A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I stick with political - as in Labour exercised their power to amend fiscal policy and I responded with my power to reduce my tax liability.

Absolutely.

You don't have to explain, you are not elected and your decisions are your own.

Agree. Labour are blind to the impact of their policies, it’s on them.

Moving on....

Just listened to Mel Stride. He has pledged an NI rebate scheme to help young people towards a deposit on their first home, reducing welfare spending, and a reduction in foreign aid. He said this will create more headroom (over £40bn) with a view to paying down debt and reducing corporate taxes.

Well that sounds a bit more sensible, however as always, it depends if it can be got past the civil service.

I heard the fiscal responsibility line I agree with him on that, and these sound good.

Can they sell in sensible? Maybe in a few years the electorate won’t be so angry at them, idk though, it’s a pity as we just have mad policies otherwise.

I'm having a break from news today, I can't face it. So I'm relying on this thread to keep updated.

Absentosaur · 06/10/2025 09:35

Beautiful day today, down here on the south coast ☀️. Only blighted when I scan the news. Love this thread though, cheers up my day, thank you all. ❤️❤️ Even the ones such as the lovely goady (bored?) type who popped in to see us, always a pleasure never a chore. Maybe ;)

I suppose with the imminent collapse of Labour after the next GE, it's a contest between the Greens and Your party to become the new party of the Left.

Dangerous times.

They are very close in ideology, if they don’t stick to personal dislike they could easily be the same party.

It will take votes from Labour so that’s one benefit, although they are mad policies so it’s a bit concerning too.

Rivalled · 06/10/2025 09:55

And again, we could nudge people into making greener choices through tax incentives- but these parties never get beyond punishment and evangelising mentalities.

DancingFerret · 06/10/2025 10:13

It's sunny days like this with clear blue skies (I'm so far south I can see the Isle of Wight from my bedroom window) that I allow myself to forget the absolute maelstrom going on in the world right now - and then I switch on the radio or go online. 😕

Back in the real world and on the subject of ID cards: One of our friends has stated hell will freeze over before he complies with this latest attack on our personal freedom; assuming millions of people are of the same view, how will they enforce it?

Oh don't get me started on greener choices! My degree is Environmental leaning and I worked in the industry. The technology that has fallen by the wayside beacuse it didn't fit the narrative or didn't have the right backing or had the right backing but was buried boils my blood. The whole industry is rotten to the core and I couldn't get out fast enough.

Rivalled · 06/10/2025 10:22

I’m not surprised - we want to avoid zealotry and get back to proper analysis in all of these areas, fed up with politicians rushing fast in half cooked directions.

Someone posted the requirements of the new housing stuff on the petition thread, it already has digital ID written in as necessary. I can see Labour doing this to a lot of things.

Makes me feel ill. The only thing that can be done is voting them out at the next GE.

It is a beautiful day. Far nicer than the reality of Labour.

Absentosaur · 06/10/2025 10:38

? what do you mean @EasternStandard

EasternStandard · 06/10/2025 10:54

Starmer wants to change the system for buying and selling houses. It will require digital ID.

Deploying the use of digital tools – including digital property logbooks, digital ID verification, and standardised data sharing – enhancing transparency and security for buyers and sellers.
From Gov.uk

I don’t think there’s much to stop Labour writing this condition wherever they want. It’s the new ‘bedrock of the state’ after all.

What can be done? People are happy to let Starmer do whatever. I can only hope they get utterly trounced at next GE.

I've just listened to Claire Courtiho's speech at the conference. It was impressive, worth a listen if you can find it on YouTube or similar. She speaks my language on energy etc.

Labour want to lose the next election don't they? Its the only explanation for their batshittery. I've never hated a government like this one.

Agreed

IlovetoKnitandRead · 06/10/2025 11:11

I remember the beginnings of the environmental movement of the 80s. Forty years on and we still make loo paper from virgin wood pulp and single use plastic is an horrendous problem. Government's are only interested in what lines their pockets. Labour are worse than useless.
Litter, overgrown verges, obscured road signs, I could go on. Our council is just about to go bankrupt. Grants for charities are being cut. I know it is not all Labour's fault but I wish we had a government that actually cared. I wish we had a government that valued hard work and savings and supported those who fall on hard times. I wish we had hope for our young people and an NHS to look after those who need it. Instead we have a crap NHS, failing schools and private schools having to close.
My DH always says it is like taking out a loan you can't afford to lend money to someone you don't like. That is what Labour are doing.

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 06/10/2025 11:11

I’m working on the idea that Labour are playing the long game. This is their chance to fundamentally change our society. They know this will mean they will be thrown out at the next election, but they have tilted the playing field in their direction and their pay off will come later in a glorious utopia

Increasingly, I think the squeezed middle need
to demonstrate en masse - seemingly everyone else is.

’No more taxes’.

So tax management as far as is legal, and no selling or buying houses (to avoid enforced digital ID). Brilliant.
