Labour isn't working - Thread 11

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's about bloody time. Shabana Mahmood has given extra powers to Police, it's was on GB news, but this is the only link I can find. They were saying, really it's more a reminder to the Police to use powers they already had.

Police are to be given greater powers to restrict protests by allowing them to consider the “cumulative impact” of repeated demonstrations.
The measures follow frequent pro-Palestinian demonstrations including an event in London on Saturday which saw almost 500 arrests.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said repeated large-scale protests had caused “considerable fear” for the Jewish community.

Apologies if I've already posted this but these numbers are crazy

Harrietsham Lenham & North Downs (Maidstone) Council By-Election Result:

➡️ RFM: 50.4% (+38.8)
🌍 GRN: 18.8% (New)
🌳 CON: 14.0% (-2.6)
🔶 LDM: 9.7% (New)
🏰 HER: 4.0% (New)
🙋 Ind: 3.0% (New)

No Ind (-57.8) or LAB (-13.9) as previous.

Reform GAIN x3 from Independent.

Wow that is high.

Listening to Times Radio on the China thing, someone speaking very well on the failure of Labour on this. I’m not quite following it but it looks like it’ll come back up as questions in HoC

‘No. 10 is a threat to national security’ was his quote, it was Ian Duncan Smith

TwistyTurnip · 05/10/2025 08:21

Well to me, these poll results show that a lot of people feel their concerns about out of control immigration to the UK are not being addressed by the government. Labour have a choice - they can be bold and take steps to control the borders and deport illegal migrants. Or they can pretend it’s not an issue and by doing so will be handing the next election win to Reform on a silver platter.

I found out an interseting piece of info the other day. I was speaking to a newly elected reform councillor who won a by election recently and I asked the question about Reform's lack of experience in government. He said the reason so many Reform representatives are being put forward is to prepare someone from the council cohort to become reform candidates in future general elections. Not only will the candidate have a modicom of an idea of how politics works, but also, they will be local representatives. So often, people are parachuted into constituencies and you have no clue who they are.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 05/10/2025 08:29

So that sounds like Reform actually have a long game plan. I’m not a fan of Reform but they sound like they are expecting to be real contenders for the next GE and putting the groundwork in now.

They need to. They're pretty green. Which is also labours issue. So many new MPs with little experience or specialist knowledge. I'm sure the civil servants run rings round most of them.

EasternStandard · 05/10/2025 08:39

Good response from Calum Steele former police head on the protest change. He thinks it’s knee jerk and problematic, likely to get legal challenge. I have mixed feelings on the actual protests but I fear Labour’s authoritarianism so that too.

@whatwhatwhatisgoingon the ID card thing isn't a surprise to me

What is a surprise to me is the cack handed way of trying to introduce it

Also, I know the Conservatives carry a lot of blame in terms of problems with people trying to get into the country, but I feel as if Labour actually want it to continue.

Whereas Priti Patel and Suella Braverman genuinely tried to do something about it - my understanding is that lawyers advised them that their ideas would not work. (And Rishi Sunak had ideas for dealing with it but got shouted down).

I think I asked on MN before if that was lawyers engaged by the government effectively telling them not to do it. That links into my concerns about the judiciary.

Also, I feel as if I don't know what Labour are actually aiming for with the economy. I appreciate it may well be the opposite of what many of us want, but I feel as if they have no plan at all.

another moment of posting something risky here - many people thought that Labour were more likely to push ahead with a WEF linked plan to have managed decline, which would make us a more likely candidate for some kind of globoslop approach. I appreciate many posters will think I'm in conspiracy theory territory with that one.

I wonder if Kier Starmer was one of the lawyers who advised Priti Patel and Suella Braverman their ideas wouldn't work? It wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Starmer was already an MP by then, however, Hermer was kicking about and we all know the Fabian society is packed with judges and lawyers, so maybe not Starmer directly, but Labour influenced advice is highly likely!

The more I hear about what we could do re immigration and the bar for claiming asslyum the more incredulous I feel .

I would much rather really focus the need as kemi said to save people who have been directly threatened by a government.
And to chose who we take .
I d much rather offer real promising change and safety to women and children from certain areas rather than having it foisted on us. And say anyone who arrives illegally don't get in

However I'd also like to make sure any new arrivals get educated on our laws ,our freedoms and our protections and that trumps everything including culture and religion.

This is close to how I feel on this. I’d like to choose to take a mother and daughters from Sudan for example, or just choose. Ik it interrupts an established system but I don’t think it’s the best system anymore.

