A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I don’t know any schools in state sector that offer IB. I’ve never met anyone that has one. And my kids went one to independent and one to grammar. We are in a naice part of London. A levels have got them all into good unis and jobs.

Why is it that big a deal?

Because it reduces choice. Reductive policy to limit choice.
Many state schools DO offer it, and successfully.

You can't see the issue wiry reducing choice?

upseedaisee · 07/10/2025 10:33

MantleStatue · 07/10/2025 09:32

Didn't they also tell schools not to have excursions to the theatre and museums because those things are elitist? Or did I misremember that.

There's a piece in the Times, but it's behind a paywall so not much point me posting it.

Don't the lunatics in charge of the asylum realise a school trip is often the only time some children get to go to museums and the Theatre? How can we possibly foster a love of history and the arts if they can't see it!

It's easy pickings, only 55 state schools in the UK offer this but it follows the ideology of uniformity and conformity to close it down. They'll be limbering up for the free schools and academies next.

Labour seriously said kids should learn graffiti instead 🙄 Museums are too MC!
That's why they scrapped funding for Latin programmes in state schools too.

Their ambition for stated schooled children is in the gutter.

Did you see that cheery article about money being pulled out of the share market as investors are starting to think it’s a bubble and a crash is coming.

UK investors pull record £3.6bn out of shares

It’s so bad

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/10/2025 10:49

It'a a dangerous way of thinking. People see one side of a story and choose it. There is a wilful lack of desire to see what the "other" side thinks, feels and why.

It's probably because of a desire to belong to something and a lack of insight and critical thinking.

Good/us vs bad/them. "Our" victims are worthy, "theirs" aren't.

Worrying times.

Read something interesting recently re USA education and dumbing down. Harvard are having to run remedial maths classes for students. That's the cream of American youth.

It's a shame.

IB is a very challenging programme. It encourages a broad outlook and critical interdisciplinary thinking.

But yes, let's discourage it.

I have a friend in the USA. He's a retired Professor and now work part time for the military teaching basic English and Maths. Approximately 75% of new recruits that he teaches are unable to write more than their name and 50% cannot read at all. Their maths skills are non exisitent.

Yes - let's dumb down, or even proscribe education, because without a wider world view and critical thinking skills the proles will be easier to contain and rule.

Rivalled · 07/10/2025 10:59

Yes that’s labour’s whole ethos ‘it’s only 5 percent of privileged kids’, it’s only a tiny number who
do Latin, i dare say they think IB is the preserve
of the over privileged too…

so let’s shave that tiny amount of money and reduce choice, for some nebulous idea that this is fairer, rather than simply reductionist.

I really, really don't want to believe this.

But I struggle to see why we are engineering a race to the bottom in the schools.

If the gap is smaller, ie you kill aspiration you can also say it’s ‘fairer’. It’s just lower level for everyone.

100%

And the IB lends itself to international families or those who may wish to continue further education abroad.

It’s what Labour have always done. Why? Because they think everyone should be ‘equal’. Apart from them. Of course. Some are more equal than others etc.

This just caught my eye. Not so much the headline, but that the government have changed the eligibility criteria for Covid vaccinations this year. I've not had a Covid Vaccine since the outbreak because I couldn't choose which one I had. Apparently this year you can finally pay for a Covid jab if you want one £75-£100 a pop.

Who can get COVID jab - as pharmacies turn people away over eligibility confusion

Up to half of patients who booked to get the COVID vaccine via the National Booking System (NBS) are not eligible under new tightened criteria. Here's all you need to know.

Thinking of the marches. Protests have to be managed in a consistent manner, without taking the content into consideration. The exception is hate speech. We seem to have no problem recognising Islamaphobia, Racism, Xenophobia. Misogyny is hit and miss. Antisemitism seems to be a total blind spot.

I agree with this. As a Jewish person I am intimidated by the marches and find them deeply distressing. Because whatever people say, they ARE anti-semitic and the placards and shouts cannot be ignored. I am gobsmacked that apparently it's okay to call for global intifada and the death to Jewish people with apparent immunity.

But I still believe in the fundamental democratic right to protest. So I am totally conflicted about it all.

I took my two sons to the ballet a few months ago. They grumbled their little butts off about it. But they LOVED it. My older one who has learning difficulties said afterwards 'I clapped so hard my hands hurt'.

It's triggered an interest in him in classical music (It was Romeo and Juliet) that he did not really have before.

I hate to think that many children who may not generally access such things have now had even a school trip away from them.

There's a right to protest but not to use protest as a Trojen horse for inciting violence or championing proscribed terrorist groups. I think that we already have the laws to take the hate out of these marches, they are just to cowardly not to.

I'm so sorry that this shit has just landed in your life and that you feel intimidated and abandoned by those safety nets that were meant to be in place for everyone.
