A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Liberal Democrat HOLD. But Reform as a new party there get nearly 30% of vote

Looks like Starmer's conference speech has helped Reform.

Yes I agree.
He hasn't held any sway for years, and is clearly completely out of touch. No idea what he thought he would achieve by sticking his oar in. He doesn't even understand where the battle lines are, let alone how to win.

It's numpties like him with stupid attitudes that lost the conservatives the last election. So many of their MP's were out of touch with what's going on in the country. Someone said yesterday, there were/are far too many yellow conservatives and they weren't wrong. We need steering back to centre right.

Starmer has spewed some twaddle, sharing a stage with Putin's mate - Modi. He took no questions from the press. None. Zero.

He has been praising the merits of digital ID, even though he has no legitimate mandate to introduce them in the UK.

He wants to help pubs by allowing them to open longer hours and praised their importance to communities.
'Pubs and bars are the beating heart of our communities. Under our plan for change, we're backing them to thrive'.

Has no-one explained to him the impact of putting up NI and minimum wage on the hospitality sector, who were already struggling with business rates and rising energy costs?

Modi is a duplicitous serpent - if things turn hot, you can bet he will not prove a friend to the West.

Once again, Starmer is the useful idiot - pandering to the Indian vote at home and a one-sided trade deal, over the wider geopolitical considerations.

Yeah you're spot on.
Kemi has said that any MPs who don't back her plans to leave the ECHR will not be allowed to stand as tories at the next election. Fit in, or fuck off basically. Risky, but necessary.

It's interesting - and what she needs to do. It might not leave them short of candidates, but new names might be a bigger benefit than the stale old.

She couldn't ever fight fair

Since when has Starmer been a friend to hospitality? I’m amazed at the tripe they come
out with - the brass neck of it!

Coming as millions struggle as a result of Labour's fiscal (and possibly, weaponised) incompetence, this is just one more thing to add to the misery - because I don't believe for one minute the new increase will amount to "£1 per household, per month".

Another hopeless line rendered a lie ‘more money in your pocket’ or some Labour sodding soundbite. Clowns.

An awful lot of new housing in the Hart area. Libdems getting younger people’s votes

In the Kent area many of the new housing developments and proposed ones are near and in traditional Conservatives areas .
Interesting ploy that !

We can’t have a meter as SE water say they can’t put one in. We’re currently paying £85 a month. This increase will mean it will be about £88.40 that’s £1060 a year!

and we constantly have no water due to repairs and leaks !

I am so fed up with all these huge bills

Yes 100%. Unions are out for the unions, not teachers or pupils.

They have been for decades

What I love about Labours new housing promise of 300k homes per year during parliament, is, not only will they miss it by at least 50%, but, if my area in Surrey is anything to go by, the houses are barely fit for habitation - houses shoehorned on to tiny plots with neighbours on top of each other.

Utterly dreadful.

We had a letter from our MP yesterday asking for our thoughts on proposed planning permission for flats to be built on land behind us. It's a big no!It's totally unsuitable. Just another reason for son to sell up and move abroad. BTW he's home at the weekend after his travels.
We are the laughing stock of europe. I won't say what the country is known by, because it's pretty awful, but it's universal, through the 8 countries he's stopped in.

In terms of protecting land for cultivation, woodland and wildlife Im in favour of smaller plots with terraces and flats.
They are also more affordable
I agree however there needs to be more stringent controls on materials etc. Many are designed to a poor standard

Same for us in Hampshire. There's a huge development about three miles from me built on what used to be open space and farmland - all squeezed in virtually on top of one another. What puzzles me is all the houses seem to have new and expensive vehicles parked outside.

Re Starmer/Modi, Modi’s a Hindu nationalist. In Euro terms an ethno-nationalist like the far right parties in continental Europe. But not a peep from the MN left collective about Starmer getting into bed with him. Including about Modi’s closeness to Putin.

I remember vicious attacks on Sunak for meeting Meloni. “Fascist!” etc etc. (The fact Starmer met Meloni soon after the election was conveniently overlooked.)

The left really are such hypocrites and liars.

I also see increasing amounts of know-it-all-ism on MN from the Starmer fans. I put it down to panic and fear for their ‘wonderful’ party. There’s one MN Labourite who must qualify as the most self-important and puffed-up poster on the whole site. No names.

I’m amazed you’ve managed to whittle it down to one. They all fit the general description. Laughable really, if they weren’t so grubby.

I agree with you but many of these houses, whilst marketed as family homes, are anything but. I get the impression they are built in haste without any real thought, and will simply create more neighbour threads on MN….

They are years in the making and have to abide by certain criteria based on area
% of 2,3 and 4 bed etc and % of social housing required. Then number of parking spaces, area requirement for open spaces. Once you’ve got through all the requirements and provided according to S106 there’s not a lot of wiggle room

That said there aren’t a lot of these developements that I like. There’s been some good ones with lots of flats near town centres I know of. They aren’t blighted by masses of cars as they are near shops and public transport though

CaveMum · 09/10/2025 15:10

The standard of modern homes, built by the big building firms not small scale developments, is shocking. There is a development near us that featured on the national news last year due to the state of the homes - gardens flooding, in one case a staircase collapsed, just horrendous.

I was chatting with a local plumber not long ago. He said he had been asked to quote for doing the work on a development of 15 or so houses and gave what he thought was a very reasonable quote for his time and using good quality parts. He was told his quote was more than double what they were prepared to pay so they went with another plumber. He said he ended up back at the same development about 6 months after it was finished being asked to fix all the problems left by the guy who had done it on the cheap.

"Scarred Britons are too afraid to spend."

Hardly surprising when you consider Reeves is yet again poised to put her grubby sticky paws into our collective purses in the very near future.

Curiously, in the marketing blurb for the ones near us, whilst they provide a floor plan, they leave out the measurements and square footage…

Over 1000 migrants arrived here by boat yesterday. Meanwhile the number returned so far under Starmer’s 1 one out scheme is 7.
