talking about an eating disorder. She knows that’ll get the tabloids interested.

I do think they’re an odd bunch. Victoria and David are starting to look somewhat weird.

padronpepper · 09/10/2025 09:11

Kids are pretty resilent nowdays.
I completely disagree with that.

emilyinrutshire · 09/10/2025 09:14

I always find VB a strange one (although I do quite like her) I think it's very clear she loves her children very much, but she has also put them on display since the day they were born, which can't be great for them and she must realise that. She talks about being bullied but the amount of online strutiny her children have been put under, purely because they're so in the public eye, is down to her and DB.

Bruisername · 09/10/2025 09:20

On the being bullied - I think it’s inevitable the kids would have comments made about their parents regardless of how much publicity the parents put them under. It doesn’t seem like the parents have really thought through how exposing the kids to the press/social media would pan out

look at Brooklyn and the online ridicule he is subjected to. Part of that was from when he was young and needed to be kept out of the public eye but was instead pushed - the photography book for example.
