A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I our country has punched above it's weight before, but at the moment and thanks to this government, we are more a sideshow than a main contender. Starmer really thought he was equal to Trump. All I keep seeing whenever these two are together is the two Davids. Guess wo's David Steel!

EasternStandard · 14/10/2025 09:24

Pearlyjam · 14/10/2025 09:05

@TheNuthatch I totally agree. I watched the who of Trump's speech and when he thanked the other leaders, none of them took this as permission to go up to the podium to speak.
The only exception was the PM if Pakistan whom Trump asked to speak, but even he hesitated coming to the podium.

Starmer on the other hand is so entitled and full of self importance, that he just walks up to the podium ready to give a speech that he probably spent hours preparing (which best pal Blair probably helped him write). You can see the anger on his face when Trump prevents his moment of glory.

Someone mentioned Trump is a narcissist. I'd say the same for Starmer too, but he's also weak, pathetic, and morally bankrupt at the same time which is very worrying. He's prepared to sell out our country for his own personal gain and I think he's a very dangerous individual.

Yes he is craven but also lacking politically so he goes for control and bullying in PMQs for example rather than leadership.

The one upside is most people are laughing too, as well as despairing, someone said focus groups just start with people laughing when his name is said, I can imagine that.

Nolletimiere · 14/10/2025 09:25

Starmer is merely accelerating the UK’s diminished role in global affairs.

For balance, Macron is doing similarly for France.

Well, god bless 'em. 'Keir Starmer is a w**ker' has a ppernetly become the latest football chant, although we won't hear it on the tellybox. A neighbour is a season ticket holder at Crystal Palace and it rings out loud and clear over Selhurst Park (other stadiums also) Gotta love the footie fans. Oh how I would love it when next time Starmer goes to his beloved Spurs this is all he hears.

Isn’t there a long running Trump thread? This is better on there.

This thread is pretty clear

Most threads sometimes go on a tangent because people raise different issues.

I said a few posts ago that Starmer can do very little in the UK. But allow me to expand...

He's inherited a country in serious financial difficulties after 14 years of austerity Tory government with the neoliberal policies to make the rich, richer and the majority, poorer. Difficulties that Brexit didn't help and are now fully impacting the British economy, leaving it dependent on the US. He has inherited a deficit approaching 100% of the GDP, and can't reduce it without extremely unpopular policies. If his government move to the left, the press will crucify him by calling him "another Jeremy Corbyn", and he can't make more liberal policies because of the reality of high debt, stagnating economy, and services at crisis point because there is no money.

The MSM is pushing their agenda for Reform because the brand Tory is not as shinny as it once was but want to get rid of Starmer to push for more neoliberal policies. Which won't work because Farage is an incompetent, hypocritical idiot without basic policy ideas except what's in it for him.

As I said, I feel sorry for Starmer.

I can see that you have an issue with what the pp wrote yesterday which is fair enough, but this thread only works if we don't knife each other when we don't like what we read. I think the pp has got the message

Calling out ageism on the thread is "knifing" each other? But this petty bullying and mocking of posters who are on the "Starmer" thread is OK with you @TheNuthatch ? I think I will leave you all to it. It is a shame as there are some informative posters on this thread with interesting view points.

I did not say that petty bullying or mocking is ok with me, nor is ageism. We're not all spring chickens on here. I would prefer this thread to remain free from bun-fights, as it ruins threads. I don't like or agree with some posts on here either! I disagree politely, or I keep scrolling.

I am pointing out to you that you have already called out the pp on her words yesterday. Your feelings have already been heard and noted. No need to keep going after that poster every time they post. Please.

Trump / the Republicans in the US will never forgive Starmer for recognising Palestine as a state.

@Alondra
I'm afraid you won't find much sympathy for Starmer on here, as many of us have been negatively impacted by his policies.
I assumed that would be obvious in my op.

When someone becomes the subject of memes like this it's usually game over. Surely, KS must be deafened by the sound of the fat lady singing?

https://thecritic.co.uk/sorry-keir-starmer-but-schools-cant-do-it-all/

Yes, exactly. Excellent article thanks @twistyizzy

Sorry, Keir Starmer, but schools can’t do it all

“Everythingism” is undermining the real value of education

[Starmer] .. is planning to pile yet more pressure and obligations on schools that are not designed to meet them.

Subsequent details following Starmer’s speech set out a new responsibility for schools “in ensuring every pupil has a clear post-16 destination”. This proposal ignores the basic reality of how post-16 pathways work. Students face a myriad of options at the end of Year 11 — progression to sixth form, FE colleges, apprenticeships — for a dizzying array of courses.

The vast majority of teachers and schools already do their upmost to support students — suggesting opportunities, supporting them with statement-writing and penning references. Yet ultimately, if a student refuses to make a serious attempt to secure a destination then a school is unable to compel them to.

This announcement is just the latest naïve move by government to place growing burdens and responsibilities on schools.

Since when there are "pro-Labour or "anti-Labour threads in Mumsnet?

I accept the criticism that some of my previous posts had raised issues outside the original OP post. But surely people make public posts and accept some of their answers are not always going to be what they want to hear?

Not a problem, though. I'm out of here.

Let me help you. This is an anti-Labour thread. If you do a quick search you will find the latest “Starmer” thread. That is pro-Labour, much as they sometimes protest they’re not.

There is a pro-Labour aswell as this anti-Labour thread as pps have pointed out. Its unfortunate that that is necessary, but we are where we are. A small group of us got fed up of being ridiculed and attacked on other threads, so we started this one.

I appreciate that you have disagreed and debated politely. That is refreshing and doesn't happen enough on MN. We need more of that.

There has to be a return to facts really, the facts are that higher paye earners have paid more tax than ever before since 2010 on - look at the IFS.

As for the idea we’ll catch people with wealth taxes, this is very unlikely to succeed, say tax
experts.

I wish we had a return to what is feasible and likely
to succeed, policy wise. Too much magical thinking in all parties.

Appenzell · 14/10/2025 10:13

Nolletimiere · 14/10/2025 06:13

I draw conclusions from what some others post about - I generally stay away from posting about subjects of which I have little or no knowledge, or I caveat it.

Others, clearly, do not - and they are simply married to a position.

I don't think you draw conclusions at all, I think you make assumptions. Incorrectly.

@Appenzell

Now then, to ascertain whether you are posting in good faith.

The title of this thread is Labour is not working.

Your comments, please.

What's this? Some sort of entrance exam? It's an open forum and people can contribute to any thread they choose. No-one needs permission.

But just to be clear, I have a divided opinion. I think some things Labour have done are good, some have been a complete disaster. I used to vote Tory but don't recognise the party today. What worries me is that I just can't see any good opposition or alternative.

Is there any truth in the rumours that Israel have ceased intelligence sharing with the UK. That's very concerning if true.

TheNuthatch · 14/10/2025 10:34

This week's YouGov polling. Very little change, despite the conferences.

Reform - 27 (-)
Labour - 20 (-)
Con - 17 (-)
LD - 16 (-1)
Gr - 13 (+1)
