Labour isn't working - Thread 12

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Hmm, yes. 3 million people signing the digital id petition could make some protests which are inconvenient for the government! I could see that the anti-immigrant protests could be two-tiered, but hadn't thought of that. I'm the one feeling manipulated now!

I really don't trust this government at all. They are slippery snakes, and even when they seem to do something reasonable, they have a hidden nefarious agenda.

How on earth did anyone ever believe that they were the 'good guys'/had good intent?!? Oh yes, because they said so, loudly and repeatedly. Never trust the slimy man who says 'trust me'.

Yes I always think serial killers would say "trust me"

I hate their education policies the most, and there’s a lot to hate across their actions - everything is from a misplaced top down we know best attitude and it’s utterly suffocating to innovation, diversity, breadth of curriculum.

i’m sure that across the board they’re trying to restrict to a core offer, so we can produce well behaved units who don’t have any non standard thoughts. It’s the opposite of what education policy ought to be about.

I don’t understand why parents keep accepting education being robbed of diversity and not properly funded so that other things can be prioritised.

didn’t Labour run on some misty eyed speech about supporting the arts and music? What happened to that? Buried in a flurry of cuts.

Didn't they also tell schools not to have excursions to the theatre and museums because those things are elitist? Or did I misremember that.

Upstartled · 07/10/2025 09:35

I definitely remember them talking about radically changing Ofsted to take the pressure off schools and reducing the number of tests that children do.

In practice, that looked like simply renaming the ofsted categories and ADDING an additional national reading test for y8 children.

Some are loyal to Labour above all else. They promised a lot of things. What happened to the growth?

I listened to Kemi this morning, I’m glad she’s the leader. People are twisted up in whatever attacks, ridiculous. She might not do it by the next GE but she’s right on a lot of stuff. We’ll probably keep careening on spending as people demand more. There’s no limit for some to say give me stuff.

I utterly despise Rachel Reeves. She was given so much life-changing opportunity - her mum's heavily subsidised Right to Buy for her childhood home, a top girls school education leading her to Oxford - and now she's deliberately snatching those same opportunities away from other children.

They all are. Starmer too.

Yes their education policies are an absolute race to the bottom.

Funding cut for IB in state schools. So only independent will offer it

https://observer.co.uk/news/national/article/labour-cuts-funding-for-state-school-ib-diplomas

Have heard nothing re the Welsh IB yet.

DancingFerret · 07/10/2025 09:59

Thank you, @TheNuthatch.

This government, if you can call it that, is determined to dumb down and suck the very life out of us.

It occurs to me that if J K Rowling hadn't already written the Harry Potter books she would have based the Dementors on KS, Reeves, and Phillipson (Lammy seems to be their fall guy and useful idiot).

If you’ve got 20mins, watch this.

Emily Maitlis interviews Miles Taylor, who worked in the Bush and first Trump administrations, in the latter as Chief of Staff of the Dept of Homeland Security. He criticised Trump in an OpEd, and warned of the dangers he brings, in a book.

In April, Trump signed a directive targeting Miles Taylor and calling him a traitor, which is punishable by death in the US. As a result, Taylor lost the company he built, his first wife, his savings etc. His family been getting death threats from MAGA people.

Terrifying for America - my reason for posting this here is obvious, I hope. Definitely have a listen to this articulate informed man.

This is likely very similar to what we’d get from Farage and co. They’re following the Trump playbook. We cannot go in their direction. Obviously Labour are horrendous. It’s critical that the Conservatives become viable.

France has taxed the growth out of its aviation industry and hobbled its tourism industry for good measure.

The instinct to tax fucking everything to save government from the political pain of reducing spending is an exercise in shooting yourself in the foot.

Good job Reeves isn't eyeing up our aviation industry to write budget increases the treasury can't yet cash - oh, of course she fucking is because she's financially incontinent.

I expect the aviation industry to be taxed more as in us paying a much higher tax for flights for reasons of climate change. Cheap flights weren't a thing back in the past. I remember a week in the Algarve early eighties. Flight £100. Accommodation £30 self catering.

It's such a soft target.

Do you have a link @Upstartled

France has just given Europe a painful lesson in economics

Upstartled · 07/10/2025 10:09

It's not a climate tax, it's a solidarity levy that has ratcheted up the cost of flying - in and out of the country.

Every post the comments are being deleted in a hurry. They must be derogatory 😁

Thinking of the marches. Protests have to be managed in a consistent manner, without taking the content into consideration. The exception is hate speech. We seem to have no problem recognising Islamaphobia, Racism, Xenophobia. Misogyny is hit and miss. Antisemitism seems to be a total blind spot.

Yes, we've allowed anti-semitism to infect the unions, our universities, politics and they seem to be the only minority group who are expected to tolerate this level of hatred with good grace.

We have a Home Secretary who laid down in front of a supermarket in protest that it sold product from Israel.

I mean 🤷🏼‍♀️

Then make them two weekends a month. Would allow the police and councils to organise rotas, security. Everyone would know well in advance available dates. Things would run more smoothly.

I don’t know any schools in state sector that offer IB. I’ve never met anyone that has one. And my kids went one to independent and one to grammar. We are in a naice part of London. A levels have got them all into good unis and jobs.

Why is it that big a deal?
