A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Great article here by Janet Daley in the Telegraph about how Badenoch's conference speech set out an alternative to the weird prevalent political thinking that "the capacity for self-improvement, economically, educationally or professionally is, by definition, a form of privilege" so any success "constitutes a form of unfairness from which you must not be allowed to profit any more than is strictly necessary" She sums up perfectly the destructive social attitude we rant about on here!

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/49c4d468440eb361

She suggests that Kemi Badenoch's conference was about an alternative view to that, and was a return to actual Conservative principles. Badenoch certainly expresses how I see the world. I almost dare have hope for the UK, if Badenoch can bring back some solid good sense!

Me either, but it looks like that's who we've got. Him and Mandelson just seem to be able to inveigle themselves into a situation for their benefit don't they.
I'm not sure who thought Blair would be a good shoo in for Gaza peace treaty when last time he was involved in the middle east he started a war!

He's been Middle East envoy since then: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-32905468?app-referrer=deep-link

I recall it being called Middle East peace envoy previously. Always found that a little ironic! 😬

Tony Blair

Tony Blair quits Middle East envoy role

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is to stand down from his role as Middle East envoy representing the US, Russia, the UN and the EU, sources confirm.

@EmeraldRoulette I totally agree with your comments about Canterbury Cathedrale. I'm horrified at what they've done - desecrating a beautiful, historic, place of worship in the name of 'art'. The Church of England is yet another instutution going down the toilet due to it's insane wokery. It just feels like we've lost our way as a society and it makes me so sad.

The graffiti isn’t painted
its stick ons. I’ve been as I’m local.

i Agree it’s controversial but the Cathedral has got scaffolding up
again and maintenance costs a fortune.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2025 19:12

Okay, I'm a bit baffled

X is also full of people saying "the graffiti is stick on".

well, obviously!

I know how an art installation works.

All the prominent people who have written articles about it understand that it is a temporary art installation.

It's the art installation we are objecting to.

And yet people are explaining to us how an art installation works.

they seem to think the word "desecration" is somehow linked with "paint". which obviously it isn't. Desecration takes many forms.

Make it make sense. Someone. Please.

I took the pps post as not appreciating it was stick ons

Tbh I’m more appalled that an Anglican church ( also near me in Canterbury just outside the walls ) will be putting the head of Catholic St Thomas More on display for people to gaup at.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2025 19:42

@DrPrunesqualer is that really an accurate description of what's happening?
or are you just being flippant? I don't like to assume tone on a written board.

Yes it is

They had a sort of consultation at the church which I filled in

They want to remove the head which was put their by his daughter, who lived up the road in Canterbury , after she had it salvaged from the spikes at the Tower of London

They want to put it on display
They’ve asked the Pope

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2025 19:54

@DrPrunesqualer thanks

there's only going to be something left of the skull I guess.

in reality, it won't be safe enough to put it up outside so they'll have to have it in a secure place.

I find it weirdly tasteless, but I don't know what would be considered normal in terms of displaying the bones of a saint.

all has certainly made me rethink my "go to church" plan! 😂

It’s currently in the family tomb with his daughter which is set in the wall

From what I can guess, reading between the lines of the consultation, it will be viewable through a glass window in the wall
Either at a new location in the church or back with his daughter

It will be to celebrate 500 years since his execution. They expect lots of Catholic pilgrims to his resting place and the house where his daughter lived which still remains nearby, They are quite brazen in saying it will bring money to the Church !!

Its horrific
I filled out the form as a Catholic and said it should be left in peace
but most people who go to the church aren’t Catholic and it seems are keen to gaup at his remains

Its utterly sick

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2025 20:22

@DrPrunesqualer I suppose the safety of it will depend what kind of glass it is

I don't want to derail this thread with religious discussion but you've made a lot of interesting points there.

Rivalled · 11/10/2025 20:34

I didn’t know about this @DrPrunesqualer how appalling.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2025 23:01

Does everyone know about Jeremy Bentham and his "remains" in the glass case at UCL?

I know that decision was made in a very different time, though. I find it bizarre.

Yes
He Aparently asked for his body to be preserved. Dressed in his clothes and on display

each to their own

IlovetoKnitandRead · 11/10/2025 23:48

I remember seeing Sir Thomas More's head in the crypt of St Dunstans Church in the 70s. I think they must have been excavating. I was only young. I have no idea what we were there for.

I hope next month’s budget backfires spectacularly - Labour are parasites.

DT.

Rachel Reeves has signalled the better off will be forced to “contribute more” as she prepares to raise taxes at the Budget.

Treasury sources have said that the Chancellor will not cut spending on public services or significantly increase borrowing, as she looks to plug a £20-30bn black hole in the public finances.

It will leave her with no option but to increase taxes substantially.
Ms Reeves will argue that growth boosting reforms, such as a further loosening of planning rules, can avoid the need for tax rises on “working families”. She will instead target those with higher incomes or more wealth, The Telegraph understands.

Sources close to the Chancellor said: “She will be fair when asking those to contribute more to rebuild our public services.”
A Treasury insider added she was prepared to take “tough decisions” because the “stability” of the public finances is at risk, but insisted there would be no “return to austerity”.

They added that the British economy was facing a “once in a generation challenge” for which there were “no quick fixes”.

strawberrybubblegum · 12/10/2025 07:28

Well yes, this Labour fiasco is indeed a "once in a generation challenge” , since I'm pretty confident they will be unelectable during my lifetime after this fiasco.

There is a quick fix option availavle to them currently though. A general election. Recognise their own inability to govern - notably their failure to bring the tiniest control on spending - and hand over, for the good of the country. But they won't do that until they've utterly destroyed the economy, and unfortunately it won't be a quick fix by then.

All of this. It has become very apparent to all but themselves that Labour are simply not up to the job. It's like putting the cleaner in in charge of the company (no disrespect meant to the cleaners here, I've had the job myself) They have precious little experience and obviously have listened diligently to the civil service who have finally got a malleable government to agree with their own mandate. I despair where it will all end.

twistyizzy · 12/10/2025 08:17

Was at a 50th bday party last night and got chatting to a vague acquaintance. She is friendly with many Labour MPs, was active her whole life in the party etc She loathes and detests what they have done. She admits they have pissed off everyone, said they are economically incompetent and she will be voting Lib Dem at GE. I asked her why they won't listen etc. Her answer "power corrupts".
Starmer et al are running an autocratic regime, they don't listen to anyone (including civil servants etc). They only listen to themselves and the inner circle.

We then went on to discuss particular MPs (She ie Oxford grad so knows a lot of them personally). The ones we hate she also doesn't like 🤣 she used the word "twat" frequently!

So basically folks, a lifelong Labour activist is agreeing with us 🤣🤣

It was lovely to be able to discuss this rationally and politely and reminded me that it's really only in the world of MN that people insult each other for having different views.

She is also privately educated but chose to leave to go to state school as she found socialism. She is vehemently opposed to education and farming tax on the basis that they are simply shit revenge policies which only serve to entrench division rather than bring people together.

I think what I'm trying to say here is that it is only the Starmer inner circle who are continuing under the delusion that they are doing well. Everyone around them can see what's happening but Starmer et al refuse to listen.

Absolutely, well said. They are the challenge. They are incompetent liars and fiscally incontinent.

And yes they should just bow out.

Rivalled · 12/10/2025 08:43

really they should be getting far more scrutiny about the fact that the tax burden is already falling more heavily on higher earners and has been for a long time - but of course we live in a fact free zone with labour….
