A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Overall, what I object to is the sneering as they raised taxes, all of the raises, blind to the impacts annd the fact that since 2010, taxes and costs have gone up and up and wages haven’t kept pace. And we’re in for more of the same. Yes taxing education should never have happened but also, the mood music around all of these changes was horrible.

the tories didn’t fight the case for tax payers well either because they were the ones that had to raise taxes due to Covid etc. but we need a more honest debate and they need to be able to talk so it their tax raising record to acknowledge it and have a plan.

Although in reality it’s not only Starmer being shagged by his policies…

upseedaisee · 04/10/2025 09:27

It's hardly a surprise to anyone that this has happened an I applaud those British schools moving overseas, it seems like a logical operation to me.
Ifeel dreafully sorry for those of you having to pay this education tax, because really that's what this is.
What really annoyed me about this VAT on education was that a number of private schools, Eton and Chelmsford ladies being just a couple have now closed their satellite outreach classes for the bright children in poorer areas. So ir's a triple whammy, the children of middle earners suffer as do a number of SEN children and also less well off children who will now probably not get the education to get into a decent uni. It must be a lovely view up from their Ivory Towers.🤬

Money, jobs, soft influence leaving the UK.

Yep. So bad.

Ideologically killing an area where we were world beating.,,

upseedaisee · 04/10/2025 09:45

Son's whistlestop tour of Eastern Europe continues, he's fallen in love with Poland, Hungary still has a whiff of the old communist state about it(his words). He thinks he's come up with some possibilities. The company he works for has sites throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the USA, so he's going to speak to HR about a secondment. His training credentials are accepted overseas so he just needs to persuade them he's worth betting on.

Yes and also making independent schools MORE elitist.

Rivalled · 04/10/2025 09:48

Which is of course what Labour wants as then they’ll just use that as yet another attack.

EasternStandard · 04/10/2025 09:48

Thankfully it’s one policy the next gov can change easily and people will return over time. But they are idiots to do it still.

Rivalled · 04/10/2025 09:50

I do worry we’re looking at a lab snp lib coalition - we know the liberals won’t have the leverage to overturn vat on education….

The thing is the Labour gvt will be long gone, that those kids still at ps then uni, may grow up to be in positions of huge influence. As may the kids whose education has been negatively affected. And they won’t hold back, BP will look like an amateur. All Labour and their supporters have done for their short term gain, is give themselves a world of pain in future.

DancingFerret · 04/10/2025 10:01

Andrew Neil's overview of the current dire economic climate and why it could spell the end of KS and Reeves. It can't come soon enough, but whenever they go they'll leave behind a trail of financial and social destruction from which it'll take years to recover, if ever.

Yes you're spot on. Plus many alumni groups are really working on ringfencing internships etc now to counteract the "no PS kids" policies

True. Although whoever replaces them might do similar. Labour will struggle to rein in spending.

I don't really have a strong opinion either way on leaving the ECHR. If it is deemed to be necessary, I'm fine with that. I think Kemi might attract some negativity with this announcement as its taken her a year to get there.
Agree on the tories need to focus on the economy.

I think it'll actually go down better now than it would've done a year ago. There have been some high profile judicial decisions recently which have shown how the ECHR hampers removal of failed asylum seekers. People, I think, are more receptive now.

Agreed. Also the ‘Labour grandees’ who’ve been outspoken about its’ issues.

Pearlyjam · 04/10/2025 12:27

For the first time in my life I've started to think about emigrating. I was born and bred here and love the UK but I hate what it's becoming thanks to our dire, incompetent and corrupt Politicans. Where I'd emigrate to i don't know and I probably couldn't anyway I'm not highly skilled, but I just feel that this country is getting worse each day and the government just seems intent on destroying it.

Agreed - I think people are far more receptive to it now than a year ago.

I also find it strange of Labour to criticise Badenoch for taking the time to investigate pros/cons and consequences properly. That's exactly what I want a government to do! I wish Labour did more thinking through of consequences instead of just inventing whatever nonsense policies have popped into their heads and resonate with the party faithful.

Even the BBC say that the 200 page report details why key government aims can't be achieved within ECHR and that leaving it doesn't break the Good Friday agreement. I think a delay to get expert analysis clarifying those questions was well worth the wait.

I heard more anti-private-school snarkiness in the wild today. I completely blame Labour's rhetoric and class war for this breakdown in community cohesion.

I likewise love the UK, but find myself wondering whether my family has a future here. (I'm a dual national: one British parent and one from an EU country)
