A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's hardly a surprise to anyone that this has happened an I applaud those British schools moving overseas, it seems like a logical operation to me.
Ifeel dreafully sorry for those of you having to pay this education tax, because really that's what this is.
What really annoyed me about this VAT on education was that a number of private schools, Eton and Chelmsford ladies being just a couple have now closed their satellite outreach classes for the bright children in poorer areas. So ir's a triple whammy, the children of middle earners suffer as do a number of SEN children and also less well off children who will now probably not get the education to get into a decent uni. It must be a lovely view up from their Ivory Towers.🤬

Edited

Have I got this right? British private schools are moving lock stock and barrel overseas?

No but the big names are opening branches up abroad. I can foresee a time when they move their whole focus abroad where governments are more welcoming. Labour have created an incredibly hostile environment for UK independent schools

upseedaisee · 04/10/2025 14:01

@TheNuthatch posted a link further up the thread about British students moving to overseas schools, so seeing an opportunity, some British schools are also opening branches overseas.

Yes I’d never have entertained leaving EHCR a few years back but it seems impossible to deport anyone and that just can’t carry on. Case after case tied up in costly legal battles and going nowhere.

That's really interesting because if you live in the south east, South West boarders could be closer than if they went to schools up north being a ferry, flight away. An exeat in France sounds good.

I've no skin in the game being ancient, but if I were younger with kids and had the money I'd be tempted

EmeraldRoulette · 04/10/2025 15:40

Re the EHRC, I was also wondering about our issues with the judiciary

I don't know that other countries are refusing deportations because of issues with chicken nuggets. Or are they doing it too?

In terms of the class stuff, I don't know how it started but there is
an overwhelming rhetoric against success as well as against privilege. I realise the privilege thing is complicated. But being anti-success seems a really weird thing.

I remember going to a book launch about seven or eight years ago, I think. And a leading publisher there said to me that she feels like she has to apologise for being middle class. Actually, I suppose in terms of how society has gone, seven or eight years is a really long time ago.

We were joking about it, and I was saying I don't know what class I am, but I'm not apologising for anything... but I probably get a free pass because of not being white. We laughed at the time, but now that seems a lot less funny.

The oppression Olympics in full effect.

and some people will say it's all just the swing of the pendulum.

There’s a thing in the Times that says that 175 people were arrested at the pro Palestine march today. The Met have said “The arrest phase takes time. Many of those arrested won’t walk out of the square and need to be carried, something that requires a minimum of five officers to do safely”.

Surely it's time for the marches to be refused permission.

That was the Palestine Action demonstration. They sat down holding placards and were arrested.

That would be anti democratic although it wouldn’t surprise me if Labour did it

Joining to say, I actually feel a bit…..speechless? What ON EARTH is going on?
ID cards, entirely uncosted “initiatives”, such overt massive aggression and polices and rhetoric to create division?
I have no idea what is going on, but none of it makes any sense to me?

Over 400 have now arrested and most needed to be carried. I just wonder where they're being taken to be processed, given the number.

Welcome.

None of it makes sense to right-minded people; the current government is more akin to a dictatorship. It all feels sinister to me.

Parsley4321 · 04/10/2025 19:51

It does feel sinister like where is it going to end up ? Everyone I speak to is incredulous at this shit show I always felt quite relaxed about the government and that they had our best interests at heart not any more

It does feel sinister as Dancing said. If you can't lead, control.

There is definitely an overwhelming rhetoric against success. Some people obviously can't stand others being better/brighter/more successful than they are. I find that weird. They also don't seem to grasp where the money to pay for public services actually comes from.

Well that's worrying. They've got that trotskyite new leader, if he got anywhere near the seats of power we'd all be in hair shirts and living off mung beans.

What's frightening, because I'm not sure if they're up to the job, is Reform is rapidly shaping up to be the next government. That said, the next GE is over three years away and what happens then is anyone's guess right now.

The Greens are off their rockers.
It will split the left vote though, and add more pressure to Starmer.

I'm hoping (well, kind of, but also not) that they'll fuck so many councils up that nobody will want to trust them with the country by the time the next GE comes around.

I'm definitely hoping that the Tories get their shit together in the next few years. Ultimately, there's no point them peaking now. But they do need to start making progress.

Sinister is exactly the right word. I cannot see how any of what is happening or being proposed works for, literally, anyone?
Business is in uproar, the budget is terminally delayed, the markets are in revolt. Zero growth, Inflation is rising, as in unemployment.
Yet, you can pick any one of a number of threads on here and people are saying, with massive confidence, things that just are not true?
As a country, we are about as attractive a borrower as an alcoholic unicorn. I’m admittedly no spring chicken but I’ve never seen anything like this?
