A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

We've both done a shift 😂.
There are none so blind etc.

Well done just been reading that 👏

I agree. Goodness knows I’m not a fan but buying her council house for whatever the price was and selling it years later is not all that surprising. Plus, are we really going to judge people on the actions of their parents?

I don't think anyone is judging her on the actions of her parents.

It's just when someone goes on and on and on about their upbringing then chances are someone else is going to look into it, that's all.

Gov.uk website on
Digital IDs

Anyone find this as patronising as I do

Apparently only the old or IT illiterate will be the ones struggling to use a digital ID
Nothing about those of us who refuse to have one so by default labelling us old or IT illiterate. 😳

What a f…… nasty document

The attached notes our rights not outlined on the Gov website

@CruCru
private school kids are judged on the actions and decisions of their parents.

When that all stops I might change my mind
meanwhile if you’re using your upbringing to get ahead, as she does, you are open to scrutiny

I think the plan is to chat about it a bit in Parliament but there’s no public consultation or vote

Its already on the Gov website

Fuck sake. This is as bad as I thought it would be but feels even worse now it’s reality.

That blurb is so arrogant and controllingly Labour / Starmer. The only thing giving me hope is how hated he is and they are.

Agree

What ever happened to democracy

First they make it a policy to ignore local planning authorities and public opinion on new developments by overriding them

Now this
Although just now the bbc news reported the petition against digital ID is the third highest signed petition ever

So
More demonstrations me thinks

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 27/09/2025 21:53

I’m opposed to ID and I’ve signed the petition.

But we live in a parliamentary democracy. Petitions do not make or amend or stop laws by themselves. They draw attention to the strength of feeling on an issue. That’s all.

I’m not sure that’s what is being said. There was no manifesto pledge on a digital ID scheme, especially not one that is described as in that tweet below.

Petitions and strength of feeling do impact governments and if they get it really wrong then it’s not without consequence.

I may have misunderstood the previous posts.

I was commenting on the government doing nothing about the petition, other than making time to talk about it.

Perhaps the point being made was that enabling legislation would just be waved through. If so, sorry for my confusion.

Re the mail article I found it uncomfortable reading. I had no sympathy with the cold ,my house was cold ,we had single glazed metal framed windows ,I also went to bed with my mum providing me with hot water bottles hats and so on.
Having frost on the inside of your windows in the 80s wasnt unusual.
My mum was a war baby from one of the poorest areas of the UK she had many siblings at one point four girls in one double bed.
Outside loo.

The story says a neighbour put money through the door for a coat but then says she had music lessons .
I don't believe in those days we had the access to cheaper nice clothes we do now from the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's for children etc so maybe buying a coat was expensive
Then we get into strange conflicting detail about her not being able to get a job?
The mum because of childcare and yet back then there were jobs around children like school dinner lady's etc

Obviously she's done well for herself and it sounds like her grandpa really opened up the world for her with his culture and love of books etc and her grandma and mum.

I do find it jarring though I feel uncomfortable with the level of scrutiny but at the same time she used it for political gain

Leaving aside the facts of Phillipson’s upbringing, such as they can be proved, I agree that a personal appeal on the basis of shortage, or riches, or special circumstance is off-putting.

I don’t think the worse of Starmer or Davey for being obviously middle-class, or think more highly of Badenoch for being a black woman. Although, to be frank, she has much the best claim of any of the leaders to having overcome social barriers.

Starmer is probably the worst Walter Mitty for being so coy about the truth of his company-owning dad’s background, his schooling, his flute lessons at the Guildhall and all the rest of it.

Parsley4321 · 27/09/2025 23:13

Can the digital id be waved through does it have to go to a vote in Parliament or the lords ?

strawberrybubblegum · 27/09/2025 23:15

I find it quite jarring too. A single mum (father not on birth certificate, and not contributing) who didn't work until BP was at school despite supportive grandparents around... yet despite that BP grew up in an owner occupied home (bought by her Mum at a massive taxpayer-funded discount), she had violin and drama lessons, she went to a high performing girls school and then Oxford, and she's now in the government front bench.

I mean, that's pretty impressive state-supported opportunity and social mobility!!

And yet she has a chip on her shoulder and says it isn't enough?!?

I think so. I read that there's a 3 month consultation (not sure who they plan to consult with - it's unlikely to be anyone who might have a different opinion, given their authoritarian tendencies) and introduced to Parliament early next year.

The good thing about it not being in their manifesto is that the Lords are free to disagree.

StatuteofLiberty · 27/09/2025 23:25

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame company owing dad ? I thought he was a tool maker

Parsley4321 · 27/09/2025 23:41

@strawberrybubblegum surely that’s insane I predict massive unrest would the lords disagree

DancingFerret · 27/09/2025 23:55

Peter Hitchens on the subject of ID cards. I used to think his views were verging on the extreme - including when, prior to the 2024 GE, he urged people not to vote for Labour because they really had no idea of the havoc and pain KS and his gang would cause, and was proved correct in very short order.

These days I take Hitchens more seriously.

Have just been sent a message from a friend that the Sunday Times is breaking a story tomorrow about SKS helping his parents dodge inheritance tax? (Just arrived back in UK after a week away not following the news so not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere)