LieborCookin · 05/10/2025 09:59

@EasternStandard indeed and taking smaller numbers and one day....having more money means it could be a far higher provision we offer, better quality

Of course better provision for our own in need as well.

I have been reading this thread for a few days and thought I would drop in.
I woke up this morning and my first thought was 'what a mess our country is in.' I have never known such division. Never in my post menopausal years have I been so embarrassed by our country. This last year with Labour has made the country so unstable in my opinion. I am actually fearful for the future.

Welcome.

You're not alone in feeling fearful. The problem most of us here have is that we are helpless - watching the country being transformed into a land we no longer recognise. The zealots in charge are determined to see out their term of office until 2029, and there exists no legal means to eject them. My concern is there will be blood on the walls by the time they're gone.

twistyizzy · 05/10/2025 10:58

Early data from ISC looks to show 81 schools closed since VAT was brought in. That's double the yearly "average".

MantleStatue · 05/10/2025 11:14

The Labour party's stated aim for VAT was to redirect money (from parents who were already saving the state) to the state system.

We all know it was to destroy private schooling. And to reignite class warfare.

They have done the latter very very successfully. Shame on them. Shame. And shame on all those who crowed about it with such spite.

I'll never forget this. Never. And neither will my children. As said on the thread before. (i think by you @twistyizzy .. our Government knowingly, wilfully and gleefully commenced hostilities against an entire segment of the population- who arguably are the ones who keep this country fucking afloat with our taxes and our contributions.

CruCru · 05/10/2025 11:17

There’s a thing in the Times today - girls’ schools are losing pupils faster than boys’ schools (because they are newer and don’t have historic benefactors and lots of alumni).

The north east has seen the greatest fall in pupil numbers (5.9%) while London has seen a 3% fall.

Rivalled · 05/10/2025 11:23

It’s too much to expect any more of regret or understanding from labour for the education they’ve disrupted and the schools they’ve driven under…

upseedaisee · 05/10/2025 11:29

This week's conservative party email is worth sharing. Kemi explains the ECHR report. I'm looking forward to reading it when it's published.

"Our ECHR report is the most serious, detailed piece of work any political party has produced.

Because we know getting it right matters.

For years, politicians have promised to take back control. But time and again, when we tried to act in Britain’s interests, we were blocked. Not by voters, but by judges in Strasbourg.

The European Convention on Human Rights was never meant to overrule our democracy. Yet today, it is holding Britain back.

  • It has stopped us from deporting foreign criminals.
  • It has tied our hands on border security.
  • It has been used to launch legal attacks on our veterans, and it’s made it harder to put British families first for housing and services.

Enough is enough.

That’s why I asked Lord Wolfson KC to carry out the most serious review ever undertaken of Britain’s ECHR membership.

The conclusion is clear: if we want to protect our borders, our veterans, and our democracy then….
Britain must leave the ECHR.
Leaving the ECHR isn’t easy, but it can be done and only the Conservatives are strong and capable enough to do it properly.

No other party has done the homework. No other party has the depth of talent to match what we have produced.

Unlike other parties who treat leaving like it’s a slogan or a silver bullet, we recognise the complexity.

That’s why we have a plan built on months of hard work and detailed legal preparation.

Leaving the ECHR won’t be simple. It will take courage, competence and careful reform. It will mean rewriting laws, reconfiguring international arrangements, and restoring the principle that British laws are made by the British Parliament.

Other parties will talk. They’ll posture. They’ll pretend this is easy, or that it doesn’t matter.

But they won‘t do the real hard work required.* *The public needs more than this and wants better than this.

This is about more than leaving a treaty. It’s about restoring trust in our democracy and giving power back to the people you elect.

That’s why I wanted to make sure our ECHR report was a serious piece of legal work. People have been let down many times before. I know that now, more than ever, getting it right matters.

I've never understood why there isn't a list of countries from whom you could legitimately be escaping and need asylum

Claiming to seek asylum from places where we could all go on holiday doesn't sit right with me

Do the Conservatives ever do broadcasts on X? I think they have got time to put themselves back together, but if they're not doing the PR then it won't work.

That said, they do seem to be responsible for the asylum issue so maybe it's hopeless. I was kind of hoping Reform and Conservatives would form a coalition. I don't fancy having a bunch of people in with zero experience.

Absentosaur · 05/10/2025 12:14

A comment on this made me laugh. Along the lines of .. Starmer is such a wet wipe. Although he’s a dried out wet wipe. Utterly useless. 😂😂

Yeah the actress thing. 🤷‍♀️

Indeed. And a place that’s so dangerous so uninhabitable, that they often go back to on holiday, with our tax payers cash.
