Parliamentarians don't apply the law. And it's fairly fundamental to our separation of powers that you don't get a say in that.
Your responsibility as legislature is to make the laws.
A previous legislature passed the Equality Act. And you still need to abide by those previously made laws, even though you're now the government.
Sure, you can try to bring in other laws to supercede the existing ones. But you don't get to just disregard them in a tantrum, just because you're 'in power'. It's not that kind of power.
Does this same lack of understanding pervade Labour? Does this explain other 'flexible' interpretations of e.g. tax laws about stamp duty?
